“Reasonable value and location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2013

Clean, friendly, quiet and very well located, however the decor and the breakfast were unimaginative although adequate. Worth the trade off if one is looking for a budget option.
Very close to museums, canal cruise, restaurants and shops.

Cozy and clean with an excellent location and one of the friendliest staffs I've run across in my travels! I agree that the hotel does need some freshening up but this could be said about many other moderately priced hotels in Amsterdam. (My wife and I have been to Amsterdam some twenty times). The breakfast was typically Dutch with a good variety of foods and beverages available. The location was terrific, less than a fifteen minute walk to all the major museums as well as Vondel park. The entertainment district and the better shops in Amsterdam were also about a 15 minute walk away. Bus 197, to and from the airport, was also a 10 -15 minute walk from the hotel. We will probably stay at the Owl on our next trip to Amsterdam.

Room Tip: Room 51 had twin beds pushed together that,in effect, gave us a king bed,

We spent a wonderful week cruising the Rhine from Basel to Amsterdam with Viking cruises and decided to tack on a couple of days in Amsterdam to finish off. There was a large conference in the city the days we wanted to stay and so there wasn't a lot of choice of hotels and, though the Owl is one of Kirker travel's portfolio, it wasn't up to the standard we normally expect from them.

First the pluses: it's well situated - about half an hour's walk to the station through the middle of the city; it's clean and the bed and shower were good; the staff were wonderful. So what's not to like? Well, the whole place was in need of a facelift. If I say the decor was orange and teak in the bedroom, including the bedcover, perhaps you will get the idea! The towels were threadbare to the point of fraying - in my house most of them would have been demoted to cleaning cloths and I'm not quick to throw mine out! There is free wifi, which is good, but it was slow and unreliable. The lift was scratched and battered, the carpets in public areas were in serious need of cleaning and preferably replacing and there was a general feeling of 1970s Sindy.

Added to that, the breakfast, we felt, was mediocre to say the least, not in terms of quantity or variety, but in terms of quality: everything seemed to come out of a packet or a bottle. The bread was SLICED ( why on earth a continental capital city hotel didn't provide freshly baked bread when every corner has a bakery on it utterly defeats us) and worst of all, the coffee, which came out of a machine, was undrinkable. When we arrived, we were given some superb coffee to welcome us, so we were at a loss to explain why the hotel didn't provide the same for breakfast?

If you are looking for a comfortable, reasonably priced hotel not far from the centre of Amsterdam the Owl will suit you, we have no hesitation in saying this. But don't look there for an up to date, well- maintained property that provides you with a yummy breakfast to start your day's sightseeing. A pity - just a relatively small amount of money spent in the Owl could make such a difference to the effect it creates - and they could then easily charge a little more to cover the cost.

Ps there wasn't a fitness centre, but I tapped it accidentally and couldn't erase it!!

Room Tip: Try to go for a room facing into the garden at the back - much quieter, though the road on which the...

I was booked into this hotel as part of a business visit. The location can't be faulted and the staff are very pleasant. For the price it's good value for money although the decor is somewhat tired and although WiFi was available it was very slow and kept losing its connection.

This hotel was fairly priced, had a lift, good breakfast and very clean room. I liked this location, off the main street, but very handy to trams, walking areas and museums. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful, as I was alone .

It's a good hotel in a very good location, next to interesting places in Amsterdam (Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Hard Rock Cafe). The bedrooms are comfortable and clean. They have WiFi connection and a public computer if you don't have one. The breakfast was very nice & plentiful, in a nice dining room. All the staff was very friendly and helpful. The Hotel it's next to a tram station, 20 minutes from the central station. It's next too a City Tour bus station.

Good, simple, clean hotel with a cosy lounge area and little garden for coffee, breakfast. Nice 'cared for' feel to the place. Well maintained. Very friendly helpful staff.

Bedroom was spotless with a comfortable bed. The bedroom decor wasn't anything special but didn't cause offence either.

Location is great. Quiet street , easy walk to museums and leidesplein square (with its bars and shops) and vondelpark for a stroll if u want some grass (the green type that cows eat!). Tram stops are close. Amsterdam is very easy to get around.

Breakfast started at 7.30 (an early start is a must if you want some quiet time at the museums before they get too busy). Simple (cheese, ham, eggs, cereals) but tasty enough, nice juice and coffee.

The nearby Rijksmuseum was brilliant. Van Gogh was good but very busy (August). It seems you can easily buy museum tickets in many Amsterdam shops - for the same price or slightly discounted. Those buying at the museums were stood in long lines!
