“Nice location but old room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2011

We booked a 4 people room and had an apartment with living room, kitchen and a small garden. The room is rather spacious compared to other hotel rooms in Amsterdam. But the furniture in the room and the quilt & pillow on the bed looks a little bit old. Although we had a kitchen, I guess nobody will use it since the appliance is not looks that clean and if you want to use them, you'll definitely wash it all over again.

We're lucky to have a room on the ground floor so that we do not need to step on the dangerous stairs.

The location of the hotel is rather nice. We park our car in the P+R of Olympic Stadium and take Tram 16 or 24 to the Museumsplein, it's only 5 minutes walk to the hotel. Tram 16 or 24 also can take you to the city center.

Stayed there for one night with my mum. Very friendly owner and staff members. When we checked in the hotel owner realised my mum is a 70-year-old woman and he immediately changed the room on the 1st floor for us so my mum didn't need to climb up the stairs.
The stairs is definitely a classic but if you are solo travellers or young couples looking for quiet night it's a very good choice.
Breakfast was plentiful. Light buffet with choice of drinks. Cozy dinning room.

Room Tip: Remember to inform the hotel if you travel with senior or very young children.

Some Commendations:
-The hotel is located in the museum quarter which was a perfect location – close to transport and the major museums (and beautiful museumplein) but still quiet at night.
-The hotel is also located in a typical Amsterdam house which was very pretty.
-The room, although very small and inclined (as it was in the hotel eaves), was clean, well appointed and charming with a lovely little view down the street.
-The bedding was clean and new which I greatly appreciated.
-The breakfast was good and it made a very good start to my day. I would simply caution that there is no bacon or sausages available. However, you can get eggs to order, a good selection of cold meats and fresh fruit. I would definitely recommend it.
-There is a lovely, vibrant restaurant the manager recommends around the corner from the hotel which serves Dutch food and was good value for money.
-The management was very helpful and arranged to have our baggage brought to our room which, when facing four flights of incredibly steep steps (as one does in Amsterdam) was much appreciated.
-In addition I was ill when we arrived and management immediately offered to change our room to one on a lower floor in case I was not in a condition to climb the steps.
-Management is very good with tips on what to see in Amsterdam and when as well as what is value for money.
-The tv was a good size and functioning.
-The hairdryer in the bathroom was effective.

Some issues:
-The stairs are steep which is a fact of life in Amsterdam and cannot be helped. Heed the hotel warning that if you are disabled, elderly or generally unable to climb such stairs, rather book a room on the first floor.
-The bathroom was very small with only a shower but nicely appointed and clean. I would not recommend it for a larger person though. The only problem was that the shower curtain was ineffective and, if you were not terribly careful, the whole bathroom flooded when you showered leaving you standing in a puddle when you went to the toilet or brushed your teeth. Had it been winter I would have been very upset. The problem is easily remedied by creating a larger ‘step’ between the shower and bathroom to hold back the water which I would recommend to the manager.
-Another issue was that there was no towel rail and/or towel hooks which meant you had to hang your wet towels over the back of a chair or on a door handle. Again, easily remedied.
-The bed was too soft and I kept rolling into the middle which did not always make for good rest - there was no base cover on the bed and the mattress base was visible.

Room Tip: Ask what size the bathroom is and on what floor the room is located so you know.

When we eventually found the place - because we got super lost, and it being tucked away on a side street, locals don't know of the place, and it was difficult to find. We were greeted by the lovely hotel owner - his name I didn't catch but I think it is a family run business and there was always someone at reception. The only down side was the massively steep stairs and for us to be told we were on the 4th floor and with no lifts had to lug our stuff all the way up, having said that the owner helped us up and I am more than grateful for that! We had a twin room with a balcony - it was lovely, it was very big and the beds were so comfortable, and the sink in the room was super convenient! The shared facilities was something I was concerned about but they were always free and clean and right next to us. Breakfast was included and was standard, the staff were very nice and offered help when we needed to find any places in dam. They even told us what the weather was going to be like! Coming back to the hotel after a long day, was a pleasure and in fact we walked to all locations - central dam and museums. House keeping was good and all in all for the price, comfort and experience I would stay there again! Thank you Hotel Washington!!

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony if you can, rooms are non smoking but it was ok to smoke there (we asked of course...

We stayed for a few days, in a comfortable, well-illuminated, clean, spacious and pleasant room on the third storey of the Hotel Washington. The staircase, steep and narrow, reminded us that we were living in Amsterdam. The room came with a balcony, and a safe, and from the hotelier the promise of any advice or assistance should we need it. For a charge we might have the washing done, or a cup of coffee. And a notice- board warned that, had we been too noisy, the consequences would be fairly draconian: this was not such a bad thing for us. The hotel is near the tram route: Amsterdam’s tram service being so efficient, we could commute easily and quickly to the city centre. And the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are an easy walk away. Breakfasts were generous and varied, … and there was additionally the offer of fried/scrambled eggs. We enjoyed staying at the Hotel Washington, and would happily return any time we might be back in Amsterdam.

Nice stay! Old hotel but clean. Very steep stairs. Comfortable beds, new bathroom. Clean towels and cleaning every day! Very friendly staff, they helped us print out boardingcards for our flight and made breakfast packages when we had to leave early. Good breakfast in quite a small breakfast room, we ate early so we had no problems getting a table. Good location, very close to the museums and close to the tramstop as well.
