“great location, nice modern hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2011

We stayed here for 2 nights for our second visit to Amsterdam. We stayed in Museumplein last time so we were looking for an affordable hotel in the same area. Hotel Conscious was the cheapest one in the area at about $170 a night. It is in a great location right by the Museumplein tram stop. Though we walked everywhere and only used the tram for getting here from the airport. Btw if you come from the airport go to Zuid station and then take the #5 tram. It’s much quicker then going to Central Station and less hectic.

We arrived early on a very rainy day and thankfully our room was ready as we were soaked. The main reception lady we encountered was very friendly and helpful at all times. The hotel is very modern and clean. Last time we stayed at an older hotel in a traditional Dutch house. I kinda missed that aspect of it here. The room was very spacious with comfortable bed. In terms of décor I found it funny that one side of the room with the bed was decorated very nicely with “forest” wallpaper and nice tree end tables. Though the other side of the room with the TV was completely white. It’s almost like they forgot to decorate the other side. Even though the hotel is on a main street it is very quiet and the room had big windows which was very nice.

The breakfast was an additional 13.50 euro which we thought was really expensive so we bypassed that. We had breakfast at a really nice bakery around the corner south on Van Baerlestraat at a fraction of the cost.

We rented bikes from the hotel which was really convenient. I believe it was about 7 euro for 3 hours and 13 euro for 24 hours.

For dinner in the area I would recommend Café Pompa for tapas and Café Loetje for great steak and fries.

I had no complaints about Hotel Conscious and I would definitely recommend it. Though if you want to experience a hotel that’s more traditional dutch feeling this isn’t it.

Price was right. Location was great. Staff and room was really good. Very close to Vondelpark and museums. A tram stop is right outside the front door and tram 16 takes you right to Dam Square and Central Station. We chose to park at the Olympic stadium (close by and only 8 euro/day). Again just take tram 16 and it go to the centre. GREAT!

My husband and I cannot speak more highly of our stay at this hotel. We arrived three hours before check in time after a long flight just to see if we could check our bags. The front desk staff said not only do they allow you to check your bags, but our room was in fact ready! Being able to check in early was a godsend because we were so tired. The beds were incredibly comfortable. The room is sparse, but had everything we needed. The neighbourhood is beautiful and so close to several museums (as the name suggests). It was also close to the theatre, which offered student prices, and a wide range of yummy restaurants. Particularly, a pizzeria located in a small square near the hotel. At the end of our long day of exploring the city, we slept soundly in the room, which was very quiet despite being close to a main road. However, we slept too soundly and awoke only half an hour before the check out time. Once again, the front desk staff said not to worry and we were able to check out 15 minutes late. The comfort these kindnesses afforded us was invaluable and set us up for a great stay in Amsterdam. You will not be disappointed with your stay here!

We loved Amsterdam! Booked the family room and found large room with queen bed and single bed - perfect for our needs. Huge windows onto the back garden so it was bright and airy during the day. Simple decor, very clean room and bathroom. It was exactly as described in all the marketing materials. The front desk was very friendly and helpful - they even directed a phone call from friends to us at a restaurant around the corner! Location was perfect - close to museums and walkable to other sights. We chose not to have breakfast at the hotel and - often had a light breakfast at the Opera House across from the hotel. Only criticism was the room lighting - energy saving bulbs which would eventually get bright but the lamp shades were dark brown so there was not much light. We would stay here again and would recommend it to friends.

Very nice hotel with very friendly staff. I was travelling with 3 girl friends so a large room with 3 single beds was very convenient for us. The hotel was close to the Van Gogh museum and close enough to the tram stations. The rooms are clean and we had a pleasant stay. I feel like I got my money's worth.

Service was friendly and accommodating. The staff behind reception were more than happy to give us maps and pinpoint attractions, tram stops etc for us.

The room was excellent. Very spacious, modern minimalist design. The bathroom was clean and modern with organic soap and shampoo available. Towels were clean and soft. The shower looked brand new the only downside was that the shower screen left a gap between the bathtub which allowed water to leak out onto the floor. The room also included a flat screen tv, alarm clock and radio. There was a free to use safe in the room which was handy for storing valuables, we were given a key at check-in.

The location is by the van gogh museum, there is a tram stop outside for tram 16, or around the corner for tram 5 both take you to central station in around 10 minutes.

An organic buffet breakfast was included and was excellent. Scrambled eggs, fried eggs, sausages, various bread, juices, yoghurt's, muesli, fruit, coffee/tea all included.

I'd definitely come back here again!

Room Tip: 4th floor has a bad wi-fi signal

I just spent a few weeks traveling throughout Europe and I must say, this is the best experience I've had with hotels.

We were a group of five, split between two rooms, and we couldn't have asked for better accommodations. From the moment we walked in, the staff was courteous, excited, and anxious to help us. Our rooms were incredibly large and very well kept. The larger of the two rooms, which slept three, was massive. It had a double bed with a separate little annex with a single, and a roomie bathroom.

But what put everything over the top was the service. The staff was always smiling, very talkative, and genuinely interested in helping us make the most of our experience in Amsterdam.

The rates were incredibly fair and I would recommend this place to anyone.
