“Clean and well located, good budget hotel in a great location.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2011

This is a very nice, no-frills hotel located right in the middle of Amsterdam. The hotel is very clean and very well maintained. The room was very clean and in very good condition. The owner was very helpful and kind. This hotel is really well located just in the center of Amsterdam, two blocks away from The Dam and just around the corner of Anna Frank's house. I really recommend it, for a very nice budget hotel in a good location. The only but, is be careful since it has a very steep staircase with no lift, which could be problematic for some.

Room Tip: Ask for a back room in order to avoid noise.

Rooms were basic and small, but the location and price were great. Be careful of the steep staircase!

This hotel was perfect for a budget weekend away. The stairs are extremely steep but if you don't have much luggage and are fairly mobile, they should be manageable. We stayed in a great triple room, which was quite spacious, spartan but clean and quiet. Perfect for what we wanted, also location is 15 mins walk from central station and very convenient.

We stayed at the Hotel Aspen for two nights.

We stayed in room 5 which is a double room on the top floor. The room was very small but perfect considering we were only there for sleeping. The toilet and shower are in the hallway. The room was clean, it had a basin and also free Wifi.

There are a lot of stairs to climb, and yes they are steep, but it is a traditional Amsterdam building and there is no other way of getting to the top.

The location was fantastic. It is right in the heart of the city so walking distance to everything or there is a tram stop nearby.

I loved staying here! The location was perfect, just a short walk from Dam Square and right next to a delicious pancake house. Also our room had an amazing view! The staff/owner of the hotel was extremely helpful and friendly too. The room itself was comfortable, it just had two single beds and a desk and some chairs, and the bathroom was actually a pretty decent size. No complaints. The ONLY downside was the very steep and never-ending stairs! Apart from that it was great though. I would stay here again.

I really enjoyed my stay at Hotel Aspen. The folks at reception were always very nice, and seemed to be available at all hours of the day. We had a top floor room, and it was wonderful to wake up and watch the bicycle traffic. The windows don't block sound at night however, and it would have been hard to fall asleep if I weren't exhausted from sightseeing. The room was clean and well-maintained, and the beds were relatively soft. The staircase was a doozy. It's almost a vertical climb, and by the time I reached the third floor I was always ready to drop. That said, the staff were always offering to help with bags. The proprietor was also very friendly.

I can't add much to what most other reviewers have said. The only downfall (hopefully not literally...) is the first thing you find in the hotel is a flight of VERY steep stairs, but every hotel on the street had exactly the same type of stairs because they're all above shops and other businesses. I didn't have a problem with it, it was certainly exercise!! Probably not so good if you have lots of luggage though... or when you're drunk as hell!

The location is unbeatable - a couple of minutes walk from the Dam Square, Anne Frank Museum, Westerkerk, and a tram stop virtually right outside.

The owner was very friendly and helpful, he gave us advice on where to go, which trams to get to where, even provided us with maps, told us which restaurants are good, etc etc. He directed us to Bagels & Beans and a pancake house, both within a minute's walking distance, sadly we didn't have time to experience the pancakes, but the bagel place did easily the best bagels I've ever had, it was a wonderful little place! Definitely recommended.

The place itself was extremely clean, again a few stairs to climb to find our room, but that wasn't a problem, personally. A reasonably small room, but I am never bothered about size when it comes to hotels, after all I'm there to explore the city, not the hotel! There was a sink in the room but no toilet, there are shared toilets and showers between the rooms on the floor, which might be another downfall for some people.

However, it's a very cheap hotel, and when I was trying to decide where to stay, it was very difficult finding somewhere that seemed good and was cheap. I think I definitely made the right choice, it was the happiest medium I could have found, and it's perfect if you want a no-frills hotel with just somewhere to lay your head while you have fun in a brilliant city.
