“DO NOT STAY HERE.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2014

We were warned that there were stairs up to the hotel but the two flights of steep, extremely narrow stairs up to reception are quite dangerous and it is difficult to carry luggage up. A family with cases and young children would find this impossible. We then had to struggle up another two similar flights.

Our room was minute. The beds were narrow with barely two feet between them. We could not have got out of bed at the same time. The reception area smells musty/dirty and the room was grubby with damp patches and filthy chairs. There was no room for the case which we initially put in the bathroom.

There is no air con and the room was stifling even with the window open.

Unable to comment on shower or breakfast as we decided not to stay and found alternative accommodation on Spui ( a very central location) which at an extra £50 between two for two nights was infinitely more superior, clean, airy and welcoming.

An appalling hotel which is extortionately priced for what is little more than a grubby hostel.

Room Tip: Chose an NH hotel. You can't go wrong.Stay clear of Di Ann.

First impressions aren't that great, there is no lift and the stairs are extremely steep, wouldn’t advise if you’re not good with heights or have vertigo! It’s very difficult with a big suitcase. We were placed in a very small room on the top floor, we were quickly moved to a room on the first floor with a great balcony. The rooms are quite small with nothing but a bed, TV (no English channel) and fridge. The bathrooms were grotty and smelly. The beds were reasonably comfortable and they had the bed pillows I've ever had in a hotel. The breakfast was pointless, toast and cold boiled eggs each morning. Although a very nice pancake house underneath the hotel, you must visit! The hotel is in a great place, right next to Dam Square, 1 minutes’ walk to trams/buses. Lots of bars and restaurants around. Coffee shops and shisha bar on the same road. Reasonable prices and staff very attentive. We’d stay here again for a weekend away with friends.

I think compared to other accommodation in a similar location and price range it is okay.

We requested a quiet room and were given one at the top level at the back - and it was nice and quiet. We slept well.

The Netherlands was going through a heat wave when we stayed. We were very glad that a small fan was provided in the room as this prevented us from dying of heat stroke.

We needed to jam the window open with the bin to get it to stay open...haha

The bathroom was adequate...a little cramped and smelly.

The room was probably clean enough...not great.

The bed and pillows we found to be quite comfortable - perhaps they vary from room to room. There was also a fridge in the room which worked well.

The room was extremely small, but adequate for our needs.

The staff were reasonable and quite pleasant.

Location was really good - close to everything, and within an acceptable (for us) walking distance to centraal station. You can also get the tram, but it's only a 15min walk or so.

The breakfast was reasonable as well.

The wifi worked in all areas but was constantly slow - inadequate for skype.

The stairs are very long, narrow and steep. I guess that is something you have to either deal with or decide to stay elsewhere. We are young and don't have much luggage so it was fine.

Hotel has no elevator so if you have bags, good luck. The breakfast was excellent for free.
The bed though was the worst bed in my life.... And I've slept in caves on straw mats! I was in room 414... The matress was single which is fine but of such a ridiculous cheap quality that once you sleep on it the springs promote you rolling off the bed. So the only way to stay on the bed is to use your backs support muscles.... Good luck with that. I had to remove the mattress and wedge in the walk space in order to create a "impossible to fall from " crevice!
For the owner: $20 at any mattress store can solve this problem!!!

This hotel is a bit of a dump frankly but it is very much in the budget category so to be expected. Very steep stairs. Breakfast was decent. Great location - short walk to dam square and a bit further to Centraal. Couple of rooms have balconies which is great if you want to smoke. Good for young people on a budget but don't expect much.
