“Great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2011

The service at the hotel is very good, the staff were great always very attentive and friendly. The hotel was under renovation during my stay but I didn't have any problems with noise or with some protective tape on the elevator.

The room was very spacious and I liked the decoration. The view was beautiful, I could see the Dam Square and the Bijenkorf (shopping mall). They have a coffee machine in their room which was really nice. The bathroom has a shower separated from the tub and it was all very clean. The bed was very confortable and even though my room faced the Dam I didn't think it was noisy or had trouble sleeping.

The location was terrific, only a few minutes from the central station with many tram lines right across the street. Very close to shopping locations, deBijenkorf is across the street and also close to a few streets with shops like Damrak. On the street of the hotel there are a lot of options of restaurants and shops.

What I liked best were the:
1- Location
2- View of the room
3- Staff

What I liked least was that:
1- Breakfeast wasn't included in the price of the hotel.

Room Tip: Definitely ask a room with a view to the street

Thank you very much for the nice review. It’s great to learn you enjoyed your stay so much. I sincerely appreciate that you refuted some claims on alleged outside noise in the rooms, which have surfaced on this platform lately. We invested quite a lot in soundproofing our rooms and it is a real boost to learn these investments obviously pay off.

Kind regards,

This is a relatively noisy hotel as it faces a busy street.
But the main problem is that the hotel is undergoing extensive renovations. I was woken up by builders drilling and hammering. I was planning to do some work in the morning but couldn't do so because of the noise. It was impossible to concentrate. I moved to the restaurant on the ground floor but this was equally noisy as they are also renovating around there.
Room was nice and comfortable but I wouldn't stay again until the work is finished.

For everyone's info: work on the new elevators will be finished this week. Actually it is already perfectly quiet in the hotel, since activities that cause any noise have already stopped some time ago. We have done our utmost to keep nuisance to a minimum by only allowing work to be done during office hours. I do of course sincerely apologize to you and to other guests who have complained lately about noise pollution caused by the renovation. The renewal of the lifts had to be done, first and mainly for the safety of our guests' sake. Thank you very much for coping.

The hotel is a solid C IMO. The location, albeit central is not really charming. Your next-door neighboors are McDs, BKs and money exchange stores.
It is very central and roughly a 10 minute walk from Amsterdam Centraal.
The Hotel looks old like the 80s. Bathrooms need serious renovation: my sink had 3 stain spots like it was used to light out cigarettes.
Adding insult to injury, the hotel is undergoing heavy renovation. Elevator halls are filled with duct tape. I guess this should be mentioned when you´re making reservations.
Next time I´ll try to stay in a hotel close to the Jordaan neighborhood.

Regarding the renovation: Our elevators are being completely renewed. We only allow work being done during office hours in order to limit noise pollution to an absolute minimum. As a result of the renovation the lift frames still have their protective film attached, in order to avoid unnecessary damage. Also the new buttons have been provisionally mounted. I totally agree it doesn’t look really pretty and doesn’t quite add to the feeling of a 4-star hotel experience. But hey, it is just a very small area we’re talking about and by the end of the month we will have two beautiful new guest elevators running.

The hotel just doesn’t mention the renovation on its website, because it is a relatively small operation taking place only during office hours. We do not want to scare off people unnecessarily. If a guests experiences any problem or inconvenience of any kind during his or her stay, we as a hotel would really appreciate the issue being mentioned, so we get the chance to do something about it. At the end of the day our goal is to make sure every guest leaves the hotel satisfied. I do want to offer my apologies for any inconvenience you might have experienced during your stay.

Kind regards,

We chose the Swissotel for a brief stopover in Amsterdam mainly because of its ideal location -- right in the heart of everything. We were not disappointed! The hotel is situated a very short walk from central station and very close to a huge number of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and withing walking distance of pretty much everything you'll want to see in Amsterdam. The hotel itself was clean and the service wonderful. We would definitely stay here again!

I just spent 1 week in this hotel.

Overall its a nice central location with trams connecting to anywhere in front of and behind the hotel.

We were immediately upgraded to a larger room on check in, and this was a good size suite.

The bathrooms are nice with both bathtub and seperate shower.

There is a small nespresso machine in your room so you can make nice coffee.

The breakfast is pretty good especially if you like the German kind of cheese, bread and hams/schinken etc but there is also fruit cereal eggs etc....

the service was freindly and great.

Good price for the internet in your room.

What I didnt like which makes me not want to stay again...

The restaruant serves a terrible terrible meal in the eventing! Just awful preprepared stuff!

The rooms facing the Dam are so noisy 24 hours a day, even with earplugs its a struggle to get to sleep, pity becuase i like the hotel otherwise.

Room Tip: book a long stay! get off a long flight when you!

Thank you very much for the review and the good score. I was slightly surprised about your remarks on the presumed street noise. Yes, Dam Square is a very lively and busy area, but with the double-glaze windows closed and the air-conditioning on you can keep the noise outside. My apologies though for any inconvenience you might have experienced. Same goes for your disappointing restaurant experience, though this one needs a little explanation: Dam Plaza Restaurant, although based in the same building as Swissôtel Amsterdam, is de facto not managed by the hotel. We use their dining area for our breakfast. We try our best but at the end of the day we hardly have any influence on the quality of food and service provided by the restaurant. Luckily Swissôtel Amsterdam is located in an area with a very high density of places to eat, so plenty of alternatives at nearly every street corner.
Please reconsider staying with us again. If the razzle-dazzle of Dam Square is a bit too much for you we gladly offer you a quiet room in the back of the hotel.

Kind regards,

Harold J. Kluit

Stayed here with my wife on our honeymoon. The first room we had had mold on the ceilings, especially in the bathroom, and was dirty overall. We decided to upgrade to the city view suite, which was very nice.

Unfortunately, upon checkout, we found out that the staff had decided not to honor the 20% off deal that was going on at that time, despite the fact that we had stayed there over twice the amount of time required to qualify for it. Swissotel corporate also refused to do anything about it, instead suggesting we contact the hotel again (they did nothing).

The suites here are great, as is the location of the hotel, but I think we'll be staying elsewhere on our next visit to Amsterdam.

Thank you for your comments. Our highest goal is to have every guest leave satisfied and the second highest to welcome them back again, so I am of course sad to learn that you would probably book another hotel for your next stay in Amsterdam. I wish you had not waited to post this review 8 months after your stay, because now it’s a little hard to reconstruct what might have happened. Mould in a hotel room is of course unacceptable and if that really was the case I want to offer my sincere apologies. What happened after the upgrade with your hotel bill is a little unclear to me now and should be investigated together with our front office manager and reservations manager. If you do feel the need for a clear explanation, please do contact us again, because I dislike the fact that you’re now left with an unpleasant aftertaste.

This is a clean and friendly hotel, right in the middle of Amsterdam so it is a really busy area, and quite noisy at night,. We didn't find this a problem as the double glazing is good. Although it seems quite expensive, in comparison to other Amsterdam hotels, it is quite good value. Breakfast was plentiful with both hot and cold options, and served until 11am which is great if you don't want to get up early. I would stay there again.
