“ideal location, friendly staff, all needs met, contributed to trip enjoyment”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2010

Three beautiful, historic canal buildings joined to form hotel, located right on the Singel Canal, the oldest and innermost canal forming the center of Amsterdam. Minutes walk from the central train station connecting to the airport.
All city sights walkable from the hotel. Rooms simple and small, but appropriate for a canal house in Amsterdam - adds to the overall experience. Rooms cleaned daily, without pressure from staff to get out of room so they can clean. Important if you're tired from traveling or sightseeing.
Staff is very friendly and very helpful., and on duty 24/7.
Breakfast is fresh, plentiful. Lots of choices and immediately replenished if running low. Coffee and tea available from staff around the clock.
This is a holel you'll want to come back to, and a great bargain considering the location and friendly staff.

Stayed in a triple room which was clean with comfy beds. Had a view onto the Singel Canal which was nice. Room not very big, but that is a common theme in Amsterdam. Staff were nice and helpful. Continental breakfast was good. Location superb. No issues.

I stayed at this hotel three nights. After the first night, I noticed six bites on my lower back side. I notified the desk and they said that a mosquito must have bitten me. I had left the window open that night, so I let it slide. The second morning brought more bites. I asked them to change the sheets (thinking that would end the problem if it were bedbugs). The third morning I awoke with more bites and a severe, allergic reaction to the bites. I notified the hotel, and again they dismissed my claim.

I suffered on the plane trip back home, and I was suffering so greatly that I had to go to the hospital upon my arrival in Boston. They gave me the absolute diagnosis of bedbug bite and allergic reaction. I sent a letter to the hotel so that they could address the infestation, and I got no response.

I did not know how to check the room for bedbugs, but now I do. If you do not know how to check, certainly avoid this hotel. It is obvious that they do not check... or care!

Dear sir / madame,

After checking this matter with our complete staff we are absolutely sure nobody of our staff has received any complains about the so mentioned "Bed Bugs". Of course we immediately checked all the rooms very carefully as well and nothing was found. If we would find something you are talking about we would immediately shut down the room and solve the problem before we would let any new guests stay in it ! To satisfy all our guests 100% is pretty impossible but we do see purity and hygiene as one of the key aspects of our hotel.

The Singel Hotel is a quirky, conveniently located hotel just 10 minutes walk to Centraal Station. The location is superb, on the canal in a quiet and pretty spot.

We had booked last minute on Booking.com and upon arrival we were given a pretty dark and dank double room at the back on the same floor (avoid room no. 8 - it's a dungeon). We actually wanted something nicer so upgraded to a triple with a canal view which was significantly pricier but thought that we wanted something with some light!

The room itself was a decent size, with large windows for watching the world go by. The bathroom was a bit tired but was clean enough. The bed was comfy and the sheets and pillows were also clean, so all good. The only downfall was the noise from outside and inside - we could hear people chatting in the hallway late at night and cars rattling past on the window - however, we were well prepared and brought some ear plugs (recommended).

Breakfast was a bog standard fare of cold cuts, muesli, eggs and bread. Most mornings they had run out and service was brusque.

Overall a decent hotel but I felt that they didn't worry too much about customer service as they would always get enough custom due to its perfect location and charming building. A bit of a shame, but it wasn't dire enough to put us off booking there again.

A pretty hotel, walking distance from the station, but really not deserving of a three star rating. We arrived too early to check in so the helpful desk clerk allowed us to stow our luggage (but in an unlocked and unregulated store). When we returned to check in a less friendly receptionist was at the desk. A single key for two guests was produced, which had to be returned whenever we left the hotel. When we did request the key we were given the wrong key on one occasion (they just handed it to us without checking our names on the register).

The room itself was very small (which is accepted in Amsterdam) but the bathroom was truly grim. Cracked tiles, dirty grouting and the toilet was really filthy. The decor was bland, with shabby damaged paintwork, both in the rooms and the hallways (though on the second day the walls in the halls were being painted when we returned from breakfast). In our twin bedded room, there was just a single chair and a "desk" - no drawers to unpack into.

No hot drink facilties were available in the room or elsewhere in the hotel. We had a problem with unlocking the mini-safe and the staff member was inclined to blame us for this. The built in hairdryer looked ancient, and became extremely hot in the hand very quickly.

The Singel hotel is located within 10 minutes easy walking distance of central station and other site seeing attractions, three small canal houses converted into this curious dwelling. Having arrived early we were welcomed at reception with coffee even though the room was not quite ready, an excellent start. Our room was clean, comfortable and compact, overlooking the canal which was an added bonus to observe canal life. Breakfast was good quality buffet style continental, eat as much as you like, from early till late. Bathroom was small, a little tired and in need of upgrade, a process being worked through at present. We felt safe and welcome throughout our stay.
