“This used to be a student residence hall”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2012

Right, the building itself is quite old and it is a converted students residence to a hotel
I guess it wasn't all that popular as a student residence why should it be as a hotel.
The rooms feel cramped and the bathrooms could do a nice little renovation.
The location is far away from everything that makes sense (aka civilisation)

I dont recommend this stays if you are on honeymoon, the bed will drifted far away at night and get backaches and headaches as well. And not in town not even near to city centre. Infront of tram station 15€ per ride from city to hotel by taxi. The breakfast yucks!! Bread cheese eggs and hot milk really not a suitable place for amsterdam. Cheer

we flew into amsterdam in may- took the easy, affordable shuttle to the NH Trop. receptionists spoke fluent english, and were very helpful and nice. the rooms are a bit small, but very clean and comfortable, the bed was great and the view was very nice. location is excellent, we spent the day walking around, shopping, and had everything within walking distance. we truly loved it and recomment this hotel highly!!

As a single woman of a certain age I liked the fact I could catch the airport bus straight to the hotel from Schipol for 16 euros so had door to door help with luggage. Then when I arrived I zipped up in a LIFT and found myself in a clean, comfortable room with a magnificient view over Oosterpark where hundreds of people were enjoying an unseasonably hot end to March. The staff were all incredibly helpful and charming which helped make the place a home away from home. Breakfast in the lovely room overlooking the park was more interesting than most other places in Amsterdam. Minuses included the simply dreadful tapas served in the bar area and the wifi room access which is expensive. The computer available near reception must have the worst keyboard in existence. I had to hit it to get a key to work. However, a couple of places over the road from the hotel have free wifi if you buy a drink. There is also a long street with plenty of good basic shops and a daily market. The hotel is near several tram lines, so it easy to get into the city centre in about 10 minutes. However there are plenty of attractions in the area itself, like the Portuguese Jewish Synagogue (now a museum), Tropenmuseum next door, the Artis Zoo in Plantage and best of all the Hermitage Amsterdam on the Amstel River. If you want to experience the REAL Amsterdam this is the area to do it.

Room Tip: Try to get one overlooking the park and go for one above Floor 2 as there is a lift.

I spent four nights at the Tropen in May 2012.
It is in an excellent location - on one side a park and on the other regular and frequent tram service that takes you to the centre of Amsterdam in less than 15 minutes.
The rooms are large, clean and bright. The beds and pillows are very comfortable. The windows open to allow fresh air to enter.
However, there is only a shower in every room - no bath tubs.
The breakfast menu is extensive and far from a minimum Continental breakfast fare that is the norm in many other hotels.
But it is the service that distinguishes the Tropen from other hotels. The staff cannot do enough for you.
Luckily they all speak fluent English and whether at reception or in the bar or at the restaurant incredibly cheerful and helpful. If I get the chance I will definitely stay there again.

The NH hotels are generally very hit and miss, and this was definitely a miss :(

The outside of the hotel is in direct contrast with the beautiful Tropen Museum next door, it really is an awful piece of architecture! Inside, the hotel looks like it was designed for some other purpose, like student accommodation, but certainly not for a hotel. The rooms were on the small side, although having the WC separate from the shower/sink room was quite nice.

The internet is provided by a third party at exorbitant rates, it was actually cheaper for me to turn on roaming on my phone than to use the hotel internet!!

Breakfast was poor, the cooked items were dried out and unappetising looking, the fruit looked old. The rest (breads/sliced cheese etc) was fine, but we didn't enjoy it very much.

All in all, for the price that you pay for an NH, it's not worth it. There are a large number of really nice hotels in Amsterdam, this is not one of them! (incidentally, the NH on Leidseplein is very nice, I have stayed there a number of times, and I love their 'endless Sunday' offer where you can check out at 4pm for free on Sundays.. but the quality of NH hotels has been very inconsistent.

Room Tip: Don't take breakfast here.

This is a chain hotel. Not very exciting but clean and convenient if you need to be in the neighbourhood around the Tropical Museum. It is a high rise building which is a bit of a walk from the centre of Amsterdam. Not particularly charming, but very functional.

Room Tip: Get a high floor to get a view over Amsterdam.
