“LUXURY HAVEN IN AMSTERDAM”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

A luxury haven of peace & quiet in Amsterdam. The Hotel Okura Amsterdam has large & well appointed rooms, a superb breakfast & several excellent dining & bar choices - very handy after a busy day. The hotel is out of the city centre but is only a 40 minute walk away & a tram passes outside that takes you to Central Amsterdam passing the Van Gogh Museum & Rijksmuseum - two of the "must see " things in Amsterdam. Excellent staff & a really helpful Concierge help to make The Okura a lovely place to stay in Amsterdam

Pros: Clean, beautiful, coolest bathrooms ever and a very helpful staff.

Con: a bit of a hike from the city center (about 35 - 40 min walk or a 10 min walk to a 15 min tram ride).

The pros definitely outweigh the cons on this one, since it's not that far and you're spared the city / pedestrian noise.

I went with a friend and we felt a little out of place, since it was definitely a hotel catering to business people with an expense account (holy room service fees, batman) but there's a good grocery store in the vicinity, so that helped.

I would definitely stay there again!

We were three ladies traveling together on the third day of vacation mom fell down 14 stairs and broke her ribs. At that point we needed a hotel without stairs. Okura welcomed us took amazing care of us, offered a wheelchair to our mom. Rose, the manager was amazing thank you so much for being our angel. Thank you from USA North Carolina

This is perhaps not an obvious choice for the non-Japanese traveller - there are plenty of good Amsterdam hotels more centrally located - but the Okura has become our favourite place to stay in the city. Elegant decor, first-rate friendly service, large rooms (this time ours, on the 7th floor, was facing the gracht behind the building and offering a clear view to the horizon) and very reasonable prices; and of course an array of superb restaurants (see separate review of Yamazato). The Japanese breakfast (need to order in advance) is an interesting experience with a variety of small dishes served on a tray; the international breakfast is a large buffet with omelet station, smoothies bar, lots of fruit, bakery products, cold cuts, you name it, all of excellent quality, even delicious comb honey. All highly recommended. And if you join their loyalty club - at no charge - you get free access to really fast wifi. (The free version may be less speedy.)

We spent the weekend at hotel okura and the hotel itself doesn't feel like a city hotel with a beautiful exterior and reception is also very nice. We stayed in an executive junior suite the room was generous in size with a separate dressing room. The decor was a bit old fashioned and the rooms and more importantly the bathrooms need modernising with a few gaps in grout and silicone. Toiletries were not up to a 5 star hotel in my opinion. Lots of gadgets and mod cons in the room but no iPod docks even though in the hotel information you can request one we did and was told they are not available so why say you have them. Also the tea and coffee is never refreshed and you have to keep calling house keeping for extra sugar or milk for example. The towels are also quite hard and old they need replacing. Rooms are very quiet though and the bed is comfortable ands they have a great pillow menu to match. All in all a good stay but needs some improving.
