This hotel features in a lot of guidebooks and after reading the non-biased reviews on tripadvisor we decided that it seemed worth a visit.

My girlfriend and I were not disappointed. The room we were in (number 5) exceeded expectations as it was bigger than we expected and was well equipped with sink, wardrobe, 3 mirrors and very comfortable beds - this is a twin room.

The breakfast in the hotel was also very adequate with a selection of meats, cheeses and jams. Toast, tea/coffee and fresh orange juice was also available and as too were hot hard boiled eggs.

If we had any negative things to say about the hotel it would be the showers. The one on our floor did not work, and the ones on the other floors are in a room were you hang your clothes alongside the actual shower. This is fine, but you need to be careful that you don't soak your clothes when they are hanging and when you are getting dressed. It would be a lot better if the shower had a curtain or something with a seperate area for you to dry off at the side. However, this is not a major issue.

Overall, we would highly recommend this hotel - especially as you are not in Amsterdam to see the sights of your hotel!! It is not right in the central, however Rembrandtplein is not far away, and this then follows to Dam square - there is a tram line right outside which is easy to follow and use too.

  • Liked — The quality in relation to price
  • Disliked — The stairs when drunk
  • Tips/Secrets: — Get the number 4 tram that heads back towards centraal - it stops at Rembrandplein too

We really enjoyed our stay at the Prinsenhof and would stay there again. It's full of character, very 'european' in a great area of Amsterdam, right next to a tramline direct to the train station. The breakfast was lovely, very simple yet filling, and the house cat 'Prinse' greeted guests each morning.
Our room was really nice, a good size with a view over the canal in a typical Amsterdam neighbourhood. It was very reasonably priced, and although it was the middle of winter we were warm and toasty the whole stay (Feb 2006). If you're a fairly self-sufficient traveller, this is a great place to stay. The hotel is walking distance to lots of attractions, including the Van Gogh museum.

Myself and my partner have stayed here 4 times now. Never fails to amaze me how cheap yet brilliant this hotel is and it is on the finest canal in town, lots going on. The rooms were basic as usual but we had room 3 which is really big compared to a couple of others we have stayed in.

By far this is the best value B&B hotel in town. Shared bathrooms are very clean. I wouldn't bother getting a room with an en suite unless you were staying for more than a few nights, it might be nice if you're staying more than a week. Breakfast is a filling selection of breads, cheeses, meats, spreads and drinks, nothing amazing but like i say, quite filling.

In response to the review titled: "terrible..." below I would suggest that you get confirmation of your reservation approx a week before you go. This way you are reassured and if the worst has happened and you dont have the reservations you thought you had, you can always get somewhere else. Above all, chill out, this is Amsterdam after all...

  • Liked — canal location, close proximity to tram line
  • Disliked — nothing, its great
  • Tips/Secrets: — yes, the bar next door is brilliant, great toasties!

We stayed there for a couple nights in August 2006. The price was very reasonable; the location was excellent (right on the tram stop); the breakfast (which was included in the price) was very good and filling (warm boiled eggs, decent ham and salami, good cheese, excellent coffee). The room was clean, the bathroom down the hallway was also clean, no complaints. Hotel stuff was very friendly and spoke perfect English. The only thing that might be a concern for some people is the famous Amsterdam stairways, which are very steep and narrow. So be prepared. Our room was at the very top, but climbing up and down was more like an adventure for us, rather then an incinvenience. But I can understand that it migh be just that for some people. In that case opt for paying more and staying on the lower floor.
In our opinion the hotel is very pleasant and we would definitely stay there again.

You don't travel europe over Easter without a reservation and at least 2 confirmation e-mails. I found Hotel Prinsenhof to be splendid. I stayed in Room 10 (in the attic) and absolutely loved it. Yes, it is a 1star hotel, yes, it is budget and yes, you do share a bathroom but then again, you only sleep there....Staff was freindly....well as friendly as the Dutch get. I arrived on Easter Sunday, and although no staff was on duty, my key and a welcome letter was left at "Onder de Ooievaar" a bar next to the hotel......(after clear instructions on the hotel-door to do so). The room was clean, the breakfast adequate with meats, eggs and bread, juice and coffee. The location is excellent, right on TRAM4 next to the Prinsengracht stop. My room and the shared bathroom and shower was cleaned everyday and had lovely chats over breakfast with all the other people staying in the hotel. For 60Euro for a doulbe you cant find better, more quite and more attractive in Amsterdam. Anytime again.
