“A classic hotel in the centre of Amsterdam”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2009

This is a fine, upscale hotel near the very centre of Amsterdam.

It's about 100 m from the back of the Oude Kerk and the Magna Plaza. The street and area around the hotel is typical of the centre of Amsterdam. Nothing sordid, but you have to walk around a bit to find the charm. Lots of small restaurants, cafes, bars, etc. A convenience store nearby. (And of course the Albert Heijn near the Magna Plaza.)

The hotel has an impressive exterior. Here is a building with a story. Inside, the lobby is large and comfortable. It feels like a standard 4-star hotel of the kind that businessmen and well-off travellers stay at.

The staff were all friendly, accommodating and helpful. No problems there at all.

The room was surprisingly affordable when we booked it (considering the quality of the hotel) but then perhaps this is because we booked almost 8 months in advance. The room itself was about 25 sq. metres. So not huge, but not small either. By Amsterdam standards, it was as large a room as one could expect for the price we paid. We had enough room for an armchair. The decor was traditional.

The bed was unusually large and comfortable. Lot of pillows, duvet, etc.

The smallish bathroom was fine, but not luxurious. Fusion bath goodies.

The TV wasn't a flat screen TV. There were only a handful of English stations. Fortunately they had the Comedy Channel, with programming mostly in English.

On the weekend that we were there, the internet was free.

The breakfast buffet was 22 euros, but they also have breakfast plates for around 12 euros. The buffet was very nice. It had salmon. I wouldn't call it a large buffet though. For that reason, to me this buffet was not worth 22 euros.

My wife and I have just returned home after spending an excellent 4 day break at The Convent. I have to say that we had an exceptional time and were treated very well by the courteous and ever helpful staff, especially the young lady who checked us in, and Rob who assisted us when we had an enforced room change.
The rooms are a decent size by Amsterdam standards. We were initially given room 204 which is a large classic room overlooking the street. It was a bit noisy into the early hours of the morning with traffic and a few late night revellers outside, but we had asked for a bright and airy room and this fitted the bill.
However on the second day of our stay our shower developed a fault which required attention by a plumber. We had to be moved to an alternative room and were very grateful for what turned out to be a luxurious upgrade to room 250.
This room had far more space and had a marvellous, walk-in rain shower. (The hotel really should have this professionally photographed and shown on their own website - it was that good !).
The bed was enormous, dressed in pristine white sheets and covers, and extremely comfortable.
This room also faced the street and had three, floor to ceiling windows which also made it very bright and airy. However it had also been fitted with double glazing which completely eliminated the outside noise. Result !
If I'm being picky there are two things which I feel the hotel could improve on. First of all the gym cannot, by any stretch of the imagination really be called,.......a gym. It consists of 3 outdated fixed pieces of equipment ;- a cycle. a rowing machine, and an abs machine, none of which were worthwhile for anyone expecting a decent workout.
Secondly, The Windsor Bar ! This Bar is a wonderfully themed spot to enjoy a few drinks either before heading out for the evening, or for a night cap on the return.
It is lovely inside and should really be the first stop for the captive audience, ( the hotel guests!).
Unfortunately though, the pricing is a bit steep which appears to have the result of encouraging the guests to look for alternatives elsewhere. We had a nightcap in The Windsor on our first night. The bar was surprisingly empty when we arrived. However when we paid just under 11 euros for a small glass of wine and a small glass of beer we worked out why. This bar is one of the nicest and most luxurious we were in during our stay, and deserves to be full with a thriving guest community. And it would be if the drinks prices were a bit more competitive.
A bit of fine tuning here and the Bar would be full every night and profits would be up.
Having said that, neither of these points were a real issue for us. Everything else about the hotel was abosolutely first class.
We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking to experience the finer things that Amsterdam has to offer.

Just returned from a great stay at this hotel. Had a large quiet room on the fifth floor (room 508).
Location was perfect, 10 minutes walk from Centraal station and 5 minutes from main shopping street and 10 minutes from Red Light District and Dam Square. Plenty of cafes and bars in the immediate vicinity. If you like Chineas food then do try the 'Wok to Walk' takeaway just around the corner from the hotel.
I can confirm that the beds are as comfortable as mentioned in previous reviews.
I will not go far wromg with this hotel.

Tip: When attempting to locate the hotel from the station look out for the Bellvue Hotel. The Convent is a 5 minute walk further down the street.

Myself & 4 girlfriends stayed at the Convent for a birthday trip. Staying here made my Amsterdam experience all the better. It was clean, friendly, very central & all the special sofitel beds were the best I have ever slept in.This is definitely one of the more up market hotels but at a very cheap rate. There was not one bad thing I could say about it. I would definitely stay in this hotel again & would reccommend to anyone.

This hotel is about 10 min easy walk from Amsterdam Centraal Station. Otherwise everything else is average to a 4 star hotel.
A bike rental just next the hotel in the side street. Save us lots walk in Amsterdam. But their bikes are VERY OLD! Few block away has 'Yellow Bike' rental if you don't mind 'looking out standing' in Amsterdam.
