Before going there, and during my stay, I have read and heard a few comments about the size of the rooms. Some people complaining about it. But mine (144, 4th floor), wasn't that small and was very silent. It was clean and confortable. For me the best thing was the breakfast. The hotel is besides Vondelpark and is close to a nice intertainment area. Easy access to Van Gogh Museum. But one small mistake almost spoiled it. I asked the reception for a wake up call, as I had a train to catch very early. Fortunately, I have set up television alarm too. I woke up, thanks to this alarm and took a shower, waiting to see if my ring was going to ring. After that I called reception, as I wanted them to call a taxi for me. Nobody answered. Thirty seconds later the phone rings (13 minutes late), and the guy says "wake up call!". What a joke! I woke up the one who was supposed to wake me up!

Although on first glance this ought to be a good hotel in a great location (park across the street, a few blocks from the 2 great museums), I must admit disappointment in our experience. First, the desk staff seemed distant and perfunctory, then the bar keeper was rude. The bar was usually filled with what seemed to be friends of the hotel staff as both the evening desk staff and the bar keeper were always occupied with them, laughing and carrying on throughout the evening. The constant loud noise filtered into our room requiring us to request that the noise be suppressed. Thankfully, there were 2 sets of double doors between the lobby/bar and the rooms that the staff then closed, which solved the noise problem. The following night I closed both sets of doors myself when we retired to our room. However, the bar keeper opened a door while I was in the lobby checking email on one of the 4 computers available to guests for free (a plus!). I immediately went to him and asked that he close the door and said that the noise from the bar bothered us in our room. His attitude was confrontative - "Well aren't you out here?" "It is hot in here." No apology, no concern for the hotel guests, he went back to party with his friends at the bar. This interaction certainly spoiled what should have been a nicer experience.

Tiny single rooms but the location, service and lobby area more than make up for it. The price represented extraordinary value too, I can't fault the place; if your looking for an inexpensive, reasonably stylish and not too boutiquie hotel experience in the perfect part of Amsterdam, look no further.

Firstly, in Amsterdam terms, this hotel is good value for money. There are many other hotels in the city charging the same or more that are of a far lower all-round standard.

The hotel is pleasantly located in the museum district of the city next to the Vondelpark. You are very close to the Van Gogh museum and the Rijksmuseum. This is a quiet-ish area at the opposite end of the city to the red light district and the associated hordes of young lads on the hunt for beer and more besides. This, in my view at least, is a big positive. It does mean a bit of a tram trip from Centraal Station, but this only takes 10 mins or so, which isn't too bad. You can walk to the centre of the city in 10-15 mins and there are many restaurants and bars close by.

The decor of the hotel is fairly modern and stylish. Our room was bright and clean, with large windows looking out onto the park in front of the hotel - a nice view. We got a great view of sunset each day, which was a bonus. We did not get disturbed by any noise at night, unlike some other reviewers. We did not have breakfast at the hotel, so cannot comment except to say that it seemed fairly expensive, but that's a subjective matter.

The staff were always friendly and helpful and provided maps and advice upon request. There was free internet access in the lobby, but you had to pay (a substantial amount) to get wi-fi in the rooms, which seems a little behind the times.

Overall, we had a very nice stay here, and would recommend the Piet Hein. You could certainly do a lot worse in Amsterdam!

My experience at this hotel was mixed; on the up side, I appreciated the free internet stations (there were 4) in the lobby area, the lovely breakfast and the helpful staff. On the down side, the room I was given was on the older part of the hotel, overlooking the small park in front, which meant that the room itself was rather tatty, and smelt stale. The worst part of this room however, was that there were water pipes running in the room which made loud noises all through the night. Not only that, but being close to the staircase and lift, I could hear corridor traffic all night.
I could see that the other side (back) of the hotel was newly renovated, and had I been given a room on that side, I may have had a better experience like the other reviewers - so watch out for those rooms at the front that are close to the staircase!!
