My wife and I are just back from a three day stay at this hotel. Having never visited Amsterdam before, we chose our accommodation by reading other reviews, so I hope that anyone considering this hotel will find my review helpful:
This hotel is brilliantly located. A 6 and a half minute walk (I counted!!) from the railway station - and that was with luggage. (DIRECTIONS: Exit the railway station. Walk across to the Victoria Hotel opposite. Walk along past the hotel (to the right) and take the second street on your left, going away from the station (Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal). Walk down this street past the Crowne Plaza hotel and the Golden Tulip is tucked away on Nieuwezijds Kolk - which is the street on your left just after tyhe Crowne Plaza (big office block on one corner and a coffee shop on the other).
The hotel desk staff were polite and efficient - nothing more, nothing less - although the housekeeping staff were very pleasant. The rooms are very clean and well maintained -everything worked as it should - and yes, as mentioned in some other reviews, they are not the most generously proportioned rooms in the world - but they adequately hold a (very comfy) king size bed, sideboard, tv, etc. and the bathroom, whilst not being huge is entirely suitable for whatever you might want to do in a bathroom.
We were staying on a room only basis, so didn't try the €20 breakfast - but they give you a voucher on arrival which gets you a €3.50 deduction - and the breakfast room looked nice.
For those people who said that this hotel was in need of renovation - I can't agree. It doesn't look as if it'sbeen neglected and it's certainly one of the cleanest and best decorated places I've stayed at - who knows, maybe it was redecorated just before we visited??
Foodwise - Humphry's (next door to the hotel) is excellent value and has just the right mix of familiarity and daring on the menu to make me think I'd tried something new - but I hadn't really - it just felt as though I had - and at €19.99 for 3 courses, it was good value.
We also ate at the Pizza Hut in the Marriot Hotel (off Leidseplein) - fine if you like Pizza Hut - and at the Aran Irish Pub in Max Euwe Plein - which was excellent value.
Drinkswise - De Wildeman Pub is a few doors up from the hotel and the friendly barstaff will patiently assist you in drinking your way through the extensive and at times arcane, beer menu. 20 different draft beers and 200 bottled beers from places that I hadn't even heard of.
Didn't get a chance to try it out, but it was jam packed when we tried to get in - The Highlander Bar is in the next street up from the Golden Tulip and appears to very popular with ex Pat Scots.
Transport - -Trams 1,2, and 5 go to the "happening" areas of teh city centre and can be accessed from the tram stop about 150 feet from the hotel entrance. Coming back up from the lower end of town, the 13 and 17 (or any other that says Central Station) will let you off at the same stop - within staggering distance of your bed.
Excellent stay in Amsterdam. Hotel excellent value for money (but they did try to charge us for a breakfast and a mini bar purchase which we hadn't had!!) and excellent places to eat and drink. Hope to visit again soon.
