“Great location and hostel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

The flying pig, as a very central hostel with great access to the party area and awesome restaurants. Easy access to trams and to central Amsterdam. There are a lot of stairs, so be prepared. would recommend.

The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Rooms were very clean, bathrooms and showers were exceptionally clean for a hostel. Everyday you would see the staff cleaning the rooms and commons areas. My only complaint is that there was only one electrical outlet in our room for 8 people, however everyone in my room was very cooperative about sharing the outlet.

If you spend some days in Amsterdam either alone or with your bf/gf, and you'd like to spend the night in a room with 1 or two beds, I recommend that you choose another hostel.

Please find below some of my reasons why I do this:

1. The room was very small, overheated, with a window looking to very ugly walls.
2. The staff wasn't that friendly one - they seemed to be arrogant and bored instead.
3. I don't regret many things in my life but one that I certainly do regret is not having shot some photographs in the bathroom - catastrophic conditions, using toilet, shower or anything related to water was always some adventurous but more often embarrassing or annoying challenge.

The location of the place is still great - it's in a peaceful, narrow street next to the Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark and near to the Museumplein and the "everyone's favorite" IAmsterdam "statue".

Room Tip: Very simple: just don't choose the 2-bed room(s).

Myself and my friend recently stayed here. It's on a beautiful street and just over the road from an awesome park.
The staff seemed helpful and checking in was no problem. The bar and smoking area are nice but the atmospher is off putting at times. It seems very cliquey amoung staff there who seem to occupy the smoking area most of the time. The bar is tiny so gets crowded which is fine but when it comes to breakfast it can be a bit of a problem getting a seat! Breakfast was good however, simple but I'm not fussy cereal, toast, eggs and juice. My only thing would be to get some better coffee than a jar of instant Nescafé. The rooms were really clean and the beds comfy. Our room had 5 bunk beds in, and no issues with other room mates. The showers are awesome! Overall a good hostel in a great location just the staff attitude is off putting.

Lots of flights of stairs in the hostel. Luckily my room was on the first floor, otherwise you'd have to lug your luggage through flights of stairs in a narrow path. No air con in hostel. Private shower and toilet in dorm room was good. Caged lockers under bunk beds. Limited seating area downstairs. Breakfast was standard - cereal and bread.

Designated smoking room was good. Each bunk bed had their own charging points. Beds were comfortable. Next to Vondelpark. Near tram stops. Very close to Rijksmuseum and canal bus stops. WiFi was free and good, occassionally dropped out.

Laid back and chilled out, a great location next to Vondelpark, close to Leidseplain and several museums. Albert Hein, the supermarket is not far. Free internet, clean, comfortable, great atmosphere, full kitchen, and breakfast included. I highly recommend this hostel.

Unfortunately the flying pig downtown hostel was booked up way in advance and so we ended up booking this one after hearing the flying pig were the best hostels to stay in. Therefore, we were expecting big things. We stayed in many hostels in our trip around Europe and I would have to say this was probably the worst. It's really not worth the extra money to stay here! There seemed to be many cheaper hostels in Amsterdam and the only good points about this one were that the beds were clean and it was walkable to good nightlife. The bar area was really small, we had to stand to eat breakfast as there is a lack of tables and chairs. The prices for drinks seemed pretty expensive too. The staff seemed to think they were really 'cool' but weren't friendly and one guy that kindly showed us our room (had to walk up loads of stairs with our backpacks) looked like he was completely stoned. Didn't find the hostel sociable in the slightest and wouldn't recommend it. Maybe downtown would be better.
