“Wish I could give 6 stars!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2013

This was far and away one of the best hotel experiences I have ever had. The hotel is in a perfect location to walk to all of the sights in the city and sits right on the canal. The property itself is magnificent - from the moment you enter the gorgeous lobby with a huge urn of fresh pink roses and reproductions of famous paintings by Dutch masters you know you are in a 5-star hotel. One end of the lobby has a huge window overlooking the canal and everything is pristine. Even the lobby bathrooms are out of this world. Our room was spectacular with every amenity you could possibly imagine (including free Ipod, softest robes ever, the most comfortable linens and beds, abundant towels, wonderful toiletries, amazing marble bathroom, rainfall shower head, overabundance of closets, etc.) However, what puts this hotel over the top is the staff. They are true professionals and were just the best. The folks at reception, the two wonderful gentlemen at the concierge, Mohammed (the gentlemen who showed us to our room), bellhops, doormen, etc are all best in class! They were friendly and professional and helpful without the least bit of arrogance. Can't imagine a hotel ever having a better staff!

The only downside to this hotel is the restaurant. The food is just mediocre (including breakfast) and the service outside was atrocious! I am not sure why the level of service there is so different from the rest of the hotel.

We did a substantial amount of research to decide on best hotel option for our long-awaited trip to Amsterdam and, honestly, we were overwhelmed and confused. We finally chose this hotel because it was recommended by a good agent that offered a good rate with some bonuses. We were not disappointed.
Our room, up on the top floor of the original hote,l was vast by European standards. Our bathroom was huge and we had windows that opened (always a plus to us).
The staff was extremely good - friendly and accommodating.
The specialty bar came with an award-winning bartendar who took great care of us during our four night stay. If you enjoy sophisticated spirits, give some of his personal creations a try.
Our friends paid a little more than we did and stayed in a lovely suite in the new building. It was lovely.
The location is central to many attractions and restaurants and we took advantage of the hotel's exclusive canal boat and very much enjoyed it.
One downside - the electric system in the sleeping rooms is tricky. Both rooms had crazy systems that caused unnecessary inconvenience. Hard to believe but both members of both couples in both rooms actually spent time, several times a day trying to get the lights on or off - each day of our stay.
Finally, the good service award goes to the doormen who recommended restaurants, mapped walking routes and directed us to attractions. They are outstanding ambassadors - for the hotel and to the city.

Room Tip: If you have the means, opt for a suite in the new building - they are amazing.

The hotel is in an excellent location, on a canal, close walking distance to the Riksmuseum, Anne Frank house, Dam square, the flower market and the red light district. The staff were super friendly. We were stayed in a one bedroom suite that was newly renovated. The views were of a canal, upscale street and square. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. The room was spotless as was the bathroom. There was a digital thermostat and heated bathroom floors with his and her sinks, a tub and shower (with water that was not consistently hot) The hotel was trying hard but sometimes missed the mark. For example, there was an automatic night light in the bathroom. Unfortunately, if you even sat up in bed it would set it off. Also, the decorating was early red light distric- deep red carpeting, red wallpaper, red furniture- all that was missing was the red light. As it was Queen's day the noise outside was very loud. Unfortunately, the windows were not double glazed (such as at the Mandarin Oriental in Munich where you can't hear a thing during Octoberfest even though it is next door to the Hofbrauhaus) so the room was noisy that evening. We ate b-fast, lunch and dinner at the hotel. The food was uniformly mediocre. My wife's ceasar salad was poor as was the cheesburger. The fish was okay. The buffet was fine-nothing special. But, the staff tried hard from the check in people, to the concierge to the restaurant staff. All in all, we were happy with the hotel as it met my 3 most important requisites- location, comfortable bed/pillows and friendly staff.

Room Tip: Choose a view over a canal with a balcony if possible.

