Stayed at the Hampshire - Theatre District hotel in Amsterdam for 3 nights in September and were not pleased. While Amsterdam hotel prices on a whole are steep compared with many other major cities, I was extremely surprised to see that this hotel can be considered 3 stars.
We arrived early and were accommodated with an early check in. Our room, 124, was very small, dirty (carpets and the stools by the bed), and old (cracks in the sink and shower). On top of that, the beds are not comfortable as you can literally feel the wiry mesh of the mattress when you sit or sleep. Maybe it was just our room?
Further, we found the front desk staff were unfriendly, unhelpful and quite honestly.. never at the front desk! The front door to the hotel locks at a certain point (23h?) and you are required to buzz back in to the hotel and wait until a (rude) hotel staff member personally opens the door for you.
I understand that European customer service and hospitality standards are not as high as North America. This shouldn't give any hotel the excuse to run themselves as if they are a hostel. I have personally stayed in hostels nicer, and with larger rooms, than this hotel.
For anybody who books with Priceline, keep in mind the hotel charges an additional 5% city tax upon departure.

We have just returned from 3 nights in Amsterdam staying at the Hampshire Hotel in the Theatre District. I think it is worth pointing out that the negative reviews of this hotel are, in my opinion, wide of the mark. The hotel wasn't particularly cheap, but we definitely got our moneys worth. Excluding the well-documented state of the carpets (why can't they clean them?), the rooms were clean, tidy and modern. I was pleasantly surprised by the condition and size of the room based on the reviews that were on here before I booked. The carpets were indeed dirty, but I think that is perhaps down to a poor choice in carpet rather than the carpets not being cleaned. In other hotels they are likely to be covered in stains also, but the carpet's pattern doesn't shown them up. Regardless, the carpets are nothing to worry about. The hotel staff were pleasant and helpful and their English was excellent (as we found everywhere in Amsterdam). Although there was one member of staff who "greeted" us on our first night, who wasn't particularly friendly - but he may have been annoyed at catching someone smoking cannabis in the rooms earlier? One thing to note is if you are thinking about taking a "spliff" back to the room to have a smoke late in the day then don't bother as they have a strict policy of no smoking in the rooms and there's a €150 fine if you are caught! As for the breakfasts there is plenty to choose from; eggs, bacon, toast, croissants etc so there's likely to be enough there for everyone. The location of the hotel is excellent, with it being situated a 2-5 min walk from the Leidseplein, although we heard absolutely zero noise at night and were not put off our sleep at all. I would recommend this hotel to anyone - great location in a nice, comfortable hotel.

My wife and i stayed here and had real trouble sleeping every night due to a combination of massive pillows and the room above the reception. Carpet was a bit shabby but other than this it was a nice hotel with excellent staff.

First of all: This Hotel is as far away from a 3 Star Hotel as (almost) any junk place I had the pleasure to stay at in the past on rare occasions.

First of all when we arrived at the "Hotel" there was no room for us although we had booked and prepaid through Priceline. Well after the experiences we made later I would say that this was a lucky circumstance, as any night less one has to stay there is a gain. We were moved to a OK Hotel of the same chain, far away from the central area we wanted to stay at. That was the Manor Hotel.

The next day we moved back to the Hampshire Theatre District and the room we got - it was room 408 - was bejond anything one could imagine when booking a three star Hotel, even far bejond anything one can imagine when booking any place to stay at for a couple of nights. The room was not just small, it was minuscule. There was a bed that was way too small for two people, even if they are very close as my wife and myself are. I would guess it was about 45 inches wide. It was almost impossible to find sleep, well at the end you have to sleep somehow, but because of that we were tired all through the rest of the trip.

The carpet in the room was absolutely disgusting. It had dark stains all over and looked as if it had not been cleaned for years. There was a small table with an old chair with stained fabric cloth cramped against the wall.

The bathroom was so small one could not turn around without hitting something. There were two soap dispensers, the one beside the tiny basin was empty, the one in the narrow shower fell apart as soon as I tried to get some soap out of it. There was no toilet paper on a roll in the bathroom, just a dispenser with tissues that were much too thin. We had to buy our own toilet paper to fit our hygienic needs.

As I complained with the female desk clerk she said that we would already have gotten a “Superior room”. I was not sure if she was trying to mess around with me. Unfortunately only after two nights in this room I saw two couples checking out from other rooms and I saw that those rooms were larger with at least acceptable accomodations for two people, so now I was sure the clerk HAD messed around. I went to the clerk again – a guy this time – and complained once more, so he finally assigned us another room. That room was still by far no three star Hotel room, but at least it was like a small OK one star Motel room one can spend a night in if necessary. The bed was larger and we were able to find decent sleep the last night of our stay.

If anybody should ever want to check out what I am talking about please go and see room 408. That was the room we had to stay at for two nights. The last night we were moved to so-so 409, a big improvement to 408, but still far away from a decent 3 star Hotel room.

Room Tip: If you absolutely have to stay there avoid 408 at any cost. Probably the rooms under 408 are the sam...

Read an array of good and bad reviews about this hotel. Booked it last minute and very cheap along with equally cheap flights for a two night/three day break with a friend. Hotel was easy to locate and we used the Airport Connect bus (be advised to buy a return ticket - much much cheaper than a single).

Reception were very helpful on arrival and throughout stay - location was excellent for exploring and very near Tourist Information office for buying any City Passes for trams/trains/museums etc.

We found out room perfectly adequate - we hardly spent any time there really - just a base for sleeping. Clean towels and room serviced daily - Shower room clean and water very hot. Enough hanging space for our clothes and a free room safe. Free Coffee and Tea always available in the breakfast room. We didn't book breakfast as there is plenty of choice nearby for breakfasts or all types.

Had a great break - would go back - may even use this hotel again as it was exactly what we needed.

Room Tip: We opted for a room to the rear of the hotel - the view is not inspiring but they are much quieter t...
