Booked the Sofitel Amsterdam for four nights through the Sofitel website. When we first arrived at the hotel my partner's comment was 'hmmm it doesn't look like a Sofitel'. Herein lies the only problem I have with this hotel.
The location is good within easy walking distance of the central station and Dam Square and a short walk to the most beautiful parts of the city around the Singel canal. In addition the hotel is located opposite the tram stop so easy access to the museums too. Generally the hotel is in a pleasant enough location to avoid the seedier side of Amsterdam and close enough to major attractions.
Our room was spacious, clean and had three big windows looking out onto the main street but was suitably sound proofed. A comfortable night's sleep was ensured by the very comfortable bed.
The styling of the room, however, is somewhat dated with mahogany furniture and brass lamps and the bathrooms look rather tired. Generally the rooms do not exude the French flair and luxury that is such an important component of the Sofitel brand. There is no turndown service in the evening and only one bathrobe and slippers for two people.
In summary, the hotel is perfectly comfortable, enjoys excellent service, good food and is 'pleasantly' appointed and I would recommend it. However for the price charged I would expect just a dash more 'luxury'.
