I booked this hotel after exhaustive research of other hotels in the area and wanted a moderately priced hotel within easy walking distance to the tram & Centraal Station and close to the "nightlife" which the Victoria Park Plaza (VPP) was.
Positives about VPP:
-Across the street from Centraal Station-walking distance even with luggage (a welcome site after a long plane ride from LA via Heathrow)
-Very easy to catch a tram to get around the city.
-Close to Dam Square - walking distance
-Easy access to money exchange places
-Easy checkin and I booked on the Park Plaza website
-Large rooms (some)
-Comfy beds
-Quiet rooms can requested
-Good beer selection in bar
-Nice, friendly staff at counter (easy to get directions to anything)
-Friendly service at the hotel bar
-You can leave your bags with the hotel for no additional charge, but suggest tipping the person when you pick them up.
-Great breakfast buffet in morning (good way to start your day)
-Taxi service always available in front (expensive in AMS!)
-Good rates for class of hotel and I stayed two weekdays and one weekend day (140 euros was my avg rate)
-Lots of bars and restuarants within walking distance
Now the negatives-very few:
-I requested a Non-smoking room but got a smoking room (I really could not tell)
-Little confusing finding my room due offset floors from stairs ( more my fault I guess)
-Long check out line when leaving at checkout time and easy checkout system via tv was down
-Not real close to museums like Van Gogh and Rijks, but easy to jump on a tram.
-Not many non-smoking rooms and they are always full
Some suggestions:
-Ask for an interior room which are much quieter (not a good view but a good night sleep make sup for it)
-Do the easy checkout upon arrival where they mail you the receipt
-If [nonsmoking] room is not ready, ask for comp drink while you wait in the bar till one is.
-I booked a refundable rate so I could check rates online 2 days before my arrival and re-book if they were lower. It turned out they dropped so I booked the lower "Hot Deals" rate on the Park Plaza site, THEN cancelled my original. It save me 70 euros. No guarantee but I was willing to risk it.
WARNING: Pick pockets are all around in Amsterdam. so watch your wallets and purses. Do not carry your passport, just a copy if you must and leave your original in the hotel.
Some must do's while in Amsterdam:
-Go to the Red Light District; it's very safe and fun to stroll around
-Van Gough Museum is a must
-Ride the tram around the city
-Take a canal ride or tour
-Drink some Heineken
-Amsterdam Historical Museum is a very interesting place
NOTE: Get an Amsterdam Visitors Pass which gives you unlimited tram rides and entry into 20-30 museums all over the city. It's 33 euros for one day, 43 for two days, and 53 for three days. Use starts when you first use the e-card at the first museum when the tram pass is stamped on your first ride. Its a good value and you can buy it at the train station before you leave for Centraal Station at the visitors desk.
I would definitely stay here again. Happy travels!
