“A mixed bag”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2012

Let's start with the pros: the location in a nice neighborhood not far from the train station was ideal. The breakfast was indeed simple but the coffee was outstanding. The wifi was adequate. The complimentary drinking water cooler was very much appreciated. The cons: To reach our small and stuffy room was a very tedious climb up to the third floor. What was most disconcerting was the shower and toilet in the same area with no barrier or door separating the two. The smell emanating from the drain was so disgusting. We had to tell the front desk staff twice about the odor and finally the engineer put something down the drain to contain the odor. Save your Euros, Amsterdam is costly.

I loved this little boutique hotel in downtown Amsterdam. Beautiful view of one of my favourite streets in Amsterdam - walking distance to Amsterdam Centraal, Red Light Dist, and a short bike ride to all the other attractions.

The rooms were super clean, funky, and very individual. The bathroom was downstairs (steep stair case) with no real door but it gave the room character.

The only down side was the room got a bit stuffy.

Lovely staff at the hotel, even when you come home at 6am they are more than happy to assist. The breakfast was basic, but hey it was offered and an automatic coffee machine was a nice touch. Free wifi was not really accessible in the room - but good in big lounge area in hotel lobby.

Room Tip: Definitely book a larger room if you are travelling with a partner or friend - i can imagine the sma...

Don't bother. The room was dark and dingy, lamp fittings were falling apart the 'breakfast' was atrocious. You can get better elsewhere.

What a disappointment after reading the reviews here... Our room was simply awful and breakfast consisted of only bread with the option 3 jams... booking should have said "breadfast included", WIFI was extremely poor quality!

I've just come off 6 weeks in Europe (Paris, London, Barcelona, Prague, Istanbul, Venice, etc) and this was by far the worst hotel ($ for $) we stayed in!

The location is great - short walk from the train even with heavy luggage. Price (€100) was good for downtown Amsterdam. The hotel staff was helpful, friendly and knowledgable. (Great tip for local restaurant.) Basic room - well worn. Clean and airy. Bathroom good. Breakfast was a bit meager by our experiences in the Netherlands. Be ready to climb stairs. Happy that they had a place to lock our extra bags so we didn't have to lug them upstairs. They were in the process of adding 9 additional rooms. We would definitely stay there again.

We paid about £90 a night which seemed good value for Amsterdam. Room was small but adequate, but bathroom very small. Paintwork looking very tired. Nice view overlooking canal. No breakfast, but there was free toast in morning and a free coffee machine available all day which was great. Staff were all very friendly which made for a nice 4 night stay.

I've stayed in a plethora of hotels and hostels in Amsterdam, and Chic & Basic is, by far, the best. Admittedly, it is a tad more expensive than your average hostel in Amsterdam, but the hotel is centrally located, close to Centraal, and within a stone's throw of any trouble you might want to find in this city. The rooms are each unique and stylishly decorated, and the free espresso in the lobby is a great touch. You can't go wrong with this hotel.

Room Tip: Room 123, the best in Amsterdam.