This is a palace type hotel with great service. Expect 5 star type service. For example clean daily sleepers will be waiting for you each night. They also have tickets available for most major museums in town.I stayed in a junior suites (see pictures). It is a beautiful room but not exactly my taste. The room might be more cozy without a wall separating the bedroom for the living room. Maybe a couch instead of chairs or maybe different decor (smaller paintings or different wall colors). The bed room has a very high ceiling with a huge painting and red walls it makes you feel a bit in a box. The view from room (136) was excellent with wrap around balconies. I would definitely recommend this hotel but maybe a different room. Location is very good, you are nearly in the middle of things but on a block that is a bit more peaceful and "clean".

Room Tip: If you pick a suite try to pick one without a wall separating the room from the living room and mayb...

We cannot compliment the staff of this hotel enough. The property is outstanding. The location is excellent, but can be noisy because of the proximity to a bustling area.
We arrived on "Queens Day". It is a huge celebration that causes the shutdown of the city center. We were aware of the situation. The hotel advised us of a potential problem getting to the front door. The extraordinary service provided by the staff began with our arrival. Our airport limo dropped us off and was met by a porter from the hotel. The porter took our bags and walked us to the hotel. What a pleasant surprise. Upon arriving we were greeted by a smiling and pleasant check in staff. Although we arrived 4 hours before check in, we were told that a room would be ready shortly. Then we were given complimentary coffee or drinks in a most attractive lobby. When we got to our room, it was great. We overlooked that canal in a tastefully decorated and large room. The bathroom was large and had a heated floor, large tub and seperate showers. We dined in the brasserie on two separate occasions and the food was very good. Breakfast is an excellent buffet or menu. The property is very attractive and impeccably clean. This property is world class and ranks among the best places we have ever stayed. We used the concierge for a few restaurant recommendations and other sight seeing. Everything they did was also excellent. All in all, this was one of our top travel experiences.

Room Tip: Rooms on the canal can be noisy.

We are members of LHW & recently spent 3 days at this property. The staff, amenities and location were very nice. Especially loved the linens and heated floors in baths. Freddy's Bar, had wonderful Martinis! No problem getting around, the hotel has a wonderful location.

Room Tip: It was just my husband and I - we had a beautiful visit. The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum we...

We stayed here for 4 nights and we have mixed feelings about this hotel. Our room was very dark the window was in the corner with draperies that made it difficult to let light in. The wallpaper was in a deep blue so it just made the room darker. The bed was extremely comfortable, we slept very soundly until the pigeons seem to gather on the roof and made quite a racket. It sounded like a whole flock of pigeons were dancing on top of our ceiling. Our bathroom was luxurious with a shower stall and bath. The bath products were wonderful from soap, hand lotion, exfoliant, foot balm, moisturizer, shampoo etc etc. We loved the nespresso coffee maker. We were greeted at the hotel reception by someone offering us an upgrade for an extra 100 euros a night. We said no thank you. What kind of shocked us was the reply from the front desk clerk saying all our clients want this. All! Well does that mean our king size deluxe room was not good enough for their clients? Are all the king size deluxe room empty?

Room Tip: I believe our room was 402 or 432 it has a small corner window and pigeos seem to love the location...

DeLeurope, Manager at De L'Europe Amsterdam, responded to this review, May 12, 2013
Dear guest,

Thank you very much for the kind comments about your recent visit. Your mention about pigeon noise has been addressed and measures have been taken in order to prevent the birds from being able to sit near the window of that particular room. Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience this may have caused.

At De L'Europe, we are very proud of all our recently refurbished accommodations, from our Superior Rooms to Deluxe Suites. On some occasions, the Front Desk is able to offer an upgrade to a room with for example a terrace overlooking the Amstel river, against a reduced surcharge. This is often a welcome gesture to some of our guests however no necessity for a more comfortable experience. Please accept my apologies if it was perceived this way.

Thank you once more for having taken the time to give us your feedback and hopefully we will be able to welcome you back again at some point in the not too distant future.

Kind regards,

Jeroen Bronsveld
