“April 17-20”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2014

I choosed this hotel for a special occasion, a surprise trip to Amsterdam with the best hotel in terms of quality, price and location.

I did the right choice.

Quality; Perfect room, nice beds, good service, good minibar (free water).
Roomservice is recommended, especially if you have a canal view- room!

Probably the most romantic and nicest area in Amsterdam.

Price; You get what you pay for.

Location; 5min away from shopping at the 9 streets and Kalverstraat. 5 min away from the Flower Market. 10min away from Anne Franks House. 10min away from the Royal Palace. 15 min away from Rijksmuseum and 15min away from Red Light. We never took the tram or taxi during our stay (expect from and to Schiphol). Many restaurants and bars in the area, Lot of people and bikes, watch your back for bikes when walking during the day/weekends.

Room Tip: Canal view and top floor.

The hotel is placed right in the middle of everything:the Royal Palace, flower market, central Station are all few minutes walk away.It is a very old building which was renovated into a an unique hotel. The breakfast is sensational, the restaurant only offer but the room service is extensive and available 24 hours. Not really needed as the area is full of restaurants, bars and brasseries. The best rooms are the superb junior suites some at the street level from where you can see the water just few meters outside the windows. The reception sells transportation tickets, tours and they call a cab at any time with a 2-3 minutes maximum waiting time.It is on the expensive side but it has a fantastic personality and it will make a dreamy vacation for any occasion

Room Tip: Junior suite at the street level

The staff at the Ambassade were lovely from the second we arrived, suggesting a great steak restaurant for dinner our first night, and chatting to us about our plans for our time in Amsterdam. The hotel could not be in a better location for exploring. Our room was very cute and extremely clean, although annoyingly only accessible via a complicated route with very narrow spiral staircases.

I am not going to contradict any of the accolades given to this fine hotel. Its approach of mixing classic and modern completely appeals to us. My wife and I and our two teenage daughters stayed there last week for a couple of nights. I had booked classic rooms - the entry level, given that we needed two rooms - but don't ask me what they were like, as the hotel upgraded us all to superior/deluxe rooms, both canal-facing! The pictures on the site tell the story, showing the classic decor of the bedrooms. I was suitably impressed in our room (53) when I opened what would once have been a cupboard door to access what I was expecting to be a cupboard-like bathroom only to find a deep, well-proprtioned room that could accommodate a twin sink, modern-style bath and separate rainfall shower cubicle.

It is the service levels that I suspect elevate the hotel even more than the quality of its accommodation, whether that is in person or by email. The hotel reception is just about to be refurbished (we missed it by a week!), and there are plans to install a bar too, so that should improve the offering even more. No restaurant, though a cold buffet and cooked breakfast - with ongoing coffee and tea refills! - is available in an attractive 1st floor room, adjoining the impressive lounge.

Just do not forget though that the hotel is an assembly of canal-side houses from the 17th century, so do not necessarily expect completely modern levels of sound-proofing; but then surely part of the attraction of staying in the old "9 Streets" area is to get some experience of the sights and sounds of life there! Needless to say, the location for wandering to key areas of interest is excellent, and part of the fun is simply walking along the canals.

Heartily recommended.

Room Tip: I can recommend room 53, which we stayed in, with a large bathroom. It is the colour purple, if that...

We have been going to the Ambassade hotel for many years, every time we pass through Europe we try to stop in Amsterdam for a few days to recharge. Staying at this hotel makes you feel like you are living in one of the many old houses that Amsterdam is so well known for. Honestly I go back for 3 main reasons 1 the ambiance, its quiet, chill, the staff is extremely professional, the attention to detail is outstanding, the view of the canals is dreamy. 2 the beds are so soft I feel like i am sleeping on a cloud it is glorious. 3 and very likely the most important Breakfast. The Ambassade Hotel has created a delectable menu consisting of a basket of bread made by angels, cold cuts and a selection of dutch cheeses. Plus there is a menu for eggs, french toast and so on. on top of that they have set out a continental breakfast served with some of the best coffee in Europe. Set in an authentic dining room again (if you lucky to get the table by the window) the view of the canal is mesmerizing.

My partner was left to make the booking for our trip to amsterdam and I must say I was very impressed. Having stayed in Amsterdam 3 times previously this hotel was far by the nicest. The room itself was the biggest ive stayed in the furniture was lovely bed was so very comfortable and very big as requested. Only issue with the room was the lack of a proper shower we only had a hand held over the bath one but not too much of an issue and the under floor heating was a nice touch. We had a quick look at the lounge and the breakfast room with looked very nice indeed however we never ate in the hotel so I ma unable to comment on the standard of food. Yes there were renovations but we were never disturbed by these the hotel staff were very helpful, a taxi booked arrived within minutes overall a lovely hotel and would indeed stay here again however next time we shall be making use of the discount for the koan float centre. Once we gathered our bearings the hotel is around the corner from dam square it just took us a day to figure this out so location is excellent yet far enough out that its very quiet.

Unlike a previous reviewer, we hadn't been warned that renovations were going on, and on our first morning we were woken at 7:00am (6:00 British time) to the sound of drills, sledgehammers and men handling equipment. The hotel was very understanding and changed our room for us, to a higher floor. A waitress in the breakfast room told us that there was some emergency work that needed to be done, and the rest of our stay was quiet.
This is an excellent and well-run hotel; it is well appointed, though it does involve a bit of a labyrinth trying to get about in it (as is is a series of many houses knocked together). The rooms are well-appointed and comfortable. It is not cheap, but it is well worth the expense.
The hotel has an extensive collection of art on display and the clock in the lounge is a beautiful long-case 18th century clock with an animated dial. The hotel also has a library of more than 3,000 presentation volumes signed by authors who have stayed there (many famous ones indeed).
We hope to come back.

Room Tip: While the renovation is going on, try to be well away from it.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Over the years, the Ambassade Hotel has expanded considerably. Starting with just one canal-side building in 1953, it now has 58 hotel rooms distributed among 10 of these buildings. Eight of these canal-side homes are on the "Herengracht" canal, while two others are located on the "Singel" canal. Other buildings are in use by the Ambassade Hotel too, but for other purposes: a few houses further along the Herengracht is the hotel's Float & Massage Centre known as Koan Float and 150 meters further along the Singel canal you will find the hotel's conference room. Except for the building at 335 Herengracht, all the canal-side buildings are physically interconnected. So as not to unnecessarily damage the original character of these canal-side homes, small sets of stairs and landings can be found at various places in the halls and in some of the rooms themselves to bridge the differences in floor elevations between the buildings. Over the years, two lifts have been installed, making all rooms easily accessible. The canal houses have been carefully restored to maintain their authentic character and all rooms and suites have been stylishly furnished and decorated. The furnishings are predominantly Louis XV/XVI style with the use of colorful fabrics and in all rooms and public areas you will find original paintings by artists from the famous Cobra movement. ... more   less
