“Friendly small hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

Located a little outside of the 'city centre', but if you like walking on city trips, it is also possible to walk to Museumplein and Leidseplein. Otherwise the number 2 tram provides an easy, regular service almost straight to the door. Vondelpark is only two streets over, so if you are visiting in summer it's the perfect place to have a picnic and just chill out in the middle of the city.

There is a small supermarket nearby, and an honesty bar to get cold drinks/snacks.

Although there are obviously changes going on in the hotel, the staff were all friendly and helpful, and the overall atmosphere is very friendly cozy. There are a lot of comments on the steepness of the stairs, but I didn't find them all that bad - in fact, by typical Amsterdam standards they are very generous. Staff were also available to help carry luggage which was a nice touch. We reported a fault with the bathroom lock in one room, and although the staff were not able to fix it themselves, they kept us updated on the progress and also provided tea/coffee making facilities on request and made sure we had everything we needed.

I stayed in a single room, and although small, everything was clean and comfortable for a two night stay. The bed was rather soft so may not be to everyones taste, but was perfect for me.

Thank you very much for your kind words, also towards the team. We always try to offer help carrying luggage up & down the stairs. That's part of running a hotel in a typical early 1900 Amsterdam building, no problem!
We are indeed in final stages of the renovation, curtains, floor and furniture in the lobby being the last part, being done the coming weeks. Then we will have an up-to-date hotel offering our famous 'small enough to care' hospitaity. Hope to see you again during your next visit to Amsterdam.

Very welcoming staff. We recommend the hotel for its proximity to Museums area, only 15 minutes of walk to reach Rijkmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum.

To improve : double bed for couples; slippery mattress on twin beds.

Room Tip: If couple, ask for a double bed not twin.

Thank you very much for your feedback, we appreciate this a lot.

Good to hear that you liked the location in the very heart of the museum/fashion district. With respect to the beds, we now use topper matrasses in all double rooms. Should you decide to stay with us again, we will make sure you get one of those rooms!

We were given room which opened out in sit out garden. Room was big with four beds , we had asked for double bed room but was given a family room . We are fortunate to meet the previous owner and present . Small hotel good for value . Bit far from city center but close to Vangoha Museum Local transport in Amsterdam is very good so the distance does not matter much. This hotel needs to improve a bit.

Room Tip: Rooms on first floor since they have no lift.

Good to read that you enjoyed your room and the quiet garden, that is indeed a little gem in Amsterdam.
The hotel is located in Amsterdam Zuid, the museum quarter of the city, therefore as you mention very convenient for visiting the main museums in the city. In walking distance of the hotel you will find the exclusive shops in the Cornelis Schuyt straat and of course all high end fashion brands in the PC Hooft straat. Should you want to visit other important tourist highlights like the Leidseplein, the flower market etc, tram 2 stops in front of the hotel and will get you there in 5-10 minutes.
And as mentioned in previous reactions on reviews, we are in the middle of renovation the hotel, so very soon we can share images of the new look & feel.

After the reviews on Trip Advisor we were expecting some great things but felt a little let down, especially for the price. The rooms are very tired with uncomfortable beds that are very, very soft. On our first night we returned to the room to find the light wouldn't work, a member of staff came to look but found it stuck and promised to 'write it in the book' so it could be fixed the next day. Thankfully there was a small floor lamp so we could manage. The next night, it was still broken and this time the problem was put in 'the computer'. When we checked out the next morning I mentioned the light again and was offered no apology and the new member of staff wrote it down 'again'. Finally, the stairs were very grubby and looked like they needed a very good clean. We weren't expecting 5 star luxury, but we have stayed in much nicer family run hotels. It's a shame because because the location is great and the place has loads of potential.

Sorry to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations. Towards your remark on the lack of action after you reported the light being broken, there is nothing for me to do but apologise. This should not have happened and should have been easy to fix.
You might have read that we are in the middle of renovating all rooms and the lobby-lounge, your observation that the carpet in the corridors are in need of replacement is correct and I can tell you this is the (logical) last part of the renovation works which are almost done. We sincerely hope that during your next visit to Amsterdam you will stay with us again and we can show you the new 'Hotel Zandbergen' and proof to you we do know what service is about!

We were being sent to Norway for business, and decided to go a little early and visit the Netherlands. During our time in Amsterdam we spent two nights at Hotel Zandbergen. We researched the trip intensely, and decided to go with this option due to the reasonable price (a bit more than the hostels, but much less than larger hotels) and its convenient location. We were not disappointed in the least - the neighbourhood is beautiful, quiet, and a few steps away from the city's largest park. Bus/tram stops are very close, and it is only a 10-15 minute walk to the museum district....and more importantly if you are travelling on a budget or just don't want to eat out every meal, only minutes from a good grocery store. The staff are courteous, very helpful, and made us feel at home. I have read some odd negative reviews on this site and really think these must have been from rude people, or people who were expecting "American" style hotels in a small European neighbourhood. This isn't a Hilton, but it an excellent value for the money. They even helped with our luggage (stairs are steep in Amsterdam), stored our luggage for our last day, and filled our water bottles whenever we needed! I can't say enough good things.

Room Tip: Please note - ALL places such as this (ie. former homes in Amsterdam) have steep stairs due to the f...

We stayed at this hotel on a weekend last july. We arrived before the check in time, but we were able to get our room in advance. The staff has been very helpful til the end of your stay. they even provides us with water for the flowers we bought just before leaving.

Room Tip: the fisrt floor is the better one, as there is no lift.

We stay there for 2 nights, price is reasonable, location is excellent to visit the museums area and the city center, you can buy the ticket of all main tourist attraction so you can skip the queue and you can also ride a bicycle. Staff is friendly and the hotel is very clean. Better to book in advance the breakfast considering the average price in Amsterdam it comes cheap. We will definitely come back.
