“Hard choice in a town with mostly more expensive options”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2012

Each time I go to Amsterdam I get more and more frustrated. Room prices seem to me to be the highest in all of Europe (Paris is way cheaper. Maybe London is about the same).

The price per night at the Boatel was at about my threshold of what I was willing to spend. Before writing this review, I read through a sample of the other reviews and I must say, many are spot on.

Plus:

Very good breakfast with excellent coffee.

Minus:

This is a boat. It does move (wakes from other boats). I got "sea legs" (nausea).
Bathroom is not a room. More like a closet with a shower and toilet inside.
Paper thin walls. You can understand people talking in the next room.
Not a lot of value for the price (but that is pretty much true at all hotels in Ams.)

Room Tip: Consider staying in Haarlem, a great town a short train ride away from downtown Amsterdam.

This hotel was ideal location and excellent value. Come out of the rear of the central station, walk to the far right of the pier and the ferry to the botel is approx 8 mins. The boat itself is stuck out in a bit of an industrial type area but it's clean, comfy and ideal enough to lay your head close enough to central Amsterdam.

The rooms were cleaned all the days we stayed. The showers and bathrooms were small, ship cabin like but you get what you pay for. The room was warm and the bed comfy. All I want when staying in a good value place! The breakfast was plentiful... Cereal, toast, fruit, yoghurt, croissants.... Again, excellent value.

After reading some reviews, I was expecting a bit of noise but it was very quiet at night. We did ask for a double room rather than a twin which is allocated as standard when booked online but the staff changed our room on request... Cheerfully! Lovely pleasant staff. Would stay here again.

We have just returned form a weekend stay on the Amsterdam Botel. we had a fantastic time. we wasn,t looking forward to going after reading some of the reviews. but we went with an open mind.Ok the cabins are not as good as on a cruise ship. but they was very spacious, and the bathroom was adiquat. the shower was great. We only took hand luggange so i didn,t take an Hair dryer but was able to hire one from reception for a deposit of 10 euro,s. The Breakfast was continental. with hot and cold buffet. but there was Sausage / Bacon/ Beans and boiled eggs so there was enough to eat. the Bar also did Snacks. such as Cheese Toasties. and Beefburgers. The Bar prices was very Reasonable as well. alot cheaper than in centeral Amsterdam. We also ate lunch at a restaurant very close to the Botel. on the Fri and on the Saturday night we ate there in the evening. because we was so tired after walking round amsterdam. The Free Ferry from Amsterdam Train station was great to the Botel.it was so fun it takes about 10/15mins to the dock near the Botel. So we would recomend the BOTEL as somewere to stay.it was very clean and the Staff was very Helpful.its not as posh as some Hotels but u realy only sleep there and get changed to go out so for what it was it was very good. The beds was also very comfortable and there was NO NOISE at night like there would have been if we had stayed say at the Ibis or a centeral Hotel.

Room Tip: we stayed in room 333. which is faced onto the water side. good views over the river and the ferrys...

We found the acomodation clean tidy the staff were helpful The breakfast facilities were good with mainly continental style breakfast yet a little cooked meat and cereals. The rooms albeit small were comfortable enough wit a good view of the harbour and boats Basic shower and wc facilitie with a very small bathroom Yet overall a very good base to stay in Amsterdam with a regular and reliable ferry service to and from the wharf to the city centre Dont expect the Ritz yet for what you pay its good overall value and we would definitely reccomend a visit

Room Tip: Try and get a room on the left and side this is the harbour view the right offers...

very clean, the staff are a nightmare apart from 1 young man who was working the evening shift, the chiness lady on reception would rather play bubble bobble than deal with the staff and if you have the misfortune to meet basil himself a big tall man who can only deal with 1 person at a time. Took him 20 mins to take my order for a coffee.wouldnt recomend.

Room Tip: go to a more central location.

We stayed at the Botel for four nights and though it was excellent value for money. The rooms are clean and adequate for a base. We only managed to have breakfast once and that too was ok, there is both continental and some cooked items.

We had room 345 which faced out onto the water and had great views of the skyline at night. There is free parking at the hotel which is great as we drove to Amsterdam, the hotel is about 15 mins away from central station via ferry. We didn't have a problem with this just thought of it like a taxi home at the end of the night.

We had a great time here and would stay here again!

This will be my second review of The Amstel Botel as myself and Wife have just returned from a long weekend break to Amsterdam.

Firstly and to clear the air - I've been reading reviews about the Botel on Trip Advisor and I am amazed that people go here if there expecting the Ritz?

The Botel is a cheap alternative, offering a decent standard of bed and breakfast. As stated, The rooms are not massive. We stayed in room 217 which is located on the reception level, facing the NDSM Werf Pier and Amsterdam skyline...............The Best Side!

Our room consistered of a queen size bed, a small coloured tv, radio alarm clock, wardrobe and drawer space. And a small toilet, shower and sink. Please note that all of the before mentioned are cleaned daily, towels and small collection of toiletries and if you require extra items, pillows etc then just ask. Alarm calls from reception are also bookable. If your flight is a early departure, you can also pre book the shuttle bus to take you to the 24 hour ferry, situated directly opposite Central Station.

Getting to the Botel couldn't be easier. From the airport, catch a train to Amsterdam Central. Once there, walk to the rear of the station, cross over the road and turn left. Next, you need to get on a boat. Head to Pier 1 (Far End), you'll see NDSM WERF. The boat is free and runs every 30 minutes.

The boat does not stop and delivers you directly next to the Botel. "What's Easier!"

Boat timetable for LAST boat only - Fri / Sat - 00.45hrs Sun / Mon - 23.45hrs.

Don't worry if you miss the last boat, catch the ferry to Buiksloterweg - runs every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day. Once over the other side, wait infront of the building directly opposite the landing stage. The Botel shuttle bus will turn up. It's free!

Great Tip! We purchased all our evening meals using Group On Vouchers. I saved a small fortune. We had Thai, Turkish BBQ all-you-can-eat and Indian. I reckon we saved approx £75 GBP on the 3 meals Group On is free to subscribe, just go to there Dutch site and use Google Translate............Easy!

If anyone requires any help with any of the above, please send a message and I will try and answer.

Have a great time, We did! Weather was fantasic for March, sunny ever day.
