“Amazingly central”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2011

The challenge for hotels along the Amsterdam canals is maintaining the historic nature of the narrow homes with the needs of a modern hotel. The Ambassade has to make a few compromises in order to keep its exteriors, but we have been coming back year after year and every year there is renovation going on as the hotel expands right through to the next canal. It's hard to beat the location. If you value history and admire brilliant ways to adapt canal residences to make a modern hotel, stay here. The breakfasts are delicious, the public rooms are works of art, and when it comes time to eat out, top restaurants are a block or two away.

Room Tip: A good view of either the front canal (Herrengracht) or back canal is something to ask for.

We arrived early in the morning at about 7am. We knew that was way before check-in time. The staff was great. Everyone was friendly and stored our luggage and showed us to the breakfast room. The food was great. We went out sight-seeing and they had our room ready by noon. The hotel is in a quiet neighborhood and is within easy walking distance to all the attractions, museums and train station. We had a family room with a separate entrance from the rest of the hotel. We loved the room. Again, the staff could not have been nicer and the breakfast every morning was great. Claudia, was our waitress every morning and was so pleasant and nice to chat with each morning. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Stayed in this hotel on Saturday night for a very brief visit to the City.

The staff at reception were exceptionally, kind and help and just couldn't do enough for us. Joost Van Der Kwaak led the charge here and was amazing.

The rooms are divine, very large and beautifully decorated - the most comfortable beds and pillows - we even managed to get a room with a superb view over the canal.

I loved the fact that everything is within walking distance - the museums, flower market etc.

Will definitely go back.

Yes it's a little pricey but well worth every penny!

Room Tip: Book well in advance

Would recommend. Got family room on 3rd floor facing canal. Was perfect for our 5 day stay. Noise from outside has not been a problem, however Today was the very popular 'Gay Pride' canal boat parade and the city is in major party mode. Will expect some revellers later. So glad I chose this hotel as opposed to one nearer Central Station..way to busy, noisy and commercial for my liking..akin to NY streets. Highly recommend 'mike's bike tours' both the City and the Countryside options. Its a short walk from hotel and their bike rentals are cheaper. Breakfast at hotel is expensive although does have decent selection of fare and good service. Staff are pleasant and helpful. A separate concierge would be a good idea as you may find yourself behind a newly arrived visitor who has a slew of questions and just can't wait !!!!. St Nichlauus Boat trip (Boom Chicago) a uique way to travel the canals. The kids enjoyed cycling around the City and the guided tours are the best..as mentioned above.
Overall a great trip..bring lots of Euros you will need them!.

Room Tip: ask for canal view above second floor

This place gives you a true flavour of Amsterdam. I had a recently renovated apartment with canal view. The apartment was on the last floor of one of the houses that forms hotel property. Luckily, they assist you with the luggage, else I do not know how I would have been able to carry my bag up and down the very steep stairs. Will definitely stay again at this hotel when in Amsterdam!

The Dutch have a saying that translates to "I do my best"' said with a shrug, often in response to a service complaint. Hotel Ambassade epitomizes the mindset, both in physical appeal and in service. The hotel room - we scored a canal view, so no complaints there - was poorly laid out, the furnishings were incongruous and well worn and the bathroom, hospital-like impersonal. You can get ok rooms and really bad rooms, there is no good (our friend's got a closet). Common spaces are tight and forbidding with the exception of the breakfast room which was well appointed. It seems like the front desk clerks do it all - take reservations, haul bags, answer complaints, make reservations - no investment in bell staff, concierge and guest service. They do their best but sometimes it is just not good enough. I have stayed at other hotels in Amsterdam and as canal hotels go, they are bad in general The only ones better (and pricier) are likely the Dylan and the Pulitzer. Slim pickings.

Room Tip: Insist on guaranteed canal rooms and get the room size, ideally in writing. Else do not bother

An ideal situation on a peaceful canal. Beautifully appointed, extremely comfortable rooms and excellent breakfast. Staff most efficient and keen to help in any way.
