“Excellent value for money spent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

First of all, the hotel is a little far from the city center. After you come out of Amsterdam Central Station, take tram 25 to its last stop, and walk past the bridge. You will see the 18-floor building with a big "Mercure" sign on top. It's highly recommended to buy a day pass for 7.7 Euros which is valid for 24 hours (over night). Otherwise, a single 1 hour ticket costs 3 euros.

The hotel is in an isolated and quiet area overlooking the canal. Across the bridge is a large area of residential district, where you can find grocery stores, supermarket, restaurants and pubs.

On the first night, we got our room on the 18th(top) floor. Great view and excellent soundproofing! The hotel in general looks very new, hence the room looks new and clean, as well as quite spacious. We slept so well.

And to my surprise, they are even equipped with a small gym, nothing fancy though. Weight rack ranges from 4 to 14 kgs dumbbells, plus 2 treadmills a compound cable machine. I got 2 good workout sessions out of it. So bring your sportswear! They also have a sauna but I did not have time to try it.

Their front desk staff are friendly enough and no complaints in general for their services.

Room Tip: Rooms on the higher floors have a better view over the canal.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

We were allocated this hotel for a weekend on one of those "secret hotel" deals so we had no idea where we would end up. The hotel itself was well presented, the room was very clean and everything felt new. The bed was huge and very comfortable, and the rainhead shower was great. The only downside there was the towels - only one small, thin towel per person and they felt quite old.

The air con in the room wasn't particularly powerful, but we had to use that rather than keep the window open as the road by the hotel is quite noisy.

The buffet breakfast was included in our booking, and although it was open until 12 at the weekends (very good), we didn't take full advantage of it so can't really report on the quality of the food or value for money. The staff were very friendly though.

The major drawback with this hotel is the distance from the centre. You have to walk across the bridge for 10-15 minutes and then get tram no. 25 for about 25 minutes, which stops right by Centraal station. The metro is about a 10 minute walk in the opposite direction from the hotel, but the station was uber confusing and due to railworks the metro doesn't go straight to Centraal so you have to change. It wasn't too much of a problem for us as we left the hotel in the morning and stayed out in the city all day until coming back at night. On our last day we thought we would have to come all the way back to the hotel to get our bags before catching a flight, but there are hundreds of large lockers at Centraal station, so definitely make the most of them if you have a day to spend in the city after you check out of the hotel.

All in all it was a pleasant experience.

Dear Sir / Madam,

First of all I would like to thank you for your feedback on Tripadvisor regarding your stay. Your feedback is very important to us as we try to improve our services every day.

I was pleased to read that the room was up to your expectations. However, I will look into your comment regarding the towels.

It is correct that we are located just in the outskirts of Amsterdam, but in retrospect the public transportation is fairly close by and in walking distance. Next to that we offer our guests the possibility to rent bicycles and even a Vespa scooter.

I hope to welcome you again in the Mercure Hotel Amsterdam City.

With the kindest regards,

Robert van Vliet

Stayed here before and find it ideal for my business needs. Near to my client and not snagged by City traffic. Great pub/restaurant with a bit of atmosphere. Excellent rooms and free high speed internet. Recommended if you are on Business and want to avoid the centre.

This hotel is excellent and not too far from either the city centre or the RAI Exhibition centre. The staff were friendly and helpful. The bar/grill has a limited but good menu and the food was good. The bed was comfortable and the room a reasonable size. More importantly the WiFi was excellent and FREE. More hotel group could learn from that.

Room Tip: Most rooms have a view of the canal but it is better to request it, just in case

The hotel was a nice business hotel, located in a business park w/o easy access to publc transportation. Also, restaurants were a twenty minute walk away. The hotel restaurant was good and reasonably priced but the breakfast was 22+ Euros, much too expensived.

I was with Mercure Amsterdam during a business trip at the same time as the UEFA final. The location is quite far from the city center - you can get there by tram (no.25 for 25 min) and then another 15 min by foot. The rooms are very small compared to other Mercure hotels I've been in, but they are clean and nice. The walls are very thin though, and I could hear my neighbor's alarm at 5 o'clock in the morning ... The breakfast was diverse and plenty, but since the hotel was full, it was a bit crowded and I had to wait to get something to eat. The lobby is nice and you can enjoy the evening having dinner or just a beer. Overall, I would say this hotel is not my first choice when I'll return to Amsterdam and I would recommend it only as an alternative.

Room Tip: rooms which are not facing the river - as there is a container yard and it makes a lot of noise all...

this hotel located just few min (15 ) from the center and comparing to other hotels that are closer to the center i think this one will give you the best value fo rthe $paid. The only bad thing is price paid for breakfast. My wife an di paid eur 50 for buffet breakfast which was not worth more than 20 eur in my opinion but we had no choice since there is no other place to eat around, however next day we just got on local train and went to eat @the center for half the price.

Room Tip: dont eat breakfast at hotel
