“My favourite hotel in Amsterdam!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2014

I always enjoy staying at Ambassade in Amsterdam City. Rooms are really nice and comfortable. Great beds. Very clean. Breakfast is great. Service is great. The location of the hotel is perfect. 3 min walk to the tram and in the middle of the Nine Streets. So far my favourite hotel in Amsterdam.

Just to put you in the picture, out of the 12 months in the year I spend on average about three of those months in hotels. I see them all - from the appallingly bad to the really good. I have to say that the Ambassade in Amsterdam is the best of the best. This delightful boutique hotel right is right where you would want you Amsterdam hotel to be - right on fashionable Herengracht. I paid a tad extra for a room with a canal view - well, well worth it. Apart from the fantastic location, awesome interior and decor, as well as the great food - the thing that really stands out for me was the truly delightful staff. They were the most attentive staff I have ever encountered anywhere. In fact, I am going to nail my colours to the mast here - the Hotel Ambassade is the best hotel I have ever stayed in.

Room Tip: We were in room 51 - it was incredible!

My wife and I stayed here in September. It is in a wonderful location with a view of one of the canals, away from the craziness of the town areas. We initially checked into a two-level room with a spiral staircase up to the bedroom. Alas, the afternoon of checking in, my wife fell in one of the canal boats and hurt her knee. After limping back to the hotel, the desk sprang into action, immediately moving us to an accessible room, and then (for the US readers I'm not making this up) called the doctor who made a call to the hotel room. Turns out he was the sports medicine doctor for the Amsterdam hockey team. He did an examination in the room, and ascertained that no visit to the emergency room was necessary., His fee? Added to the hotel bill. By comparison, I doubt one would get service like this anywhere else.

For the rest of our stay the staff was very attentive in running to the chemist, providing ice packs, and taking care of her when I went off to my conference.

Both rooms were luxury rooms. The room service food was quite good and we indulged in croissants every day.

Room Tip: Definitely best to get a room facing the canal.

We stayed here for three nights on a long weekend break before Christmas. As we turned off the busy streets of central Amsterdam into the Herengracht we suddenly realised that we were in the centre of an oasis of tranquility! Our room on two levels overlooking the canal was very comfortable and well appointed. Staff very friendly and polite. Well worth a stay if you are looking for peace and quiet away from the rush!

We stayed three nights at Ambassade in December, our second stay at this charming hotel housed in a row of old canalside mansions. Our comfortable 'superior' room had three big windows overlooking the canal and the bathroom was warm and luxurious. High standards of housekeeping and everything spic and span, The hotel has a cosy library and pretty first floor sitting room though no bar or evening dining. However, there are numerous good restaurants and cafes within easy walking distance and the neighbourhood, in the '9 Streets' is delightful. Reception will find you a restaurant reservation or sell you tickets for the main museums to avoid the queue (well worth it for the packed Rijksmusuem). The young staff were friendly and helpful although a tad overstretched with the hotel very busy. Recommended.

Room Tip: Definitely worth booking a canal view room,

My Husband and I spent 4 nights in the Ambassade hotel , our flight was early and our room was not ready so the manager offered us instead one of the hotel apartments that were one block away, we were pleasantly surprised, the apartment had all the amenities, the hotel staff were always attentive and friendly. The location of the hotel is a walking distance from the DAM square, I must say our stay went perfect, it was a perfect short city break.

Room Tip: Stay at the appartments

Stayed here in Sept 2012. Hotel and staff was excellent. The breakfast/dining areas of the hotel are exceptional. Originally put in a room with two small levels (kind of like a loft area with the bedroom. As we did not like that type/size of room, we were able to be moved the next day to another single level room. Room was still small but relatively normal for European standards

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Over the years, the Ambassade Hotel has expanded considerably. Starting with just one canal-side building in 1953, it now has 58 hotel rooms distributed among 10 of these buildings. Eight of these canal-side homes are on the "Herengracht" canal, while two others are located on the "Singel" canal. Other buildings are in use by the Ambassade Hotel too, but for other purposes: a few houses further along the Herengracht is the hotel's Float & Massage Centre known as Koan Float and 150 meters further along the Singel canal you will find the hotel's conference room. Except for the building at 335 Herengracht, all the canal-side buildings are physically interconnected. So as not to unnecessarily damage the original character of these canal-side homes, small sets of stairs and landings can be found at various places in the halls and in some of the rooms themselves to bridge the differences in floor elevations between the buildings. Over the years, two lifts have been installed, making all rooms easily accessible. The canal houses have been carefully restored to maintain their authentic character and all rooms and suites have been stylishly furnished and decorated. The furnishings are predominantly Louis XV/XVI style with the use of colorful fabrics and in all rooms and public areas you will find original paintings by artists from the famous Cobra movement. ... more   less
