When in Amsterdam I usually have business in the Science Park and the NH Tropen is one of the few hotels approximately in that direction. As many reviewers noted, the location is somewhat less convenient relative to city centre attractions (even though there is a tram stop right in front of the hotel). Several decent restaurants (and a very good one - see my review of de Kas) are close by.
The building wins no beauty contest, but this is less bothersome once inside your room. At my most recent visit I had an 8F room with a pretty view. Interior is NH standard furniture, slightly worn out, but not too bad. The toilet is tiny, but separate from the shower which can be a good thing.
The size and price of the rooms have to be related to Amsterdam standards which tend to beat even Paris with respect to tinyness and priceyness. I paid 110 Euro per night including breakfast which must be considered good value in AMS. Hotel prices in AMS vary greatly depending on the season and large events. I would also recommend to book directly via NH's website as it tends to be the cheaper than the search engines.
I could not confirm any of the irregularities with respect to booking and payment reported by others. The staff was polite and professional. I had forgotten toothpaste and was given a complimentary toothbrush set without fuss.
Summary: this is hardly a hotel for your honeymoon, but if the location is right for you, then it can provide good value.
Ask for a room on a higher floor - they have good views.
Rooms facing East are very bright and sun...
