Had a lovely time in the A Train. We booked the family room, it was a very generous size and on two floors. 2 Twins, kitchen, dining table, cot bed and a lovely shower (no bath) on the first floor. Above in the attic are 3 more twin beds. They also provided a large amount of childrens toys. Could easily accommodate a family of 5, was more like an apartment. As it's at the very top of the building theres lots of stairs (not unusual for Amsterdam) though there is a lift you still have to negotiate a few stairs to your 'Nest'. It can also get quite hot up there. Just open the windows if need be. Room and Hotel was clean, full of character, staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was adequate, some fresh fruit would have been nice, and perhaps the coffee from a vending machine was not ideal, but I'm fussy like that. Would heartily recommend this great little independant family run hotel to any families wanting a comfortable hassle free stay in Amsterdam.

I stayed for two nights with a friend in this hotel at the end of August, and then one night by myself. The rooms are small but the place is clean and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was ok. The best thing was that the hotel is REALLY close to the train station...this was a relief since when we got to Amsterdam it was pouring rain. The single I stayed in was tiny but comfortable. I would definitely stay here again.

The A Train is an adorable little "choo-choo train decorated" hotel.
It's very clean and offers a nice big breakfast each morning with the
price of the room. The staff are wonderfully fun, friendly and helpful.
It's located directly across the street from the Centraal Train Station. I
literally pulled into town on the TGV train from Paris, rolled my
luggage across the street, checked in and walked around the corner, directly
behind the hotel to dine on wonderful tapas at Joselito's Tapas Bar.
You cannot beat the location if you need to travel in or out of the
Centraal station, especially on early or very late arrivals. It's a great
place to stay with lots to do & see in the immediate area!

Management response from BIGBOSSAmsterdam, owner
(Management representative)
Apr 12, 2005
Sorry to here you were disapointed.
It's not fair to compare us with the RHO hotel with 164 rooms and restaurant facillities. We only have 34 rooms and no restaurant kitchen.
Because of bad expierience, false/bouncing credit cards, everyone has to pay in advance now.
Our advice check out the other reviews.

My wife and I are both in our fifties, and have visited Amsterdam many times over the years. We visited for the New Year celebrations in December 2004, but the Rho Hotel we normally stay at was full, so we booked the A-Train, which was also 3 stars. On arrival, the manager was extremely rude, insisting we pay 596 Euros (for four nights) in advance, even though he had our credit card number to secure the booking. Paying in advance like this has never before happened in Amsterdam, and of course it means you have no bargaining chips if services or facilities are poor. It also displays a remarkable lack of trust in the hotel guests - ok in a flop house, maybe, but not in a three-star hotel. The room was pleasant and clean, but the breakfast was really very basic, and not of 3-star quality at all - very poor quality plastic bread, which you had to constantly ask to get toasted, cereals, and drinks from a vending machine. No fresh fruit, and the only 'cooked' item was boiled eggs. It is hard to see how they could offer much less and call it 'bed and breakfast' at all, and it was certainly not three-star quality. If you're paying three star prices, look elsewhere - customer service and quality is much better in other 3-star hotels. We certainly won't be going there again unless we're desperate for somewhere to stay.

Stayed for a week in the "loft apartment" with four of us. Love the A-Train. Friendly staff, clean rooms and hotel - great breakfast included every morning. The price was more than reasonable. The location was also great, right across from the train station, but somehow not in the heart of all the chaos. Going back to Amsterdam again and already have my reservation at the A-Train.
