“Bicycle rental service a +”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2012

The bicycle rental service is definitely a plus. We arrived in Amsterdam by car but the best way to get around Amsterdam is by bicycle, so rent one! You can take the tram for the city center as well, it's very close.

Even though I saw on Booking.com that there is a 20€/day fee for the parking we had it for free, I don't know why, they didn't ask so... :) You won't find free parking in Amsterdam, we searched.

The free internet in public areas also a plus, work's great.

P.S. Visit the Centrale Bibliotheek (the big library), which is near the Amsterdam Centraal station and Nemo Science center, it is the largest public library in Europe.

Room Tip: Higher floors have great views!

Situated just outside the city center, about 25 minutes tram(#9) ride from central station. The tram and bus stop is literally in front of the hotel (Swindenstraat‎ stop). The area is nice and quiet with restaurants, cafe's, grocery store, and a couple bars across the street. An outdoor market and a couple of American fast-food joints are also nearby. Next to hotel is a park/pond on one side and the Tropen museum on the other.

From the outside, the hotel looks like a modern design from the early 80's, outdated and unappealing. There is a gate outside and a keycard required for elevators so it seemed secure, even though the neighborhood appeared safe. The lobby is nothing special, but the front desk staff were very friendly, spoke English well, always greeted us, and were helpful when asked questions.

They do have SMOKING ROOMS available upon request, and the windows open so it doesn't get too smoky. There is wireless internet access in the rooms but a daily charge of around 10euros required( 30 minutes free in lobby upon request).

We actually stayed in two different smoking rooms during our 5 day stay here. Both rooms were quiet, clean, had hairdryer, laptop sized safe, and an instant coffee maker. The first room was smaller, just enough room for two twin beds pushed together and a desk. It wasn't uncomfortable but I wouldn't call it spacious. The shower, closet, and sink was separate from the toilet. There were two problems with this room, first the television didn't work, but more importantly the beds were on wheels which didn't lock in place properly so the bed kept separating. Called front desk, they sent someone to fix within 15 minutes, could not so we switched rooms the following morning.

The second room was larger, and the bathroom was "normal". No bathtub but the shower had hot water and good pressure. The beds firm and comfortable. Plenty of closet space. Had a view of the museum which was pleasant to look at. Overall a good room for a fair price.

The hotel has a restaurant and bar(didn't use), has a secure baggage storeroom with luggage scale, and restrooms in the lobby.

NH hotels are generally known for good service, and Tropen lived up to the reputation. Other than the couple of issues with the first room, the rest of the stay was good. I would probably return here again and recommend it to couples who visit Amsterdam but do not want to be in the middle of the action. Happy travels!

Room Tip: If choosing a smoking room, ask for the rooms WITHOUT separate toilet and shower.

We stayed at the NH Tropen over the weekend so we could see amsterdam , even though its not in the centre of amsterdam it was an easy tram ride which was almost like a mini tour in itself. I have travelled all over the world for business and for leisure and i can't remember ever being in such a freinedy hotel, every last memeber of staff was welcoming and each time you passed one they would always say "good morning/afternoon/evening" the little words that dont cost anything but are most often never used. the \continental breakfast was great lots of choice of meats cheese and scrambled eggs bacon and sausages. This was my first stay in a NH hotel and even though i booked through a friend that works for NH i looked at the normal rate and for amsterdam this hotel was excellent value for money allround.

Stayed in a few kips in Amsterdam in the past, but this little beauty had some good prices online and went for it. Very easy to get to by tram from Centraal. It is in a quite area, not much pubs etc going on, but for that get yourself to the main areas. You will have to tram it,but there is a stop really closeby, or a Taxi rank right outside. We got an amazing room, with windows all around, views over the park and city. Very comfy bed, and they offer a pillow menu. Room had lovely wooden floors and great storage facilities. Reception was professional and curteous, we did not try out food etc.

Would recommend most certainly for middle of the road hotel in the Dam.

it's a good hotel any way, rooms are capacious, staff is really friendly, breakfast is ok, my room had a nice view of the garden beside the hotel but the negative point is that it is really far away from the city center that you can spend at least 30 minutes in the tram to go to the city center attractions

Room Tip: try the upper floors with the garden view

I have stayed in this hotel 4 times and have always enjoyed the efficient check-in and check-out processes and the efficiency. The breakfast which costs a few Euros extra is worth the price. Rooms are clean, have wi-fi access (on payment) and good bathrooms. Overall a pleasant experience every time. I will stay here again.

The one drawback is the time it takes to get there from the airport, unless one is taking a taxi one has to take the train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Central and then a tram to get to the hotel.

Room Tip: If you do not smoke please ask for a non-smoking room.

The hotel looks recently refurbished and the staff is kind, but is a bit distant from the city centre. You do have a tram (9) that stops in front of the hotel and takes you quickly to the inner circle. The hotel provides a very good breakfast (18 euros). The biggest letdown however was the WiFi being charged and with abusive prices (5 euro for half and hour), and the free wifi provided at the lobby is ridiculously capped.

In times where any 10 euro hostel, mc donalds of starbucks provides free wifi it is a shame for an hotel to charge you for it.
