“Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

This is a fantastic hotel. The location is central, easy to walk everywhere, charming location on a canal. The building is a beautiful conversion from merchants' houses making it slightly quirky, a boutique hotel not a chain. Best of all is the service. Helpful, friendly, professional, interested. We asked for a quiet room, and got one as silent as could be. The pillows were too big, small ones appeared immediately. The breakfast was fresh and tasty (and two for one), the waiter remembered what we had had the day before, and had a sunny smile. Really, all good.

Room Tip: The quiet room really was quiet. We were two friends and the room with an alcove enabled us to share...

I selected this hotel from online reviews and I was not disappointed. There are a few things that I wished were described better online, but for the most part the overall experience was very nice.

First, the hotel staff was very accommodating and were prompt at answering my emails. This was very important to me since I wanted to feel comfortable with local recommendations as this was my first time in Amsterdam.

The location of the hotel was perfect for me because just around the corner were ample restaurants that served excellent food. Also around the corner were local bars and coffee shops, if you had the desire to inhale.

I came to Amsterdam with my son who turned 16 on this trip. The hotel remembered that fact from a previous email and presented my son with a gift card and chocolates. Very thoughtful and unexpected. Bravo!

The room had two twin beds that were placed side by side, so we did have our own beds but a bit too close for comfort. For example, I rolled over and my arm slapped my son in the head. I thought it was funny, he did not. The beds were very comfortable, but small. The room had a TV, a small desk, and two sitting chairs. With three suitcases, it was tough to walk around the room.

The bathroom was perfect. Heated tile floors, rainfall shower, ample hot water, and deep soaking tub. The bathrooms were well appointed with a towel warmer, and the bathroom was clean and fresh. Soap and shampoo was provided.

The hotel does not have a restaurant or bar but they do have 24 hour room service with a nice menu. Room service requests were delivered promptly.

Breakfast at the hotel was served in a bright, pleasant dining room. The morning food choices was a bit limited on the buffet but you could request eggs, prepared to order. The croissants for amazing and highly recommended. Everyone was presented with a small plate of cold meats and cheeses, and a basket of breads. Buffet included smoked salmon, caprese salad, yogurt, cold cereals, fruit salad, fresh juices, champagne, and some snack toasts and jams.

The WIFi is the hotel is free but it was a challenge finding which hot spots worked the best. There are six hotspots offered for guests, all numbered, and I found that from Room 61, Ambassade Hotel Wifi9 was the fastest. Some of the hotspots were unusable.

So, I would warm active business travelers that have the need to remote desktop work or video conferencing needs, that the WiFi may disappoint; I had good speeds and slow speeds. For emails and general web browsing, the WiFi is fine, once you find the best HotSpot for your room. The rooms offered at CAT-5 network cable but it did not work in Room 61.

The hotel is located on one of the many canals and gives you an old world feel to living in this historic city. A five minute walk will bring you to the busy Dam Square where you can find a lot of activities and shopping. A ten minute walk will tale you to Leidseplain where you can find local clubs offering live music and DJ events as well as dozens of restaurants.

The only two things that I wish were improved were larger beds and a more consistent WiFi network because I work when I travel. Hats off to the hotel staff for being so accommodating and for remembering my Son's birthday.

I will come back again, however next time I might book two rooms, each with a queen bed. Once again, if you want to feel like a welcomed guest, this hotel is for you!

Room Tip: If you have trouble climbing stairs, ask for a room that reduces the number of steps needed to get t...

I organised 4 meetings over 4 days for 18 people who all arrived and departed on different days. From the outset, it was clear that the staff were well-trained, knowledgable and efficient in their handling of matters before, during and after the meetings.

The location on Herengracht is convenient for the centre yet quiet and attractive. The building is quirky, the breakfast and lounge (also used as a meeting room for up to 16) are large and bright and overlook the canal. Drinks are brought to you in the lounge or library as there is no pay bar.

My colleagues were all happy with their rooms, especially the one who had an apartment. I had a deluxe canal view room which had a colourful yet considered design that suited the period features of the building. The bathroom was a joy - modern, large bath, separate shower, twin basins and classy tiles and fixtures throughout.

