“Loved the Ambassade”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2014

3 friends and I spent 3 nights at the Ambassade before a river cruise on the Rhine in late April. We all loved it. Wanted to stay in a place with local ambience, and could not be more pleased. The service was excellent. We arrived well before check in time on a Wednesday morning and they graciously stored our bags while we explored. The bags were in our rooms when we returned. The rooms were lovely. Large bathroom with all the amenities. Very comfortable beds. Wifi worked great throughout the hotel. Lots of personality in the twists and turns in the connecting canal houses. Breakfast is very good and in a lovely dining area. There is also a parlor on the same floor and a beautiful library on the first floor where we had hot chocolate (with a little Bailey's added) one evening. Great location. We walked all over Amsterdam. When we needed directions or a taxi, the staff was most helpful. Loved it!

Room Tip: Our room was in the back of the hotel and was very quiet.

Six of us stayed here April 2013 for a one night stay. From the outside, all you see are old buildings side by side. But, once you go inside, they are all connected to one another!

The structure is old, so staircases are narrow and creaky - a lot of twists and turns in the hallway to navigate through the buildings - but the rooms are bright and the one we stayed in was spacious and faced the canal.

We were three to a room, and the cot provided was comfortable with enough space left to walk around. The bathrooms were clean and well-equipped with toiletries and his & hers sinks.

I would suggest purchasing the breakfast - it had everything you could imagine and more! Smoked salmon, eggs, bacon, deli meats, cheese, fresh fruit, buns, croissants, muffins and other pastries, yogurt, fruit juices, champagne, coffee, tea, etc.

The location was probably the best part of this hotel - you can walk ANYWHERE from here - although Amsterdam is a VERY walkable city.

If you're looking for coffee shops, De Tweede Kamer is just around the corner, nice place, tiny but cool ambience.

Room Tip: Get a room facing the canal! The breakfast is worth the money. Q-Park secure 24hr parking garage 1...

We spent three nights at the Ambassade in late May. I had difficultly choosing between three and four stars for this review, but ultimately I went with four, as it was a very nice hotel. The location is very central and everything is within walking distance (museums, parks, Dam, restaurants). Nonetheless, the line between three and four stars was close, because we did have some issues. Here were the issues we had:

(1) Our room was at street level, facing the canal. The canal/street is very loud until about 11 p.m. at night and you can hear everything in the room. Luckily, it does quiet down quite a bit and stays quiet until around 10 a.m.

(2) Apparently nothing opens in Amsterdam before 9 a.m. On the day we left, our flight left at 11 a.m., meaning we needed to eat breakfast before 9 a.m. The hotel starts serving breakfast at 7 a.m. I have very specific dietary needs, which I explained to the hotel receptionist Saturday night and asked whether they could be accommodated. The receptionist assured me that they could and even wrote down a note. Turns out they could not be accommodated and the only thing I could eat was fruit. I don't mind fruit and wouldn't have cared, except we got charged 17 euros for me to eat a bowl of fruit. I was very upset about being told that my needs could be accommodated when they could not and having to pay a relatively high price for very little food.

(3) We arrived at the hotel around 12 the day we checked in. Our room was not ready. We were told that our room would be ready by 2 and to come back then. We came back at 2 and the room was still not ready. Again, not a big deal, but it was slightly annoying.

That said, the hotel is very well appointed and the room and bathroom were quite nice. Our room was in a separate building than the main areas at the hotel, which meant we had to walk outside if we wanted to go to the other areas of the hotel.

This place is a tasteful mix of tradition and modernity (with a twist of bling-bling) and will appeal to lovers of modern art. Several old buildings have been craftfully combined - the result is unavoidedly quite a maze of corridors and stairs, and you sometimes have to be careful not to bump your head against a low ceiling feature on the upper floors. I would not take our 85y grandma there.
Our family of 3 occupied a family room under a roof, overlooking the canal. The only negative point of the room were two tiny window openings that had been covered with simple plexiglass: they were far from air tight, so the cool wind was blowing in and the night time noise was quite audible. I guess one has to expect some noise anywhere downtown Amsterdam though - don't complain to the hotel, just bring earplugs (or choose a calmer location).
We did not use the restaurant facility so cannot judge that, but the restaurant/lobby/library rooms are worth a visit in any case. The personnel is extremely diplomatic and service oriented.

Stayed here for 3 nights with my wife in May 2014. We arrived late on the first evening and were given a free upgrade to a suite, a nice start!

This hotel is in the perfect spot overlooking the Herengracht canal. The room we had was spacious and spotless with everything you need, safe, hairdryer, mini bar, cable TV on a large plasma and a very large bathroom with twin sinks and shower with bath.

The reception is manned 24/7 as is room service, we used room service a couple of times and it was very reasonable priced (actually cheaper than many of the cafe bars in the neighboring area).

The staff are the friendliest I have ever experienced and I have stayed in the some very nice hotels (5 star) so you don't have to worry about getting a good reception. The dutch are very friendly people.

I could wax lyrical all day about how good our experience but I think the many reviews on this hotel speak for themselves so I wont add anything further other than to say if you are thinking of going to this beautiful city, this is THE HOTEL you should stay at.

Room Tip: Try to get a room overlooking the canal

First... The location is fantastic, right on the Herengracht. Our room had a great canal view... It doesn't get much better than that.

Service was impeccable throughout our stay... Service was always very prompt and friendly.

The room itself was a bit on the small side, but was still entirely adequate.

The bed was very, very comfortable. And the room was very, very clean.

The price was reasonable.

I would not want to stay anywhere else in Amsterdam.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Over the years, the Ambassade Hotel has expanded considerably. Starting with just one canal-side building in 1953, it now has 58 hotel rooms distributed among 10 of these buildings. Eight of these canal-side homes are on the "Herengracht" canal, while two others are located on the "Singel" canal. Other buildings are in use by the Ambassade Hotel too, but for other purposes: a few houses further along the Herengracht is the hotel's Float & Massage Centre known as Koan Float and 150 meters further along the Singel canal you will find the hotel's conference room. Except for the building at 335 Herengracht, all the canal-side buildings are physically interconnected. So as not to unnecessarily damage the original character of these canal-side homes, small sets of stairs and landings can be found at various places in the halls and in some of the rooms themselves to bridge the differences in floor elevations between the buildings. Over the years, two lifts have been installed, making all rooms easily accessible. The canal houses have been carefully restored to maintain their authentic character and all rooms and suites have been stylishly furnished and decorated. The furnishings are predominantly Louis XV/XVI style with the use of colorful fabrics and in all rooms and public areas you will find original paintings by artists from the famous Cobra movement. ... more   less
