“Great Hostel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2008

This was my first time staying in a hostel, and except for the girl who kept me up all night with her cough, it was great. The hostel staff wasn't overly friendly, but they were nice. The rooms were clean and so were the beds. The lockers were pretty big and they provide you with a lock. The bathroom area was always clean and had plenty of outlets for your hair dryer if you use one. The toilets themselves are pretty private with the doors coming to the ground, which is kinda nice when youre sharing a bathroom with total strangers. The hostel is not a party hostel, which is why i chose it. There wasnt a lot of socializing, so if you wanna meet lots of people, this might not be the place for you. I had no bed bug problems, and neither did my sister or friend. We were there for like 6 nights. The location is great, easy walk to the main areas, but far enough away that you get some sleep. They have 2 computers you can use, but the internet there is a little expensive, however its there if you really need it. I would stay here again.

I've stayed here many times over the last few years. Stadsdoelen is, in my expericence, clean, safe and in a great central location that quiet enough to get some sleep. It's not a party hostel, but there's no curfew and there is a cheap bar in the building - between 11pm and 7am you are expected to be respectful towards others who want to sleep. The place is always clean. Dorms and upper corridors are opened using the Vingt card system and there are very spacious lockers either in the room or corridor outside. Padlocks are available from reception (was it 3or 5 euros?, can't remember) if you don't bring your own.
I have started to book on the hihostels website as when I last booked they seemed to have a more favourable cancellation policy than booking directly with the hostel.
On one occasion I had to cancel a 4 day trip as my flight was cancelled, the hostel itself operated a no refund policy, but I re-booked later that year and I received one day free (which they didn't have to give me). If you need flexibility, I'd check the cancellation policy.
Nearby there is a large Albert Heijn supermarket on Jodenbreestraat, there's a great "soup shop" on the way there (other side of road from AH) and I also like the cafe Tisfris on the corner by the canal - the fresh mint tea is great. Have fun!
Must add - showers - girls only on the upper bathroom floor on the back stairs, the lower bathroom is co-ed. No idea about the facilities on the front stairs - have never ventured there!

hi the stayokay stadsdoelen is a hostel i will travel back to as it is cheap and a good hostel central to everything in amsterdam.the dorms are cleaned every day and is a comfortable stay in amsterdam. there is no curfew and the staff are all very friendly and the bar is a really good place to hang out with your friends. 5 mins walk you are in the rembrant plein its a square with lots of cafes and bars which is lively of a night. also the leidsplein by the hard rock cafe is where nightlife is aswell . take no notice to the other reviews about not having clean sheets as you put them on yourself clean everyday . if you are over 30 do not stay at this hostel as you will feel out of place as everyone is between 18- 25 mainy american backpackers but there are people from all over . you have to go to the red light district as you have to see it Unbelievable . all in all i would recommend this hostel and will be traveling back soon brett

This hostel was terrible!!! Not only was there hair in our "clean" sheets which we put on the beds ourselves, but I noticed red hives & bumps all over my body after sleeping there, which I soon found out were bed bug bites. It was a disaster when I got home, we had to fumagate our flat, and clean every piece of clothing..just incase they were in our clothes. DO NOT stay here...trust me, it's not worth it!

We stayed in an 8-people room (we were 7) so we had a "visitor" every two days, that was nice because we met interesting people. What we didn´t like was that they told us that they had gest kitchen and it wasn´t. We were going to stay there for 8 nights, so it was important for us to have a place to cook.
The breakfast was very good, the cafeteria was nice, with a very big window just in the canal. The rooms, showers and the hostel in general was clean. I would go again and recomment it. Was not expensive at all and right in the center of the town.

  • Liked — lugar y las instalaciones en general
  • Disliked — no tiene cocina
  • Tips/Secrets — hay sitios para comer a buen precio y bares por todos lados, solo tienen que disfrutar de la ciudad, es preciosa!!

Stayed in this hostel for three nights during an Interrail trip through France, Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium. Has a decent breakfast buffet included in the price. Stayed in a 12 person dorm room. Staff make an effort at trying to keep things clean, but the sheer affluence of people makes it difficult. Great location near nightclubs, cheap supermarket, Red Light District, food places, etc.

Big lockers to put belongings in safely away. 5 euro deposit for the locks.

Bed reservations are more expensive on weekends.
Nightly pubcrawl for about 10 euros.
Internet service.
