My fiance and I went there for 4 days. Firstly, it was in the most perfect location. Literally a minutes walk from the station. The check-in was easy, staff friendly and the room was great. It was clean, fairly contemporary and we had a great view over the station and the main roads.

Drinks at the bar were a little pricey, but then most drinks at hotels are. Dining room was lovely and food was nice - didn't eat there all that much to be honest - we wanted to go out and experience the city.

We were close to all the main tourist sights, and everything was walking distance, besides the Van Goch Museum and Rijksmuseum which are a tram ride away. Also, round the corner from the famous Grasshopper Pub, a "brown cafe" with a great vibe, and fairly decent food.

If you are there for at least 3 days, I would recommed getting the ILOVEAMSTERDAM Card. For those who love pasta and pizza, there is a fantastic little italian restaurant just around the corner to the right of the hotel. Brilliant food, atmosphere and service.

Would definitely go back there!

Hotel is perfectly located directly opposite Centraal station & within walking distance of all main tourist areas.
The hotel staff are very friendly & helpful.
Hotel has two excellent bars which are both reasonably priced unlike any London hotel where everything is double that of Local bars.

The slight downer is the fitness centre, which has only one running machine, one cross trainer & one i think slalom sking machine ? also the pool is tiny, the charge for this was i think 13 euro

  • Liked — Location & Good Bars
  • Disliked — Room not ready to check in to until 1630

My wife and I stayed here in May, and had a very positive experience. We got the hotel as a package deal through Hotwire, and as a result I don't know how our pricing compares to the hotel's usual rates. For what we paid, and for what we expected for a city-center hotel coming from the NY metro area ourselves, we were very satisfied with what we found.

The location is fabulous if you are using the train from Schipol - after a 18 hour total travel day it was wonderful to be a 4 minute walk to the hotel from Centraal Station, however if you pack heavy and typically need a luggage cart to haul around your bags, you may have a little trouble. Day trips for two to Leiden (21 euros) or Haarlem (12 euros) are easy with trains leaving about every 15 minutes all day, and the main station for trams to get to any part of the city is about a 500 yd walk from the front door of the hotel. The Jordaan, and Oudezijds (and it's Red-light district) are minutes away by foot and if you bring your walking shoes, the Rijksmuseum and Vondelpark are an easy hike.

The rooms were clean and spacious, the bathrooms were equally clean and boasted a bathtub that even a 6'1" frame could sit in comfortably! The built-in hairdryer looked ancient, but according to my wife it worked just fine, didn't smell like burned hair and dust (like some places we've been) and wasn't any louder than her hand-held one back home. The one negative was that the hotel has a scarcity of queen sized beds. We originally got a room "for 2" with separate beds--not really what we would ever have expected. When I went back to explain the problem the desk clerk told me that the only option was a setup with 2 double-beds pushed together. The beds were comfortable, but make sure that you specify what you want if you desire a shared bed with your partner here!

The view outside the hotel could be wonderful if you like the activity of a city, HOWEVER Amsterdam is putting in a new subway system and the entire roadway area around the hotel is torn up, walled in and under heavy construction. I was told that this project should be done by 2015, but I would assume that construction around the hotel will be done before then. This having been said, neither of us noticed any significant construction noise in our room (granted, we were on the other side of the building...), and getting around was still very easy as they had traffic control workers at every intersection and plenty of access paths through the construction area.

We didn't try the brasserie or restaurant here, mainly because the prices were (at least) double what they were at nearby cafes and restaurants (breakfast was listed as 20 euros p/p versus 7 to 8 euros p/p average at any cafe within a 5 minute walk), but the food smelled good at least and the bar area looked clean, and very fashionable. The clientele seemed to be mostly business people on work trips schmoozing each other or their clients here in the evenings.

The service was friendly and helpful across the board although, depending on which concierge was working, information beyond simple "which tram gets me to ..." questions were not always accurate in their information (ex: our day trip to Haarlem/Keukenhof was a disappointment because he didn't let us know that a bus strike in Haarlem meant there were no bikes to rent there). Overall, we had a good experience and would definitely recommend this hotel to others traveling here.

I have stayed a few times at the Victoria for work meetings, most recently last week. It is an older hotel and an Amsterdam staple. The staff is courteous and helpful. A couple of downsides:

- The cleaning staff failed to remove empty bottles and cans on 2 different occassions from the room. If you don't put them in the trash can, they don't clear them.
- The bathroom had a strong sewage smell every day. Not overpowering, but clearly noticeable.
- The hotel restaurant food was not very good (at lunch and dinner). I spend a lot of time in Amsterdam and typically go to a select group of restaurants and avoid hotel food in general. This hotel reminded me why I do that. We had 2 lunches and a dinner at the hotel and all were sub-par.

My room faced Centraal Station and was a bit noisy, but that is to be expected. If you want a quiet room, you should request that and get something facing away from the station.

To rooms and common areas have WiFi and the connection is average. The price is a bit steep (I think about 15 Euro 24 hours). Eventually, hotels will have to recognize that free WiFi should be a requirement for business travellers.

The fitness center is there, but is nothing special (and confusing to get to if you just try to follow the signs). The pool is so small as to not be worth getting in. I am not sure if there is an extra charge for use, as my company is Dutch and provides access to all amenities as part of our staying there. Better to get your excercise walking around Amsterdam if you have the time.

On the plus side is the location. It is a 3 minute walk from Centraal. Can't beat that, particularly after a redeye flight. Note that there is a LOT of construction going on near the station, so that should be a consideration if noise is a factor. That said, it is no louder than a typical day in New York.

  • Liked — The proximity to Centraal Station, general good location
  • Disliked — The restaurant food, the odor in the bathroom, failure to fully clean the guest room
