“On the DAM”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2011

Modern hotel with good amenities. Location is great, if a little congestion due to the mall traffic. Excellent concierge service especially from Rob C. He made great recommendations matched to our taste, gave good directions and followed up after our experience. down side was a crowded check in area. Brunch at the hotel was a good value, but the DAM PLAZA was a disappoinment. Convenient, yes but not nearly the caliber of the hotel brunch for breakfast, and certainly not as nice and atmospheric as many places in proximity to the hotel.

Room Tip: good location and a fair price for the amenities. Excellent advice on resturants, and concierge ver...

I will pass on your compliments to Rob. He sure is a real gem.

About the restaurant: the Dam Plaza Restaurant, although based in the same building as Swissôtel Amsterdam, is ‘de facto’ not managed by the hotel. We use their dining area for our breakfast. We try our best but at the end of the day we hardly have any influence on the quality of food and service provided by the restaurant, which can be quite frustrating. Luckily Swissôtel Amsterdam is located in an area with a very high density of places to eat, so plenty of alternatives at nearly every street corner.

The best part i liked abt this hotel room was the coffee maker... Some well brewed fresh coffee choices. It also has a business centre wit free internet access. The room was fairly spacious and the location is the best bet u can get for a hotel in the heart of Amsterdam central... Close to trains, trams, restaurants, day trip operators :-) simply fantastic

Simply fantastic is what we want to be. Great to learn you loved our complimentary coffee. We drink the same freshly brewed coffee blends in our offices and don't want anything else ever again. Hope to welcome you back soon.

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights, and got a Deluxe Room initially. The fittings are modern and functional - its location next to Dam Square and being near to the Old Side of Amsterdam (where the red-light districts and numerous eating outlets are) is a plus point.
It also has many trams stopping right in front of its entrance and a 10-15 min walk away from Amsterdam Centraal station, The staff are almost always responsive and willing to help with queries. Kudos to the two hotel managers Albert and Maudy for making our stay memorable.
There was, however, a late development that runied our stay. On our second night we realised that one of our suitcases was broken into. The suitcase was found in a strange position, and the zip was pried open, almost unnoticeably. Some foreign currency was lost (we were lucky that we took all the Euros with us on that particular day). We reported it to the Hotel Manager but he couldn't trace the perpetuator after checking all the room access timings. Since it was highly unlikely that an outsider entered our room without any security access, we assumed that it was probably an inside job (but not jumping to conclusions as to who did it). The perpetuator probably did it many times with other guests without them even noticing that their part of their cash is gone. To the Hotel Manager's credit, he upgraded us to the Junior Suite on the last night and instructed housekeeping not to enter our room. This was the only kink that ruined our otherwise very enjoyable and memorable stay at the hotel.

I was of course informed by my duty managers about the presumed burglary attempt . Needless to say we take this very seriously and are investigating this case thoroughly. We promise to take all necessary measures to avoid any recurrence.

Thank you very much for the kudos. I am genuinely glad you enjoyed your stay after all.

I was placed here by convention staff after closer hotels (Novotel, Acura) were already sold out. This is *not* near the RAI convention center. And the hotel is right above a Burger King and Bar, where people were partying *every* night until 4am, which made my 7:30am meetings unbearable.

On the plus side, the rooms are modern and well decorated. The gym is much better than anything else I've experienced. New equipment, well ventilated. The location is good if you want to be to the heart of the city.

Room Tip: Avoid the x31 room, or any room near the Burger King (you can see if from your window).

Thank you for your review. There is indeed a Burger King at Nieuwendijk (the shopping street right behind the hotel), which closes at 4am during weekends. We almost never experience any trouble by their presence, because the management of the restaurant is very keen on keeping any noise down. When keeping the windows closed and the airco on, most noise will be kept outside. I dare to assume this wasn't the case during your stay. I do apologize for any inconvenience experienced during your stay.
Thank you for the compliments on our fitness. Replacing our old stuff by new Fitness First equipment has indeed been met with general approval.

This hotel is located in a terrific location - right in the heart of the city with transport options galore! We managed to walk from the Central Station (after alighting from the Eurostar) and this only took about 10 minutes. Front Office staff were very inviting. We didn't realise until our arrival, that we had come on Amsterdam's busiest weekend - the Queen's Birthday. Needless to say there were people all over town as the population swelled. The room itself was quite large - almost like a one bedroom condo. It had wooden floorboards with lounges, separate bedroom and large bathroom. The only thing about the bathroom was the open nature of it - with glass panels dividing the bathroom and the bedroom (not very private). All in all, a pleasant hotel and would recommend due to the location.

Queens Day has definitely been the busiest weekend of the year. But also the most fun! I hope you had a chance to enjoy festivities to the max.

You have stayed in either a junior suite or a city view suite. Some of the suites - not all - feature a bathroom with glass panels. You have to admit it looks great. Guests who do not appreciate this extra feature will be granted an alternative of course.

Thank you for the great review. We hope to welcome you back next year.

We stayed here for 3 nights. Hotel location is very close to trams and not far from the Central Station. The rooms were small, we had a room overlooking the "Chinese Massage parlor", but it was quiet, and not overlooking the main street which was noisy until about 1:00 a.m, and then started again around 4:00 a.m. The Hotel staff were wonderful, gave us great suggestions on how to navigate the tram system, and get where we wanted to go in the least amount time.

Room Tip: Do not book a room on the main street unless you can get on one of the higher floors.

Thanks for the lovely review. To avoid any wrong assumptions: the Chinese Massage Parlour actually IS a massage parlour and no cover for anything more notorious.

I am returning home tomorrow after a wonderful city break in Amsterdam made all the more enjoyable by staying at the Swissotel. I am so impressed with the high standard of service provided and the helpful staff that I wanted to write this review before I leave. The hotel could not be more central and the tram stop is in front of the hotel entrance. Reception staff are very knowledgable about activities in the city, and which trams will take you there. The rooms are spotless - fruit and mints left in your room, towels changed daily and also sheets if you wish. All staff are more than courteous and could not do enough to help and I would highly recommend this hotel.
