“a good central location - a safe bet...."”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2010

Our stay started well - able to check-in far earlier than we expected (not long after 10am) and get a wash etc after our journey. The hotel is nothing special as a building - but more than adequate for what it is - a hotel ! It is very central - a 10 min walk from Centraal Station or 3 min tram ride. Wherever you go in central Amsterdam the hotel is not far away - usually 15-20 min walk from most of the action. The rooms are clean (we were a party of 7 with 5 rooms between us - one room was a little under par on the cleanliness stakes) and the beds very comfortable indeed. From my own point of view I had a very quiet and confortable nights sleep both nights we stayed. The hotel bar was pleasant and bar staff very friendly - not somewhere to spend a whole night-out, but good for a few pre-city walk drinks etc. and not too expensive. We didn`t eat at the hotel - too many good restaurants within walking distance. Breakfasts can be had at the cafe right next door for 5 or 6 Euros for a full cooked Dutch (or even English if you want) . As for exploring - cross the road in front of the hotel and head-out down the narrow passageway - keep going and you find allsorts - a mini (and tame) Red Light street and then the increasingly elegant streets towards the Jordaan area - all well worth walking through. Veer to the left and you can be around the Anne Frank House in little over 10 mins. Veer to the right and in the same time you are near to the Noodermarkt area - a very good farmers type market with a few nice bars around the area.

Perfect for a short stay in Amsterdam. This hotel is very centrally located, the staff speak good English and are very helpful. The rooms are very comfortable and clean, especially the bed which was huge (super king size) and very comfy. There are numerous cafe's and restaurants within a short walk for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the hotel also has a lovely bar and restaurant. We would definitely stay here again and have already recommended it to a friend. We used the park and ride and the hotel was just a 5 minute walk from Dam Square where our tram stopped.

I booked The Convent for a group of friends pre-cruise and am pleased to say everyone was very pleased with my choice. The hotel has character, staff are friendly and helpful and the location could not be beaten - five minutes walk from the Central Train Station pulling a suitcase is pretty hard to beat. The train from Schipol to Amsterdam is a short, cheap, direct ride. From the Convent we walked everywhere - the Museums, Ann Frank's House, the Redlight District etc. The excellent buffet breakfast, included in the rate is served in a very nice dining room adjoining a cosy bar. Amsterdam is a beautiful city and The Convent a fabulous place to stay to explore it. Sue NZ

Location was excellent for exploring Amsterdam, only a short walk 10-15 minutes from the central railway station. Front of house very professional excellent English. Room was more than adequate. The only down thing on this Hotel was 22 Euros for breakfast.
Next to hotel is cafe with full English and coffee for 7 Euros.

From airport don't bother with Taxi's get a rail ticket from machine (in English) 3.70 euros each person - Train takes 17 minutes and you are in centre of city.

This was a great Hotel to stay in , the beds were very comfortable , the rooms clean and serviced well everyday . The desk staff could have had some more charm but otherwise no complaints . The hotel is in a great location , easy walk to most shops , cafes and sights .

This is a very pleasant centrally situated hotel which is good value & has extremely helpful staff. We were a party of 8 60+ women staying 2 nights. We found the rooms comfortable & suitably appointed. Breakfast is extra so we ate out. The reception staff were unfailingly helpful, patient & good humoured, from phoning restaurants to enquire about bookings, dealing with a potentially lost safety deposit key, not only providing a corkscrew but uncorking a bottle of wine we had bought with us to drink in our room, serving us drinks at 00:30 in the reception area when we came in late after the bar had closed,& dealing with various enquiries about tram numbers, & locations of tourist attractions. They could not have been more pleasant or assisted us better. We’d all thoroughly recommend it.

My opinion of the Convent Hotel is definitely jaded by the size of my room--which was ridiculously small. I reserved a standard room and I was given the opportunity to upgrade upon check-in. However, the standard room was not cheap and I thought it would be sufficient. I was wrong. The room was tiny, barely enough room to walk along the sides of the bed. The walls were slanted, which made the room feel even more claustrophobic. The decor was dated, the closet space was severely limited and there was no drawer space. Therefore, I couldn't even unpack my bags. So, if you're considering staying here, be cognizant of the spatial limitations or upgrade to a larger and more expensive room.

Despite the negatives, the hotel staff is professional and helpful. The hotel is centrally located--close to the train station, the old town and the Dam area. The Concierge/bell hops are especially helpful.

Lastly, my favorite restaurant in Amsterdam was De Belhamel. Great atmosphere/service and the food is outstanding. If you're going on a Friday or Saturday--call ahead for reservations.
