“Amazing hotel, wonderful staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2011

This is not only a beautiful, picturesque hotel but it is staffed by the friendliest people in the world. The rooms are lovely, clean and spacious and the location is perfect - close to the center but also lovely and quiet. The library and lounge are great places to relax and work.

I stay here when on business in Amsterdam, but would recommend it for anyone over on vacation. It's one of my favorite hotels and I will be back very soon.

I stayed for three nights at the Hotel Ambassade and loved it! The hotel is elegant and relaxing and is well-located on the Herengracht, right near the fascinating Jordaan area and the "9 streets" shopping district. I was very fortunate to have a room overlooking the Herengracht so I was able to watch all the fascinating passing traffic on the canal. The room was beautifully furnished and fitted out and with the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in in any hotel anywhere in the world! I slept so well! Also a lovely bathroom with lots of nice little extras and lots of hot, fluffy towels. Reception staff were very friendly and welcoming, extremely helpful and very professional. (I arrived at the hotel mid-morning after a long flight from Melbourne, Australia and they did everything possible to have my room available as soon as possible - I was very appreciative of this)! I will definitely stay at the Ambassade on my next trip to Amsterdam.

The Ambassade is a collection of canal houses along one of the quieter stretches in the historic canal belt of Amsterdam. The rooms are very comfortable and well-equipped, with fine, spacious bathrooms. Many have good canal views. A real plus for gadget-equipped travelers: There are plenty of outlets. Very comfortable beds.

Service is warm and personal and staff are well-versed in area restaurants. We left an item of clothing in the room, but it was found and returned to us in the US in a matter of days.

It's really a good location: Convenient to restaurants, shopping and sights, yet quiet.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated canal view room.

Just arrived home from an amazing 3 nights!!! Beautiful room overlooking canal, amazing staff - so helpful with every inquiry we presented. Breakfast was just so-so ( except for amazing croissant and smoked salmon) - but who cares when Toos and Roos is right at the corner. Cannot wait to go back!

We stayed here October 22 -23 and loved it! We had a small issue when checking in because our reservation had been for a single guest when it should have been for two guests; they wouldn't honor the price we had booked at, but because of the mix-up, they moved us to a canal view room for our second night. Despite the minor hiccup, both rooms were comfortable and the bathrooms were spacious and clean. Beds were comfortable and fresh fruit and bottled water were provided upon check-in.

What really stood out for us was 1) the excellent location and 2) the superb service. The hotel is on a quiet street that is close to just about everything - good cafes, shopping, museums, the Anne Frank house, etc. The view from the canal front rooms cannot be beat - so beautiful. Everyone at the front desk was friendly and helpful; they made us reservations at local restaurants both nights (Casa di David and Vlaming eten & drinken) which was much appreciated.

We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Amsterdam and we hope to return!

Stayed at this hotel a few times and found it to be just great.. Beautiful rooms, second one was overlooking the canal ...excellent location central Amsterdam.
Good breakfast, though pricey like most of these hotels. But free wifi and charming staff. Highly recommended.
Very comfortable bed too...

Room Tip: go for the more expensive room canal facing...

We stayed at the Ambassade last weekend (Friday 30th Sept.) and couldn't have chosen a better weekend weatherwise and hotel-wise. This is a fantastic, well run establishment. The staff were so helpful and friendly, the room was amazing, wonderful bathroom, fantastic view of the canal, we were on the 2nd floor. Huge double bed which was very comfortable. Someone in a previous review complained about the lack of air-conditioning? Ours worked perfectly well, and it was needed as it was so hot.

The decor in the hotel is truly wonderful, lots of lovely paintings around the hotel, beautiful library, lovely lounge areas, beautiful fabrics. A lot of thought has gone into the design and layout.

Yes the breakfast was really delicious, never had such a wide range of choices and all excellent. Even did a cooked breakfast which is quite unusual for Continental hotels. Well recommended.

We only had two days in Amsterdam and felt that we needed more time. There are so many things to see. We visited the Anne Frank house and museum, a truly inspirational and moving experience. Needed a large handkerchief!!! We visited the Van Gogh museum which is also a must. Unfortunately didn't have time to visit many of the other sights as we really needed more time in order to do them justice.

The canal trip is worth doing, there are various companies that do this but I think they are more or less the same. There is one that does a museum hop on hop off tour which I think must be worth doing - there's a lot of walking to do in Amsterdam and this sort of trip must take the pain out of aching feet! The attractions are not necessarily close to each other, so plan your day before you go out, Amsterdam is bigger than you think!

Beware, if you've never been to Amsterdam before, watch out for bikes and trams. The cyclists seem to have right of way over pedestrians and speed around the city regardless of people! So make sure you watch your step and always look before you step out; watch out for the trams too!

There are plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from, spoilt for choice really. Make sure you try one of the pancake houses, delicious.

Finally, once again, if you are planning a trip to Amsterdam, give the Ambassade a visit, great!

Room Tip: We had a superior deluxe room overlooking the canal. Highly recommend!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Over the years, the Ambassade Hotel has expanded considerably. Starting with just one canal-side building in 1953, it now has 58 hotel rooms distributed among 10 of these buildings. Eight of these canal-side homes are on the "Herengracht" canal, while two others are located on the "Singel" canal. Other buildings are in use by the Ambassade Hotel too, but for other purposes: a few houses further along the Herengracht is the hotel's Float & Massage Centre known as Koan Float and 150 meters further along the Singel canal you will find the hotel's conference room. Except for the building at 335 Herengracht, all the canal-side buildings are physically interconnected. So as not to unnecessarily damage the original character of these canal-side homes, small sets of stairs and landings can be found at various places in the halls and in some of the rooms themselves to bridge the differences in floor elevations between the buildings. Over the years, two lifts have been installed, making all rooms easily accessible. The canal houses have been carefully restored to maintain their authentic character and all rooms and suites have been stylishly furnished and decorated. The furnishings are predominantly Louis XV/XVI style with the use of colorful fabrics and in all rooms and public areas you will find original paintings by artists from the famous Cobra movement. ... more   less
