“Decent City Centre Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2014

We spent three nights here on a trip to the Netherlands. 10 minutes walk (at most) from Centraal Station and handy for all the major attractions - all within walking distance. Plenty of bars and eating places in the vicinity. The staff were helpful and friendly. The room was adequate and actually quite big for a city centre hotel - room to sit at a table in comfy chairs plus the two beds. The air con was a blessing and worked well, the free Wi-Fi was a bit intermittent. Breakfast was ok, but not brilliant and very regimented - don't risk turning up a little bit late, the partitioning might already be up!! All in all a good base for a walking tour of Amsterdam.

Room Tip: We asked for a quiet room and were at the rear of the hotel, no street noise, only normal hotel nois...

Straight to the point: Business / Pleasure stay

Location - Good, not far from red light, harlemstraat, Dam Square, Coffee shops, damrak, Restaurants etc..
Food - average, continental breakfast, wouldn't do 2 days in a row.
Rooms - Poor, seem to have a lack of cleanliness and hygiene, rooms are crowded, Bathroom was the worst of all. Room slept 4 with 2 in the roof like a bunk bed style, cramped conditions!

Would not stay again. It was ok, as we were a group of four young guys crashing for 2 nights. Would not come with the other half or re-recommend, once was enough.

Myself and my partner stayed from Saturday 26th until Thursday 31st of July. We had a room on the first floor which looked out onto a side street so there wasn't too much street noise which I noticed a lot of people have commented on. The room was basic but very comfortable and most importantly clean! We only experienced very minor problems such as lumpy pillows, no do not disturb sign and the tv channel selection is very limited if your only language is English. However the breakfast was fine, the staff lovely and the hotel is only a two minute walk from central station and close to everything! Would definitely recommend if you're looking for somewhere basic.

I have stayed at The Avenue hotel for more times than I can remember. It is my first choice of hotel when I visit Amsterdam - I go about 4 or 5 times a year for weekend breaks. The hotel is 5 minutes from the train station and close to trams and tourist sites.

The staff are so friendly and helpful (special mention to Sarah and Tessa!) and really make your stay a pleasant experience.

Rooms are not huge, but that's Amsterdam for you, and you shouldn't want to stay in the hotel all day anyway. En suite facilities are small, but clean and sufficient. The breakfast buffet is varied and tasty. The hotel also has air conditioning in the lobby and in the bedrooms, which was a blessing a couple of weeks ago when the temperature was over 30 degrees outside.

For a hotel of this price, in the position it is in and for the quality of the staff, I would highly recommend a stay there.

The stay in the Avenue Hotel was very pleasant

Centrally located very near Central Station and several minutes walk from Dam Square and RLD.

Trams are just outside the hotel.

The room itself was very spacious, nice comfortable bed and shower was very efficient.

No fridge but there was an ice machine which was great to have.

Hotel Receptionist were very professional and helpful

The Breakfast was good. Cooked and cold options were available.

Very good hotel, will happily go back there again

..then things got better after a chat with the extremely helpful chap on the front desk. The (single) room I was given wasn't made up, so I was given another. Seemed very small but actually had everything I needed - apart from the tea making facilities as advertised on their website. The same chap found me a kettle and I could help myself to teabags etc from the vending machine downstairs. My "balcony" door opened straight out onto the street...4 floors up! Was careful not to sleepwalk. The bed was actually in the way of it opening fully, which I was grateful for. Bathroom small but clean and lots of hot water. Breakfast was amazing - lots of choice of hot and cold items. Fantastic position, so all in all, I would recommend as long as you are not expecting a palace. Which you wouldn't get for the very reasonable price charged..

We choose the Avenue as it looked central and we were only going to Amsterdam for the weekend. The hotel was perfect for our trip. When you land at the airport you can catch a train from platform 3 to Central station. You dont leave the airport to get the train. tickets cost 5euro from the yellow machine (they only take coins or cards). trains leave about every 20 minutes and take about 20 minutes to get to central station. the hotel is a five minute walk from the station.

The hotel was in a nice street and we felt safe returning there at night. The rooms were fine. we had a double and were on the 5th floor. There was a hairdryer, towels and shampoo. The free breakfast saved us lots of money. The breakfast, which i think was between 7.30am-10.30am consisted of cereals, yogurts and fruits plus toast, bacon, eggs. It was perfect for us to fill up on before heading out for the day. The hotel has a computer and you can email them your boarding passes and they will print them for you (Flybe didn't have a machine at the airport to print them).

we would go back there again. the red light district was a short walk. I was apprehensive about visiting but it was absolutely packed with tourists, so you just blend in. The pancake boat (which you get a free ferry at the back of central station to get too) was a perfect start to our trip. Eat as many pancakes as you want for 17euro each. we also hired bicycles for 12 euro for 24 hours and cycled around the city and vondalpark. The following day we hired vespa mopeds for 45 euros a day and went to the old town to see the windmills. We only got there by using a satnav on out phone. it took about 45 mins, with two people on each moped. Lovely ride through countryside (no big roads) and once there lots of windmills and shops.

I would recommend this hotel to friends and return there myself. I think we paid about £90 per double room.

Room Tip: we all had rooms on the 5th floor. They were fine. no views but we were out and about anyway.
