“Excellent Location!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012

For one night in Amsterdam, I needed something very central so that I could maximize my time - the Convent Hotel was just the ticket. I could walk to this property from Central Station with ease and that was carrying my luggage!

Check-in was a little slow, but the staff were polite. I found the room to be a little on the dark side, even when turning on all the lights, and I do agree with past reviews about the bed that's raised in the middle and makes you feel like you're rolling off the side, but in spite of those little details, I really have no complaints. The room was a good size and included all of the ammenites that you would expect in a hotel of this class; tea and coffee making facilities, English speaking channels on the tv, nice toiletries etc. I particularly liked the blue-tiled feature on the bathroom wall - it was a nice local touch.

When walking outside of the hotel, you will find that it's less than a 5 minute walk from Dam Square, and there are plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. Should you be looking for a good restaurant, I recommend Ponte Vecchio across the street towards Dam Square a bit - it was fabulous.

This is a very nice hotel. Any criticisms I might make are more reflective of my taste rather than the hotel itself. There's not enough room to unpack clothes or to place all the tech or business things and what not's that we seem to have to bring with us, but this has been the case in most european hotels I've stayed.

The location is great--yes, you can walk your rolling bags down the street from the train station (cross the street near the Ibis Hotel and the huge parking lots/levels for bikes).

The best thing about this hotel? The wifi is excellent!!!! And it's free. If you have to do some work at least a portion of your day, as I do, this factor alone often emerges as the most important for me. And the free wi-fi is great here.

The hotel staff are very helpful.

Tips: across the street is a little bar that has a "Happy Hour." Yes, just one hour. If you're around, catch it. Also across the street, go through the little alley by the aforementioned bar through to the next little street through to the canal. At the corner there's a little store selling trinkets of dictators and totalitarianism. Turn left, a half block away is a nice little cafe for breakfast and lunch (Greenwood) that I found w/Yelp's help. It's good, and it's crowded every time I walk past. Another half block down are two cafes set up on a canal bridge.

I stay here every couple of years, and it has not dropped in quality since it became MGallery rather than Sofitel. What I really love is the combination of being right in the centre of town, and still having incredibly quiet rooms. The window of my room faced on some kind of quiet pathway, and there was a big tree obscuring the view; very romantic. The breakfast is expensive but very good. My only suggestion: there should be a safe in the room. I locked things in my suitcase for peace of mind, though this was probably unnecessary: you need a key card to use the lift and the hotel did feel very safe.

Great place to stay, a bit expensive but worth every penny.

The breakfast was also pretty awesome, the orange/strawberry juice was just fantastic. Pastries were good and bacon was overcooked and crunchy. Highly recommend taking the breakfast.

The beds were comfortable and impeccably clean and rooms spacious for a hotel in Amsterdam.

Only downside is that i specially asked for a smoking room and later was surprised the find that the entire hotel was nonsmoking.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view, ours simply looked onto other windows inside.

Stayed for one evening at the convent in amsterdam. The small front hides a quite spacious hotel with nice reception and bar areas. Room was clean and spacious, breakfast was lovely (mixture of continental and cooked) and staff were all very pleasant. Would definately recommend and will not hesitate to stay there again myself.

We only stayed here one night before leaving on a cruise. Location was good for seeing Dam Square, Oud church, etc. Tram line right out in front, so if you wish to use tram to get around, tram stop a block away. Two elevators in building, seemed a bit slow, but ok overall. There is a bar and maybe a restaraunt on the ground floor, but we didn't use either. Room was very quiet and clean. Coffee making equip in room which is always great. The beds here are amazingly comfortable.

Overall, a good and nice hotel but nothing special to win us over, the only reason we chose it over some of the others was the free wifi, which worked very well.

We stayed here for 4 nights and it was a good enough stay. The rate we paid wasn't too bad for a hotel in a good location and comfort level, and it didn't include breakfast. Some of the pros and cons are:

Pros
- Good location, about 10 mins walk from Centraal station and very walkable to most other tourists sites, and tram stop literally just outside of hotel door
- Free wifi. When I did my research it appears that many hotels don't offer free wifi as standard and this is the only reason why we chose it over a few other similarly priced and located hotels. Wifi did work very well for us, no complaint.
- Room was of good size by European standard (compared to the ones I stayed at in UK, Barcelona and Paris).
- Shower had pressure and hot water.

Cons
- No safe in the room
- No coffee/ tea facility
- Shower basin quite stained (which others have mentioned as well). While it doesn't affect the function, aesthetically it's not in keeping with a 4-star hotel status.
- As mentioned by others, the bed had an interesting slope (never seen anything like it). It's like there a big hump in the middle of the bed. Bed itself was comfortable without being too hard or soft.

If we do return to Amsterdam, we will probably not stay here again not because there's anything wrong with it, but at the same time there is nothing exceptional either.
