“Very good, with a few minor flaws”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2013

We stayed here for three nights in August 2013; 2 nights mid-month and one night at the end of the month. Both times, our room was facing the Herengracht. Rooms were beautifully appointed and spacious. Breakfast buffet was very good and highly recommended. Staff were courteous and helpful, providing a solid Indonesian restaurant recommendation for rijstafel. Internet speed was good, and when we had problems on one occasion, management assisted immediately. There was a problem with the taxi charge on our first visit but once we pointed this out to management on our second visit, they made it right. There is a small business center where boarding passes and museum tickets can be printed without hassle. The common rooms of the hotel were not only lovely, but exceptionally well decorated. Wish I'd taken the opportunity to take some pictures. Major, but important downside for me were the twin beds on wheels- while pushed together, it was impossible to cuddle at night because the beds pulled apart and thus we did not sleep well. Would be nice if there was a way to anchor the twin beds together to prevent this problem. The hotel is not cheap, but the accommodation was lovely, location superb, and I'd recommend this to others visiting Amsterdam.

The Ambassade was recommended as an example of more traditional accommodation and did not disappoint. Very comfortable, service a little slow but overall very nice. Our lovely room overlooked the Singel Canal.

I was charmed by this hotel's quirky charm and construction as the hotel staff took me to the room through labyrinth, friendly, narrow corridors. And when I opened the door to the hotel room, I fell in love. We stayed in one of the smaller rooms, but it was nonetheless beautiful, elegantly furnished and decorated, and with all the necessary comforts and amenities you'd expect from a good standard hotel. Some might think the beds are too soft, but it was perfectly to my liking, and the double sink in the bathroom was a nice touch.

The breakfast room and food were great, and the room service was also very good. I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful, no matter what time of the day it was or who we contacted. A BIG plus for free wi-fi throughout the hotel.

The only small drawback was the noise coming from passers-by and vehicles in the street outside, as our room was on the first floor. But not much to do about that.

Another plus for the offers to hotel guests to the spa a few houses from the hotel. The massage was really great, and the floating relaxation was something to try!

I loved staying here!

Pros: great bed, nice bathroom, free wifi, beautiful breakfast room and sitting room, great service, perfect location.
Cons: lumpy pillows, slightly worn lobby, no turn-down service. The pros vastly outweigh the cons.

Far exceeded my expectations. The room was large, the AC strong and the bathroom was newly renovated. The location is central to most attractions and transit and is situated along a quite canal perfect for a late night stroll. By far, my best stay in Amsterdam!

Room Tip: Book a canal view room -- be sure to confirm it is not a basement room.

We had two excellent stays at the well located Ambassade. We enjoyed the spacious, elegant rooms, the impeccable service, breakfast and convenient locations. The room decor was especially memorable. The staff was a pleasure to deal with, well informed and gracious. Overall, the Ambassade is a reference for excellent, reliable comfortable lodging in Amsterdam.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a canal view.

What a wonderful stay. Only stayed one night, but wished it was longer.

The hotel is spread out through several canal front buildings, so when we entered our building, we felt like a local going home. We had a small canal front room (61) which we loved. The bed was very comfortable, the air conditioning worked very well, but we really did not need it. Great waterfall shower with handheld wand! We had a small sitting area with two arm chairs and a marble table. The closet had a large safe. Our room was very clean and comfortable. The staff was very helpful and friendly with great recommendations for restaurants.

We would stay here again anytime!

Room Tip: Higher floors probably have less street noise, but with windows closed it was not an issue.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Over the years, the Ambassade Hotel has expanded considerably. Starting with just one canal-side building in 1953, it now has 58 hotel rooms distributed among 10 of these buildings. Eight of these canal-side homes are on the "Herengracht" canal, while two others are located on the "Singel" canal. Other buildings are in use by the Ambassade Hotel too, but for other purposes: a few houses further along the Herengracht is the hotel's Float & Massage Centre known as Koan Float and 150 meters further along the Singel canal you will find the hotel's conference room. Except for the building at 335 Herengracht, all the canal-side buildings are physically interconnected. So as not to unnecessarily damage the original character of these canal-side homes, small sets of stairs and landings can be found at various places in the halls and in some of the rooms themselves to bridge the differences in floor elevations between the buildings. Over the years, two lifts have been installed, making all rooms easily accessible. The canal houses have been carefully restored to maintain their authentic character and all rooms and suites have been stylishly furnished and decorated. The furnishings are predominantly Louis XV/XVI style with the use of colorful fabrics and in all rooms and public areas you will find original paintings by artists from the famous Cobra movement. ... more   less
