“Our favorite hotel in Amsterdam”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2011

Hotel Zandbergen managing director, mr Henk was most helpful and welcoming. Makes our stay at the hotel most enjoyable & memorable. The rest of the staff are courteous and helpful.

Our room albeit it being compact is quite compact, it is well design to fully utilise all space without it seem congested. The bathroom modern and clean. Bonus - we got a room leading to a garden where we can sit, read and enjoy the sun.

Like all Amsterdam hotel, staircase narrow and hard to navigate with heavy suitcases. However, Henk and his staff are most helpful in carrying your suitcase to your room so not an issue.

Breakfast - wide selections of bread ( fresh croissants), fruits, coffee + tea, juices, meat and cheese.

The #2 tram to Leidseplein ( central entertainment area) and Central station is only 5 mins walk. Around the hotel are nice cafe, restaurants and fresh organic market.

Perfectly located next to Vondelpark where you can spend hours walking, cycling or just sitting i the park to enjoy nature. Two tram stops to museums (Van Gogh & Rijksmuseum). Tickets available from the hotel front desk.

Tip: if you staying more than 1 day in Amsterdam, buy the 2/3/4 days tram tickets which also entitle you to hop onto busses. They all belong to the GVB group. Every trip on tram cost you E2.60 so the day ticket will allow you to hop on and off unlimited for 24 hrs.

We actually stayed from 29 Mar to 4 Apr 2010 (just writing the review so late TripAdvisor won't let me pick a date earlier than July 2010!). Henk had acquired the apartment next door for expansion and we had the use of it as a family suite for our stay - plenty big enough for 6 of us. Convenient for trams etc. Henk and all staff were cool. Breakfast was friendly and just felt comfortable. Great value for money.

My husband and I arrived in Amsterdam on an overnight train trip from Budapest (via Munich) at 9:00 a.m. on a Sunday . We arrived at Hotel Zandbergen a little before 10:00 a.m. fully expecting not to be able to check in because of the early hour. Henk and his staff made us welcome instantly by offering coffee, a map, and suggesting things to do nearby while we waited for our room to be ready. They were very busy with guests checking out but managed to get us into our clean room by 11:00 a.m.! We stayed in "Evert's Room," a lovely "apartment" in the building next door to the hotel. We had a kitchen, sitting area bedroom and bath plus a charming balcony that overlooks a lovely garden. We were enjoying our complimentary glass of wine with lunch on our balcony when my husband accidentally closed the balcony sliding door, stranding us on the balcony! Thanks to a friendly neighbor hearing our pleas for help, Henk was summoned and we were rescued. This is just one example of many throughout our stay where the service was outstanding. The beautiful Vondel Park was only a few blocks away. We exercised in the park everyday and used it as a shortcut to the city center. The hotel is also only a few blocks from the Museum Quartier but in a quiet neighborhood so we slept very peacefully. Henk, the owner, and his staff worked tirelessly to make our stay pleasurable, giving sightseeing advice and making sure we were comfortable. We truly felt as if we were staying with friends.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at Hotel Zandbergen for a week in May. I had already been in Holland 3 weeks prior to booking in. By the way if you book directly with the hotel you are entered into a drawing to win a free night. The hotel i stayed in just before Hotel Z. was far more expensive, and yes it was fancier, but Hotel Zandbergen definitely surpassed the more expensive one in every way, especially in regards to service. Here is where i have to mention Henk the owner. I have never experienced such a perfect balance of professional service with a personal touch. I felt so welcome and safe, and at home. I felt no request would have been denied. I never wanted to leave, and actually extended my vacation by a few days to enjoy more of the hotel and the surrounding areas. The location for me was ideal as i could choose to have a picnic in the park across the street, dine at any one of the fabulous cafes in the neighborhood, or go around the corner to the wine shop and grocery store and prepare my own meal back at the hotel. A quick tram ride and i was right in the center of town. I cant say enough good things about this place. I have already booked in for my next vacation and i am bringing my sisters with me so they can enjoy the same hospitality i did.

The first thing to know about the Hotel Zandbergen is that there is no elevator (lift) and that the steps are steep and narrow and wind a bit. Carrying your luggage 2 flights may not be too easy, depending on your physical condition. Especially if you are on the top floor, you will not be wanting to be going back to your room often.

Aside from that, the host and staff were especially friendly, and they helped make the stay more enjoyable. The breakfast was good and included in the room rate - breads, cheese, cold cereal, coffee, tea, cold cuts, yogurt, fresh fruit, etc. Use of a computer in the lobby area is free.

The room was a bit small but very clean, and the neighborhood is quiet. If you do not want to stay near the hustle and bustle of downtown, then this is an excellent location with a number of restaurants that offer a variety of menus, plus there is the beautiful and very large Vondel Park within walking distance. The two main museums - Rijks (for Rembrandt) and Van Gogh (check out the top floor too) are within walking distance. You can catch the No. 2 tram that takes you into the town center nearby.

When walking about the city, watch out for both cars and bycyclists as they come at you from all sides, and the only other city where I have seen so many on bycycles was Copenhagen. Everyone seems to be on a bike - young or old, casual or business attired. It is a way of life here.

As has been mentioned, accomodations are clean, tram stop is steps away, museum district is a short walk from the hotel. Rates very reasonable for Amsterdam. Wonderful neighborhood by the city park. Safe.

But the star of the show, for us, was Henck. The guy is like the energizer bunny. Perpetual motion to satisfy guests. Knowledgable & thoughtful.

The staff at Hotel Zandbergen are terrific -- friendly, welcoming, and helpful. They really go out of their way to make your stay as pleasant as they can. The location is good, just a few blocks from the art museums, and with easy access to the tram line. Also, as they say in their website, they do have the best coffee in town!

Room Tip: Ask for a room that does not face onto the street.
