“Great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2013

We stayed for 8 nights in this hotel. We chose it based on the location and it worked out very well. short walk to the main station and right next to the shopping areas. Good base to have for a short or longer stay.
The room was a little tired with decor and furniture needing upgrading.
The breakfast was good but the service was slow and no one seemed to want to let you have a menu!
Would stay again based on location.

We've stayed at the Convent three times and have found it a comfortable hotel in a Central area, with good access to all major attractions. The staff tend to leave you alone, and only really speak when you are checking in or out. It's nothing to shout about, the rooms are comfortable, and are of quite a decent standard, but there are better hotels in the area for a similar price. Plus the cost of breakfast there is extortionate. I would go back, but only if the Crowne Plaza was fully booked.

Room Tip: Try to get a room away from the lifts

Oh dear, what a huge disappointment this hotel was. I had just spent two days at the Accor groups other hotel the Mercure Arthur Fromer which cost me half the rate of the convent but was so much better in all departments.
I had paid over 500 Euro for two nights in advance supposedly a special offer rate. My first room was a tiny attic room on the 5th floor which had no safe and no minbar. When I called about the lack of safe I was told this was the case with all rooms and I could leave valuables behind reception ??? It has been over a decade since all self respecting hotels have provided an in-room safe - very poor indeed. When I was unable to find the fridge/minibar I called again. "What do you want from the minibar ?" asked the girl at reception "I would like a fridge to keep drinks cold it is very warm and for over 200 euro per night I expect a fridge at the very least!" after a few moments she was back on curtly offering me a change of room.
I was most unimpressed with her attitude and felt like I was being treated as a nuisance rather than the hotel addressing what I view as a very reasonable request.
My second room was on the third floor. It looked out into a lightwell (buildings on all sides) and was again a very cramped queen size. It had an adjoining door (which proved to be very poor sound insulation) and again no safe but a small minibar type fridge. The bathroom was small but tired with a stained toilet and grimy bath and sink edgings and a malfunctioning shower guard on the bath. The overall decor was dark, dingy and generally tired. On the plus side the bathroom cosmetics were nice and a bathrobe was provided but everything else had a distinctly low rent cramped feel. The bed was however comfortable and clean.
The soundproofing was appalling, noise from the corridor and adjoining rooms was intrusive.
The breakfast was OK but nothing great, rubbery scrambled eggs and frazzled greasy bacon but proper orange juice and nice pastries and breads.
The location is excellent being just a few minutes walk from Dam square central station and many restaurants and shopping opportunities.
My primary issue is that the hotel is pretending to be something it most definitely is not, it is an adequate 3 star but that is it. It is not a 200+ euro a night luxury hotel. I will never go back as I thought it was very poor value and unhelpful service and will prefer the Mercure Arthur Fromer or my more usual Radisson Blu over this hotel for my next stay.

I travelled with my boyfriend, my sister and her fiance and we all agreed on the fact that we couldn`t have chosen a better hotel. This was our first time to Amsterdam and as we only had 3 days to fit everything in, we wanted to pick a hotel in the middle of things! I am so glad I chose to book us in to the Convent. The hotel is in a fantastic location just off of the main street from Centraal Station. We arrived at midday and were able to check in immediately which is always a plus after travelling! The lady who checked us in (I didn`t get her name) was extremely friendly, professional and advised us of places to go and places to avoid. We also had a late night flight home and was able to leave our luggage at the hotel after check out. The rooms had everything we needed for our stay and the beds were so so comfortable! As others have stated, the rooms were very hot but this may be because it was so hot outside this weekend too! We walked everywhere from the hotel, to Nemo (the Science Museum) and to Vondelpark, both lovely walks although mind out for the bikes and trams - took a while to adjust! The red light district is only a 5-10 minute walk also. I really enjoyed Amsterdam and will definately return in the future and back to the Convent Hotel for sure! Thank you for a very welcoming stay, we will certainly recommend!

Great location. Worth the money. A decent hotel in Amsterdam located within walking distance to the Dam Square, the Centraal, the Jordaan, Singelgracht, Prinsengracht, and the Red Light District. Tram stops very near to the hotel, giving you access to the whole city of Amsterdam.
