“Good Quiet Place in Amsterdam”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2009

The NH Tropen offers a nice quiet place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam. The service was very good and they offer bikes for rental. It is close to the Heineken Experience and our room offered a great view. The only drawback would be that there is no air conditioning which might be bad in the summer months.

Room was elegant and queen bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was spacious but the shower door entrance was a little tight. The elevator and room lights operate by your room key card. Not a big deal and you remember real quick. Laundry available down the hall from front desk and staff are extremely helpful if you need directions, translations, help with pretty much anything.
Our view faced away from downtown but was still nice overhead look at quiet residential neighbourhood and nicely treed Oosterpark. Is located on same premises as TropenMuseum which is definitely worth a visit. Guarded gated grounds make you feel comfortable to park your car and leave it there. Didn't use the breakfast restaurant or bar, but both appeared very nice from walking through. Directly outside the gate is a tram stop which will take you directly through downtown to Ann Frank house in 15 minutes. The hotel offers reasonable bike rentals as well. Across the street exist several side streets with shops, and restaurants mixed among the low rise apartment buildings. A huge market is set up 6 days/wk one block east past among all the shops. Pretty good pricing on food and clothing deals to be had, since this is now near the tourist district.
It may be lacking some amenities, but it had everything we needed, since most of our time was spent touring around town and in the market and coffeeshops, which are also more reasonable in this part of town.

A very nice hotel that doesn't cost so much more than a hostel and it only costs <10 euro to get to centrum with a taxi.

this is a nice hotel which is situated right behind a large city park. There are trams going to the city centre which stop directly infront of it. Staff are very friendly.

I was not sure what to think after reading the other reivews - knew we had a 50/50 chance of a decent hotel. I was pleasantly surprised when we arrived. We were on the 8th floor, check in was quick, the staff were pleasant and our room was clean with modern decor. The hotel is next to the Tropen Museum and a park. There is also a street market nearby. The street tram stop is in front of the hotel and it takes about 20 minutes to walk to the city center. I would stay here again. The bed was comfortable and they have a pillow program where you can select from an assortment of pillows (down, neck pillow, etc.) for premium sleep. I love the fact that there is no carpet in the room - dark laminate floors, which I find more sanitary. There is a great selection of TV stations for different languages if one is stuck in the room. We had a view over the park and it was very quiet. I doubt that this hotel has air conditioning, but it was in the 60s in June, so they didn't need it when we were there. We did have breakfast which had a selection of warm and cold items that included boiled and scrambled eggs, breads, deli meat, cheese, fruit, cereal, pastries, coffee, juice, etc.. Impressed overall. Since we were with a conference, we had a special rate with breakfast. If you choose to eat breakfast there, try to get the price in writing because we were quoted 3 different prices when asking 3 different people - one said 15, another 18 and we ended up paying 19 Euros- this last aspect is actually a strong negative. Also note that the higher up you stay, the more you pay - they don't tell you this when they assign you a room (we did not request the 8th floor), but again we had a special conference rate. I would stay here again and I would go without the breakfast - a roll at a bakery for 1 Euro is good enough for me. Very comfortable, quiet with great service.

Also, I heard that you can request from the front desk access to the computer/internet in the lobby for 15 min free per day. I did read that wireless for 24 hours costs 22 Euros. And if you would like to check out at 2pm rather than 12pm, the charge is 30 Euros I believe.

The rooms are quite nice with an ultra modern flair. The cleaning staff would not pass the white glove test but the front desk staff are very helpful. The breakfast is overpriced if not part of the room package. The Museum cafe restaurant across the street is unexpectedly good. The internet is a bit pricey but it appears to be on par for The Netherlands.

On a long weekend with frieds in Amsterdam we decided to stay in nh Tropen. We never regret this decision. The Hotel is close to a nice Park, affordable no touristic Restaurants and some pubs in a nice area. City Center is in walking Distance ca. 15 Min. A nice walk.
Rooms are big enough and modern equipped. Bathroom and Toilet are seperate but very small. Breakfast is good with everything you need (fresh fruit, eggs, musli, cheese, etc). Staff is very friendly. We were travelling with a two year old Ccild and everybody was helping (e.g. Baby Chair and Baby Bed are no Problem).
Try to get a room in the upper floors with a view and take the Superior rooms they are bigger. Breakfast and free Parking should be included at booking. Otherwise you will have high extracosts. Parking is always a Problem in Amsterdam, too expensive. We would stay in nh Tropen again.
