“Great location but noisy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2012

We stayed here for five nights in early June. There were some good things and some not so good, and I'm not sure I'd recommende it wholeheartedly. So:
Good things:
Very helpful and cheerful staff.
Fantastic central location, close to railway station and all attractions
Decent bedroom, everything pretty clean.
Lovely lobby which used to be a theatre. It had excellent wifi. The wifi didn't work in the bedroom but that wasn't a problem for us.

OK things
Breakfast was ok but not special. There was a reasonable choice but the menu items did not change at all over the five days. The coffee was good, but the bread was only ordinary at best.

Less good things
Extremely noisy at night. We did choose a room which faced the road, though, and it was good to be offered a choice when we got there. Carousing in the street went on till 3am most nights (football international included) and was then followed by street sweepers.
Bathroom - the shower was certainly not a power shower and dripped constantly. The hot water was dangerously hot and the cold tap was difficult to turn on. I am probably being a bit picky when I say the towels were quite small and thin.
The room was very warm even in the cool weather we had that week. The bathroom was like a sauna when we got back to it after a day out.

So to sum up I would recommend the hotel if it's something cheap and cheerful you're after. If you want a bit of luxury I would look elsewhere. I certainly wouldn't think it's as bad as painted by some reviewers and I think it's maybe improved this year. There were no issues with cleanliness for instance or noise from neighbouring bedrooms.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper do not choose a room on the road side.

My husband and I stayed at the Rho from 7-10 June '12. The Rho wasn't the cheapest hotel but I went by the good reviews here on Trip Advisor, and the fact that I could cancel quite close to the first night without incurring penalties. The hotel also has a lift (many others don't and you don't really want to be struggling up flights of very steep stairs in these tall, narrow Dutch buildings, especially at my age!).

I had cause to email the Rho a few times before our stay and must say their responses were quick and helpful.
The hotel is very easy to find from Centraal Station and only a 10-15 minute walk. The Rho is right on Dam Square which is an excellent central location for getting out and about to all the usual amenities and attractions. The Anne Frank museum and house was one tram stop (we walked, 15 minutes) and the Van Gogh museum was 3 or 4 tram stops.

We were allocated a lovely big room on the third floor with a wall of huge windows. The shower was a huge walk-in one, almost like a wet room. We could get the BBC on the TV. The room was clean and the bed comfortable; however the towels had an off-putting bready smell to them, not bleached clean. The safe was broken. There was a good sized fridge in the room which was nice for keeping wine, beer and water cold. There were no tea and coffee making facilities in the room, as common with many european hotels.

It was hard to sleep on the first 2 nights due to the number of loud drunks walking past the hotel. This wasn't helped by the fact that we like to sleep with the window open, so on the third night we kept the windows closed and the sound levels were much better (despite Holland losing 1-0 to the Danes!).

The reception staff were always very pleasant and helpful and the breakfast buffet choice was comprehensive and very good quality. All in all a very comfortable stay.

APPALLING:

Bavaria Bier bar opposite the hotel in Dam Square - Daylight robbery - they charged me €18.50 for a pint of Guinness and a single gin & tonic. I was appalled and told the barman; he said that's what to be expected if you're buying drinks in Dam Square (I disagree). This was the only low point in an otherwise wonderful stay in Amsterdam. I feel we may have been conned as tourists by this bar - PLEASE AVOID, unless you don't mind being ripped off.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED:

Koh-i-Noor Indian restaurant (http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g188590-d1419042-Reviews-Koh_i_Noor-Amsterdam_Noord_Holland.html) Centruum, Amsterdam - lovely food and wonderful service, about a 10 minute walk from Dam Square, cost me €50 for 2 people with drinks.

Opposite the Anne Frank museum on the other side of the canal is a lovely cheese shop were you can try before you buy and the staff are very helpful and friendly.

I hope you have found my review helpful.

This hotel is in an excellent location for exploring amsterdam, being right in Dam Square means your not far from anything. The entrance is slightly tricky but eventually you lead into an open and decorated of the time, Lobby area.

The rooms are a good size for hotels in Amsterdam, but falls when it comes to providing 21st century amenities such as wifi in the room - this is only available in the lobby area.

For exploring and visiting this is more than enough, its location outweighs anything negative.

Nice staff - no facilities - no air con, as a result one needs to have windows open, and due to excellent location it is very very noisy till 5am!! Ok if you are partying not if it's a business trip!

Everything was perfect . Location - the best, practically on Dam square and not far from railway station Amsterdam Centraal. Room - big enough, clean and quiet (inside yard view) , very good bathroom with a new equipment. And wi-fi in the room was excellent .
There are elevator, luggage room (free) and tea- and coffee machine (1 euro) at the hotel. Good quality breakfast. And special thanks to the hotel's staff.

Superb location... An excellent breakfast which sent us out every day with quite a satisfied tummy. Staff was very helpful. We were in Amsterdam in another hotel on the first half of our stay and at RHO the second half. When we asked if we could just leave the luggage till check in time they straightaway let us check in at 10 in the morning without making us wait. Comfy beds. Wifi was a tiny bit too slow. Only thing is room was a bit noisy. We could hear the shuffling of the feet from room above and when the neighbours used the toilets. As everyone goes out day and night noisy room was not a very big issue. Maybe we should have asked for quieter room. Other than that it was a very good stay at RHO.