Food was not memorable but perfectly adequate.

I felt the hotel performed very well overall and offers a great alternative to a business 'chain' hotel.

Booked the hotel due to the good Tripadvisor reviews. We were not disappointed, on arrival the first thing you notice is the perfect location, central and next to one of the canals used by the riverboats. We were met by very friendly staff and given our room key even though we were too early for checking in. One of the doormen carried our bag and took us up to our room. We booked into a family room with a double bed and two single beds in a small side area. The quality of the room has to be seen to be believed, we were very impressed with everything, high quality bedding, towels etc, etc and TV with BBC1.
Was a little disappointed not to be able to book the room including breakfast, at a cost of 17euros per person we were considering taking it in one of the Cafes close by. Anyway we didn't and we were very pleased we chose to take the breakfast on offer in the hotel. The buffet was outstanding with fresh fruits , champagne and the most amazing pastries / pancakes.
Great stay, will not be our last.

I was lucky enough to stay here on a business trip. The staff is the most friendly and helpful I have encountered anywhere. The rooms are beautifully furnished in reproduction 17th Century furniture. Everything isvery clean, and very well designed for creature comforts. The heated floor in the bathroom was my favorite thing. There is a good, fast internet connection with a strong signal. The location is excellent for anyplace you want to go in Amsterdam, and there are many shopping and dining options nearby. Breakfast is also outstanding: eggs to order, smoked fish, fresh breads and pastries, excellent cheeses, meats...oh my. There is a "library" lounge room with a gorgeous tall-case clock and display case of ceramics. Not cheap accommodations, but at the Ambassade you get what you pay for.

Room Tip: This hotel is an assemblage of ten (!) 17th-century touwnhouses, so every room is different. I had a...

I’ve stayed at the Ambassade Hotel for 3 nights during a business congress. From the first moment I’ve stepped into the hotel I was warmly welcomed. The hotel is a fully renovated old house from Amsterdam, next to the “cannal” and really near the city centre.
The neighborhood is very calm and the hotel it’s absolutely outstanding. I was upgraded to a superior room with very nice views. The room had a lot of space, a huge bed and a huge bathroom with both, shower and separate bathtub.
Service at the hotel was flawless, from the reception that was always willing to help and inform, to the breakfast, which was delicious. A full variety of breads, hams, cereals, eggs, all of high quality.
I do recommend this hotel if you are looking a very nice place to stay in Amsterdam.

Excellent hotel in a quiet area right by a canal, but very handy for everywhere you would want to visit. Staff exceptionally helpful and friendly. We had a wonderful room with canal view and balcony. The Koan Float tank experience is very nice, and hotel guests get a discount. If on a leisure trip, we highly recommend the evening dinner cruise with the Blue Boat company - a delightful experience. Also, the Anne Frank House is certainly worth a visit.

Room Tip: Room 15 seems to be the only one with a balcony, although others have canal views too.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Over the years, the Ambassade Hotel has expanded considerably. Starting with just one canal-side building in 1953, it now has 58 hotel rooms distributed among 10 of these buildings. Eight of these canal-side homes are on the "Herengracht" canal, while two others are located on the "Singel" canal. Other buildings are in use by the Ambassade Hotel too, but for other purposes: a few houses further along the Herengracht is the hotel's Float & Massage Centre known as Koan Float and 150 meters further along the Singel canal you will find the hotel's conference room. Except for the building at 335 Herengracht, all the canal-side buildings are physically interconnected. So as not to unnecessarily damage the original character of these canal-side homes, small sets of stairs and landings can be found at various places in the halls and in some of the rooms themselves to bridge the differences in floor elevations between the buildings. Over the years, two lifts have been installed, making all rooms easily accessible. The canal houses have been carefully restored to maintain their authentic character and all rooms and suites have been stylishly furnished and decorated. The furnishings are predominantly Louis XV/XVI style with the use of colorful fabrics and in all rooms and public areas you will find original paintings by artists from the famous Cobra movement. ... more   less
