We checked in at 9.30 am on Saturday, November 4. Room not ready as expected. To fill in time we did a canal cruise. Room was ready after 2 pm. Very basic/no frills/standard room WITH BATH. Very difficult to get out of the room door, just as well no emergency exit required. Reported to front desk for reporting to housekeeping. Still difficult. As you know this Hotel serves 'hot' breakfast only. For our 2 breakfast mornings, we were first into the room. Only hot food was hard boiled egg. The other items were not hot (are they ever?). No prunes, bircher muesli. NO TOASTER. On the Sunday we did a tour and when back at about 3 pm our room still not cleaned. Back downstairs to wait for the housemaid to do room. Left husband resting in the lobby whilst I went for a sightseeing walk. After 4 pm room done and we discovered that milk and soft drink we had placed in an 'ice bucket' on a bench had been removed. Advised reception who told me to let housekeeping know the next morning. Very difficult to obtain ice (they have no ice machine and will only provide a small glass full of ice - we used the rubbish bin as ice bucket). We booked a shuttle to the Airport through the hotel which was handled efficiently. The hotel 'takes all credit cards' but apparently not Amex. We liked the security door system. The bed was a small double with the usual doona/duvet. We had to have window open (noisy Saturday night) and feet/arms out from cover and still too hot to sleep. Also we both had bad problems after 2 nights. Actually when we arrived in Singapore (via Heathrow) we were taken off the 'plane in wheelchairs. Hotel in Singapore had an excellent massage chair which helped a lot in our recovery (will do separate review)

After reading some reports we were unsure of what to expect. We arrived to a very friendly greeting. I had written to ask for a quiet room and was given one on the side but this had been upgraded from a standard twin and was roomy, warm, comfy, spotless and had a well equipped bathroom with a powerful overbath shower and piping hot water. We could still hear the trams and a little street noise but carry ear plugs which dealt with that. The breakfast room is pretty and the food varied and enjoyable. My husband, given to such ways of passing the time noticed that every single light bulb was working in the public areas and there are many. We made use of the safe deposit facility and the suitcase storage as our flight was not till evening on our last day.The dish of love heart sweets on the recepetion were fun too and without exception the staff were pleasant and helpful-and to think I nearly changed my booking.

October 13th, our 2nd weekend away from the kids in 11 years. On the whole NOT BAD! Enjoyed Amsterdam.
Stayed at The Avenue Hotel, great location, walking distance to Central Station. Not too noisy, except for the bell chimes every hour with a rendition of "Onward Christian Soldiers". Hotel a bit quirky, but staff friendly and helpful, though no plug in bathroom sink, why? don't know, and shower not very good. Rooms are quite small but adequate. All you can eat for breakfast if you really want it after a hangover, fry ups, traditional cheeses, hams, rolls, fruit etc., Sent boyfriend down to bar for refreshments but bar closes at midnight. If you are into smoking it's a paradise for you, offered to you constantly, and the sex scene is certainly an eye opener. The live shows and cinemas are more of a laugh than anything, but do go with an open mind.

Having booked this hotel priopr to reading any reviews, was a little bit anxious. So much so we specifically requested a quiet room on the upper floors which they kindly arranged. If you go to city hotels in europe common sence dictates that unless you are willing to pay big money, basically you get what you pay for. However, we found the Avenue to be clean, friendly, great location, excellent breakfast as much as you can eat which really sets you up for the day. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly as were the staff. Yes the rooms were on the small size, but fully equiped. On the main it was no more noisey than any other holiday hotel. Guide me to a holiday hotel where you cannot hear late night revelers returning from a night out! The location was great for all the things that has to been seen and close enough to call back in in the afternoon for a quick refresh and rest. The hotel would benefit from tea and coffee making facilities but as seasoned travelers we never travel without our travel kettle! Easy location to get to from the station, so much so when we asked for a taxi, we were advised that we would be wasting our money! There were roadworks outside and no trams were running along the front of the hotel, which would no doubt add to background noise, but hey, it is a city hotel, in the heart of Amsterdam. If you want peace and quiet go to the country. Would I use it again, yes. It reflected value for money the clientiel were mixed. When we stayed there were no children staying or none that we seen.

We stayed at the Avenue Hotel from 17th to 21st July 2006 in a triple room and i must say i was a little disapointed at the overall hotel. We were put into a tiny room for 3 people right on the front street.....big mistake...VERY noisy....trams sound like they are coming through the room...like a mini eathquake every 5 mins and loads of noise from passing tourists all hours, the foldy out bed was broken in the room aswell. We asked to be moved next day and the staff were a bit off as they said that's what you should expect and it's only to 1am for the trams and they start back at 6am...so 5hours will do anyone wont it...lol. The new room was at the side of hotel (put us in a double superior which was larger than the triple) and was like stoner alley at night....more noise from stoners. Then there was the heat in the Rooms RED hot we had to sleep with wet towels on us to cool down, no air con apart from breakfast room.

In conclusion here are the plus points and minus points to the hotel.....

Plus Points:-

Great Location
Great Breakfast
Very Clean
Opposite an English Pub...lol

Negative Points:-

VERY NOISY
NO AIRCON....Like a furnace in rooms
Stoner Alley to the side of hotel
Staff very off if you make a complaint.

Hope this helps....would have helped us....The renanisance looked really nice when i walked past by the way but never went inside so couldn't really comment.
