“The location of this hotel is excellent...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2010

The location of this hotel is excellent, although it can be quite busy directly outside the hotel during the day.

The staff is friendly, helpful and patient.

The room was clean, pleasant, but nothing spectacular. Comfortable bed.

My only complaint is that the hotel should offer free WiFi. It was the only hotel on my trip to the Netherlands and Belgium that did not and it was rather expensive.

Thank you for your review and feedback. We are aware of the fact that there are other hotels out there that offer free WIFI, but all too often the actual internet costs are passed on to the room rate. I will however definitely bring up your suggestion during our next evaluation on this topic.

Our stay at the hotel was wonderful. The staff was attentive, kind, and spoke English very well. The restaurant and bar were really nice, and the room was clean and spacious. We loved it and will strongly recommend it!

Thank you very much for the nice words and recommending Swissôtel Amsterdam to other travellers. It is very important for a hotel to produce good reviews as people nowadays will check Tripadvisor first before booking a room.

Nice clean rooms and excellent service at affordable price in the heart of Amsterdam. If looking for a hotel in Amsterdam, unless you need a room with a view, this is the hotel you are looking for. An extra plus for free internet access 24/7. Breakfast is rather expensive (20 Euros), but if you go to Deli France 50 m down the road, you get a delicious breakfast at half the price.

When you reserve your breakfast in advance you only pay € 12. Please note that € 20 still is about the average price for breakfast in 4 star Amsterdam hotels and I believe our buffet breakfast has really good price/value. We will of course forgive you for getting your breakfast at Deli France. They do indeed have really nice rolls. Thank you very much for recommending our property and we hope to welcome you back any time soon.

We chose this hotel for its location in the town center and close (10 minutes walking) to the railway station for day trips to other cities. It is also close to the unpleasant (for us) atmosphere of the Damrak and surrounding area, but being at the Dam end of the street you can easily avoid it except to get to/from the train station.
The hotel has some nice features like a Nespresso coffee machine in the room with 2 free daily doses, a free Internet access center with 3 terminals (WiFi at extra cost), and specially the fact that the restaurant is a regular street one. i.e. with "street" prices instead of "hotel" prices.
On the minus side I would mention the needlessly enormous bed that occupied too much room space, the too narrow bathtub and specially its very high edge that makes really difficult (and even dangerous for short or aged people) to get in and out.
But the main disappointment was that our "classic" room was too far from what you can see in the hotel web site: the window was very small and placed in a recessed corner, opening to an also recessed corner at the very bottom of an inner courtyard, so we didn't have any day light at all: we were forced to permanently have the lights on, so after a couple of days we already felt really claustrophobic, but a comment to reception got only a "yes, I understand" and a "I'm really sorry" very polite answer. If I were the hotel manager I would make sure that guests staying 9 nights at my hotel don't get such a cave...
All in all, a good hotel, but only if you manage to get a regular room :-(

Thank you very much for naming the hotel’s assets. I sincerely regret you were not happy with the room you were in and that there obviously was no alternative available whatsoever. Especially since you we’re staying with us for 9 nights this shouldn’t have been possible. I am of course not sure what the reason was in your case, but it is definitely something we need to be more cautious of. Thank you very much for bringing it up. The room you were in is actually popular with people who attach extra value to quiet, since it is at the back of the hotel.
Many thanks for your feedback and hopefully we will be able to welcome you back soon.

The hotel is situated right next to the Dam Square, overlooking some of the square and the Damrak street. Everything we wanted to accomplish on a weekend away in Amsterdam was made possible by the Location of Swissotel Amsterdam. Everything was within walking distance: Museums such as the Anne Frank House, the Red Light district, the shops, restaurants and cafes, etc...
Aside from the great location, the staff really stood out.. from the reservations stage to the time we checked out, the staff were very attentive and courteous. The concierge in particular was great; he took the time to map out every must-see in the city. All his suggestions were exactly what we were looking for during our short time in the city. The room itself was very comfortable, with a nice view of the busy Dam Square. I loved the Nespresso Machine with the complimentary coffee pads! The only slight disappointment of the hotel was the restaurant. The food has a good for the price, but the atmosphere and interior could have been better.
I'll definitely stay at the Swissotel again when I'm back in Amsterdam.

I just returned from a week long stay at Swissotel. The staff are all very friendly and go out of their way to make sure your stay is pleasant. Special thanks to Luigi for trying to help my girls with internet access. You can't beat Swissotel for location. It is a five minute walk to the tour operators and canal boats. There is a grocery store, currency exchange and several restaurants are close by so your choices for dining out are many and varied. I have read complaints about noise, lighting, room size, housekeeping and would like to say that I found the room to be of good size. I was there World Cup weekend and it was loud when you opened the window, but, when the window was closed and the draperies drawn, the room was fairly quiet and no night time light creeps in. You will hear the tram bells if you face the front of the hotel but you get used to it. Housekeeping makes the rounds early so make sure you put out your do no disturb sign and you will be fine. The housekeeping staff is very helpful and always provided us with extra coffee pods etc. when we asked. We had a connecting room with our daughters and it worked out very well. My husband made use of the fitness facility and was satisfied with the equipment, space and 24 hour availablity. We made use of the business centre and found the internet connection quite quick. I would stay here again. I was happy with the fact that you need a room key to access the elevator. I also witnessed staff not allowing visitors to the rooms until it was confirmed that they were expected. Very secure facility. Just ask for what you need and you will find the staff more than willing to get it for you.

Thanks for the flaming review. Very daring to state our staff is even better than our location, because our location already is unbeatable. Thank you for bringing up the security issue. It goes without saying that the safety of our guest is top priority. It only remains for me to say that we look forward to welcoming you back soon.
