“It's a hostel.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2013

This is a hostel, not a resort, not a hotel. You will share a room with lots of people. You will share a bathroom with lots of people. The people at reception are not concierges, figure your own plans out, or ask specific questions. Breakfast will be continental not an American buffet. That all being said, for a hostel, this one is awesome! It is clean and safe (bring your own lock or buy one at the desk for a couple of Euro). I stayed for five days and never felt like someone was going to take my stuff or unsafe. The location is perfect. 20 minutes from the train station, 20 minutes from the museum, minutes from bars and restaurants. It is actually cleaner than some hotels I've stayed at.

I stayed here for Queensday 2013. I had a great time during Queensday, needless to say. The hostel is in a good location, very close to red light district and short walk to Rembrandt Square and the main square is not too far way either. Everything worked, was clean, staff were very helpful and friendly. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: not too many power outlets in the dorm room that I stayed in so plan ahead.

This was my first hostel stay but it was nothing out of the ordinary because I've spent lots of time in dorms. There's a lot to like about Stayokay Stadsdoelen, particularly:
1) The location. When all the hotels around you are charging upwards of 200 euros a night, you know you've found a good place. In fact, the hotel is somewhere between all the districts and just far enough from the Red Light district that you don't have to pass through it if you don't want to. It's very close to the train station (15 minute walk), the Museumsplein (20 minute walk), Rembrandplein (5 minute walk), the Dam (10 minute walk), etc. Some rooms have great views over the canal also.
2) The staff were always friendly and dealt with the most mind-numbing questions from guests. Their patience cannot be overestimated.
3) Security/safety are very good. There are lockers next to the rooms and also lockers downstairs that are paid. You don't have to bring your own lock (I didn't), in which case you can use the upstairs lockers. But in general, I didn't get the feeling that things would get stolen here.
4) It was mostly clean, though I imagine that if the hostel was completely full, the bathrooms would need a lot more frequent cleaning than they get (only once per day.)

And the lows,
1) What you book isn't what you get. A 10+ person dorm room is really a 20+ person dorm room, and if you request mixed, you might get it or you might not. The hotel doesn't care. It finds you a bed and that's where you're going to go. In that case, the website is definitely misleading.
2) No power outlets, almost anywhere. No personal lamps by the beds. If you want to charge something, either wait to do it in the lobby or find another place. I found this extremely frustrating and silly when there's free wifi.
3) The breakfast is terrible. I would rather they supplied a decent coffee machine and some juice, instead of the disgusting pieces of meat and old, decaying fruit. I know, free breakfast is great value in a hostel, but it's worth spending a few euros to eat a balanced, decent meal.

Thank you for your response!

Good to know that you enjoyed our wonderful location, the friendly staff and security.

Stayokay Stadsdoelen has large rooms to share or private rooms. On our websites it says 10+ rooms, some are 8 bedded, 12 bedded, 16 bedded or 20 bedded. We try to separate the couples and mixed groups from the only girls or only male travelers. For there own comfort and for the location of our bathrooms. The only male dormitory is next to the only male bathrooms. Did you ask the reception for a smaller rooms, in case of availability we could have moved you to a different room.

We appologize about the sockets, we are aware that people bring in many electronics these days. It is impossible to have more in the room, since it is a monumental building. To compensate we offer the free service to leave the electronics at the reception. We will charge them for you and you can pick them up 24/7.

Sorry to hear the breakfast was not to your liking. It is a typical Dutch breakfast with different kind of bread that you can toast. cereal, fruits, cheese, ham, coffee, thea, orange or applejuice.

We hope you enjoyed your stay in Amsterdam!

Kind Regards,
Anna

We spent 3 nights here during our Amsterdam stay as a group of 5 and found it quite good. The breakfast was awesome and we were able to take lunch for the day from that which kept costs low. The rooms were standard although there was a lack of available power points.
It was basic but sufficient and the upper floors had nice views over the canal.
There can be quite a few stairs to navigate if you are on a higher floor and there is no good area for hanging out to use wifi as it did not reach our room all the time and was pretty unreliable.
Also there is no kitchen facilities to use if you want to cook or keep food.
We would stay here again most likely if for a short period.

Stayed here for three nights with a friend in an all girls dorm. When booking we had indicated mixed, but they gave us the all girls when we checked in.

THE BAD
- reception staff (with the exception of the younger girl with dark hair who was really helpful and the only one who actually smiled). The rest of the staff don't care at all; they're only there to check you in, tell you the rules and stop you to see your security pass when you enter the building. We asked one of them what they would recommend seeing in Amsterdam. She then asked us in a very condescending tone - you came to Amsterdam without knowing what you want to see?The woman then took a pen and drew a circle around our entire map and said to us sarcastically - the major sites are here. OK, so it was a bit of a general question that we asked, but there was really no need for her to be blatantly rude and sarcastic. I was really shocked by her attitude, as it was the worst I have experienced in all my years of travelling. The moment was saved by the dark haired girl who gave us tips on places to eat, which streets were good for shopping, for the best canals etc.
- the bathrooms. The showers were always dirty no matter the time of day. There was always hair all in the drain and the toilets were passable but not spotless.
- lack of power points in dorms. We had two power points between 20 beds.
- no organised activities and no atmosphere. It's like going to school camp. It's a big, impersonal hostel and groups stick to themselves and it is not a good place to meet other travelers.

THE GOOD
- location. is in walking distance to all the major sites and to the bars in Leidsplein.
- breakfast. you get yogurt, cereal, muesli, breads (also rice cakes, ginger cake, rye crackers), cheese, ham, juice, tea, coffee and fruit.
- staff in the breakfast hall and kitchen are super friendly!
- big lockers to store stuff in (bring your own lock).

All in all I wouldn't stay here again and would recommend somewhere else. This place is clean enough and is pretty cheap for a good and safe location, so if that's what you're looking for it's ok. But if you're looking for something a bit more personal, friendly and social, go elsewhere.

Thank you for your response and rating!

Good to hear that you found the location, breakfast and staff to your liking!

We appologize for the staff member who was rude, We remembered the moment and made sure it will not happen again. I am happy to hear that one off our staff members saved the impoliteness, since this is not the way we speak to our guests.

Stayokay Stadsdoelen is a monumental building, the lack of power sockets is compromised with charging them for free in our backoffice. You can pick them up 24/7. The area were people come together are the breakfastroom, lobby, TVroom and in the summer the Patio outside.

We hope you enjoyed Amsterdam!

Kind Regards,
Anna

We stayed here for 3 nights during the queens day celebrations this year. The hostel had a great location, walking distance to everything we wanted to do. The rooms and bathrooms were kept clean and the beds were comfortable. Breakfast was free and offered more variety than other free hostel breakfasts I've had in the past; toast, cereal, meats and cheeses and fruit.

My only complaints are that it seemed to lack the communal atmosphere that many hostels have (may be attributed to the fact that everyone was very busy with queens day celebrations and we didn't actually spend that much time in the hostel) and the prices were very expensive paying nearly 50 euros a night for the two nights and 20 something for the third (again presumably because the demand caused by the celebrations.

Overall a good experience. I would recommend this hostel.

While the location of this StayOkay is excellent, the hostel itself is average.

The rooms were clean, but only one lightbulb in the room worked and there are no individual lamps. This made coming in after dark without waking anyone incredibly difficult as you couldn't see anything. Also, the lockers are not in the room which makes things more complicated.

The showers were hot, but there was no soap or paper towels.

The wifi was reliable and while they say it only works in the lobby, it worked in my room as well.

The free breakfast was really good and the employees are helpful and kind. I had a pleasant stay, but wouldn't necessarily stay again.
