“Simply the best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

We spent four nights at the Ambassade Hotel and were very impressed. It is a beautiful, individual hotel. The beds are comfortable and the views overlooking the canals are very special. We had a room on the first floor. High ceilings, elegant furniture, comfortable bed and lovely bathroom. We particularly liked the seating set up of two comfortable chairs by the window overlooking the canal. Just the spot to sit and enjoy tea at the end of a busy sight seeing day. The breakfasts were equal to any we have enjoyed over the years at some of the best hotels in the world. What really sets this hotel apart from others was the efficiency and friendliness of the staff. Nothing was too much trouble. We wouldn't want to stay anywhere else when we go back to Amsterdam.

Room Tip: As for a room overlooking one of the canals

What a place. We got a deal on the room - and then the staff upgraded us to one of their finest rooms in the house. Upgraded also meant up as in the top of the building. We definitely got our exercise. It was a fabulous evening - our last night of the trip and the room had wall to wall windows overlooking the canal. We really appreciated the kindness and help of the staff.

I will make a special effort to stay here the next time I am in Amsterdam - it was simply one of my finest experiences ever, anywhere.

Room Tip: Try to get a canal side room.

Great place to stay. Perfect central location to museums and city attractions. Friendly, accommodating and helpful staff. A description of the hotel would be to call it "understated elegance". Filled with artwork from the owners personal collection, and fresh flower arrangements in every common room. A library filled with books written by authors who were guests in the hotel over the years. The beds are very comfortable, the bathrooms new and state of the art, the rooms impeccable are very pleasant, each room a little different. Highly recommended.

I have been in countless hotels, and this is undoubtly one of the best. Spotless, roomy, well equiped, amazing location (near center but hiding in a complete silence along a quiet canal) and most of all - the most helpful and professional staff (front desk or otherwise) I have ever encountered. Worth every penny!

this hotel is really nice, comfortable beds , rooms quite big, bathroom itself was nice , more like a wet room , shower not so brilliant but ok. No tea making facilities in room, which is quite important for me, but that wouldent stop me going again. The location is excellant , you couldent be more central for everything. Staff were really helpful, we had one problem one day in the dining room, one of the staff told us there were no t bags left and some other items they had run out of, but I .think she couldent be bothered, the manager dident charge us for breakfast that day and was very apologetic, I assume he got it sorted, all in all a lovely place and i will stay there again

Room Tip: ask for one of the 5 egyptian themed rooms, theyre really nice

Amsterdam is nice. Lots of nice places to go and most places can be walked to by staying at the Ambassade Hotel. It has been a hotekl since 1956 and its just wonderful. The hotel is actually in 10 houses. I had my own entrance ecven and a balcony facing the canal. Its very well and stylished furniced with plenty of art in the halls and in every room. Wonderful breakfast with even wild smoked salmon and trout. If you like an omelette, egg or bacon its just to ask. They make uit to just there and then.
The hotel has a library with more then 3000 signed books by the authers who actually durring the years have stayed at the hotel.
I had an intervjue by a journalist and the meeting rooms was occupied. No problem said the man in the reception. We just organize a suite for you. Do you want coffe or tea he said. This is just the way I like it. Friendly atmoshere. One evening I had no plans but just wanted to go out and have some traditional food but I didnt want to go far and I didnt want to spend a great deal on it. No problem look here. The man behind the desk gave me a sheet of paprer with recommendations for everything from "Just the best" to different cusines tio just what I wanted. Good traditional and just around the corner. Super. I will be back

Room Tip: Ask for the room with own entrance. The entrance is just 8 meter from the entrance door to the recep...

The hotel is centrally located in a very quiet, scenic area, with an easy to walk to the sights, restaurants, museums other neighborhoods, & tram, with a nice view outdoors of a canal. As a family of three, we stayed in a split-level canal house connected to the hotel and had plenty of room, with a downstairs living area separate from a large upstairs bedroom. There were big windows that let in the sun, with good curtains for night time sleeping and good beds for a good night's sleep, and a luxurious bathroom. It was all immaculately clean and everyone working there was very pleasant and accommodating.

We stayed in a split-level house connected to the hotel, with a narrow, winding staircase that connects the downstairs to the upstairs. This can be a bit hard to maneuver, especially if you are not used to narrow, winding staircases and need to descend to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, for example, but that's just how these canal houses were built, I suppose.

Tip: There is a very nice coffee shot just a few doors down on the same street (Herengracht 307, I think) where you can have a good breakfast (much cheaper than the hotel's).

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Over the years, the Ambassade Hotel has expanded considerably. Starting with just one canal-side building in 1953, it now has 58 hotel rooms distributed among 10 of these buildings. Eight of these canal-side homes are on the "Herengracht" canal, while two others are located on the "Singel" canal. Other buildings are in use by the Ambassade Hotel too, but for other purposes: a few houses further along the Herengracht is the hotel's Float & Massage Centre known as Koan Float and 150 meters further along the Singel canal you will find the hotel's conference room. Except for the building at 335 Herengracht, all the canal-side buildings are physically interconnected. So as not to unnecessarily damage the original character of these canal-side homes, small sets of stairs and landings can be found at various places in the halls and in some of the rooms themselves to bridge the differences in floor elevations between the buildings. Over the years, two lifts have been installed, making all rooms easily accessible. The canal houses have been carefully restored to maintain their authentic character and all rooms and suites have been stylishly furnished and decorated. The furnishings are predominantly Louis XV/XVI style with the use of colorful fabrics and in all rooms and public areas you will find original paintings by artists from the famous Cobra movement. ... more   less
