I booked this hotel because it had received higher ratings than many 4 star hotels and was working out slightly cheaper with breakfast included than the others would have been. I wish I had gone with the 4 stars.
Upon check in we were greeted by a male receptionist. He ran through hotel info quickly and took payment, this was where customer service ended. The reception appeared clean and well maintained but the hallway leading to bedroom was a gaudy metallic purple with a dirty purple carpet, could do with an update.
Our room (35) was nicely decorated with a flat screen TV and large bed. Unfortunately the bed sheet consisted of two singles joined together and the duvet had a lovely plastic under cover, apart from this the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was clean and modern with a bath and fantastic power shower, there was no extraction in the bathroom, nor were there any face cloths or more worryingly bath mats making for a rather slippery floor. The hotel toiletries consisted of one bottle of very soapy smelling liquid, an all in one, bring your own toiletries if at all fussy.
There are no tea or coffee making facilities in the room, this I was already aware of prior to booking. The website states "tea or coffee on request". On our first morning we didn't get up for breakfast as being parents to a 5 month old we enjoyed a well deserved lie in. When I got up I called reception to request a cup of tea and a coffee. I was told very bluntly "we don't offer room service" so if you want a coffee in your room you have to get dressed and make your way down to reception to bring it back up your self. We just went out for coffee in the end as the staff seemed so unhelpful. On our second night we returned to the hotel at 1am and stood outside the locked side door for at least 10 minutes waiting for someone to answer it, we had been informed the night porter was on duty but really there should be some way of using your key card to get in.
We didn't have breakfast in the hotel in the end so may as well have booked a more luxurious hotel, will try the Amsterdam American next time.
I work in a hotel and would fear for my job if I was as unhelpful and surly towards customers as the staff in this hotel are, customer service is most obviously not a priority to these folks.
