“Amsterdam in Spring”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2014

We wanted a reasonably priced hotel to use as a base to explore the wonderful city of Amsterdam and selected the Hotel Tropen based on the reviews on Trip Advisor. The Hotel is not the best looking place I have ever stayed but this should not deter you. Located on the Number 9 tram route with a stop literally outside the front door it is a perfect place to access all areas of Amsterdam without the inflated prices inside the ring. In the immediate area around the hotel there is a lovely park, shops, including a supermarket across the road and a brilliant pub directly on the other side of the road selling a wide range of draught beers and excellent food too.
The hotel is deserving of its three stars; helpful staff, all the usual facilities including a bar and a restaurant (although I can't comment on either as we decided to eat and drink out as it was cheaper), internet in the lobby and wireless in the rooms.
Our room was reasonably spacious with an excellent shower and dressing area and a separate loo. The beds were comfortable although the pillows were a little small. We were on the seventh floor and had a great view over the city. The rooms were quiet and well ventilated.
We didn't intend the spend too much time int he hotel and so the usual frills that make a hotel more than just a room and bed for the night didn't matter. All in all, a good place to explore the city.

Room Tip: Ask for a fifth floor plus if you want to enjoy a view over the city. Ask for another pillow too.

Location is a bit out, but pleasant walk to centre, and tram 9 stops outside the hotel
Hotel staff were all young, very nice guys n gals, always smiling and polite
Hotel room on top floors with park view is great!! Our room was 806
Price works out well for the location and value of the room
The rooms are decent sized, basic amenities, plenty of towels included. Cripsy white linen bedsheets..Be aware there is no fridge!
My 2 issues: the bathroom ( mouldy... however they are refurbing them at the moment, so hopefully it will change) and the dust on the heater and the ventillation unit. Deep cleaning is overdue!! Otherwise we had a great couple of nights sleep in the cozy, quiet room.

We won this hotel in a blind, name-your-price bid and we were pleased. We loved the view from the top floor--the pretty park by day and city lights at night. The room was clean and the bed was quite comfortable. As a dust mite allergy sufferer, I appreciated the hardwood floors. Although the hotel was undergoing renovations, we were not disturbed by the process; we were out all day exploring Amsterdam! Just a short, safe walk away from the hotel and we had excellent choices of cafes, restaurants, takeaways, and grocers. The tram stopped directly in front of the hotel; our purchase of unlimited GVB tickets allowed us to hop on and hop off around Amsterdam all day. The absolute best part of our stay was the welcome and treatment we received. The staff was professional, yet warm and friendly. We would definitely choose another stay at the hotel!

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor!

I chose to stay in this hotel on my trip back as I found both the rate and location worth trying. It was not a bad decision and my rating largely is due to what could, in my view, be taken care of quite easily.

I really enjoyed this hotel overall, but there was one perplexing thing: they are currently under renovation and booked us in a room adjacent to where they were doing HEAVY construction.

Why put customers in what seemed like a not very full hotel in a room like that? When the construction began with a bang at 7am sharp, we called the desk to see if they could delay the workers for a few minutes so that we could shower and get out. They were working with very loud tools on the other side of the wall in the bathroom, making it a near deafening experience to shower. Honestly, it sounded like the wall could give way at any second.

The desk couldn't stop the workers, but they did offer to move us (we declined as we were only staying one more day and had to get up quite early), and gave us vouchers for free breakfast for the duration of our stay. That was a very nice gesture. And that's just the thing, the staff at this hotel was BEYOND accommodating and helpful. Kelly was the woman at the desk we spoke to the most, and she was simply wonderful. But why even put us in that room to begin with? Perplexing.

Beyond that, no complaints. Excellent location with a tram right in front of the hotel and a wonderful spot for food and drinks across from that - De Biertuin. Breakfast was solid, rooms clean, generally great neighborhood out of the majority of the tourist bustle. Would easily stay here again.

Hotel pretends to be fully non smoking, but rooms smell like smoke and on the table next to the bed an ashtray with matches was offered !!

Rather remote location from the city center, not much bars and restaurants around

I have not seen tube TVs in Hotels in Europe for a while, usually only when travelling in developing countries, i though flatscreens were standard by now. Poor choice of cable channels

Slept here for one night in the midst of january 2014.
Entrance by car was somewhat difficult due to road construction, parking costs are € 20 a day.
The hotel is old and so are the elevators and the rooms.
When first entering the room i smelt a penetrating body odor, which was quite disgusting. Needed to open the windows a couple of hours to get rid of the smell.
View from the room on higher floors is great.
Bedding is fine, bathroom very small and old, soap and shampoo in good order.
All in all a great location that should appeal to many visitors.
For the price offered i prefer a newer (and cleaner) hotel in the outer circle of Amsterdam.
