“Right By Dam Square”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2007

If you are looking for a standard hotel that is very quiet and within 5 minutes from both the train station and Dam Square, this is a good choice. The rooms are clean and furnished simply. If you have young kids beware of the porn on the TV! Raunchier than anything I've seen before. Breakfast was very good with lots of choices. Front desk was very pleasant. Despite website claims to the contrary, no airline points given for discounted rooms.

Just spent 3 days in this hotel and had an excellent time. The hotel is very impressive. Staff are friendly and helpful. The room was a perfect size, the bed was huge. There is a mini bar in the room, although this is obviously expensive. Tea and coffee in room but buy your own milk and keep it in the fridge. The hotel bar also has free internet access. The awful carpet on the website has been replaced by a lovely modern wooden floor, also the dining room is clean and modern. We had breakfast two mornings and could not fault it.

The hotel is central (a five minute walk from the Central Station), and everything is within walking distance.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel. 10/10

We were quite pleased with the location of the Golden Tulip. It was within walking distance from Central Station- we carried lots of luggage down the short walk on the sidewalk with no problems.

Everything touristy is within walking distance. We ventured out into the "suburban", populated neighborhoods often.

There's two internet terminals in the lobby, quite useful. The room was a good size for us. We were unfortunate enough to have the safe break whilst we were there- we had to wait one day for maintenance to figure out how to open it. Management was quite apologetic and stored our valuable in the management safe for us.

We did not partake of the breakfast or bar. We had quite a pleasant stay, overall.

Very clean, centrally located hotel. 5minutes from central station. We booked a standard double room which felt very spacious, not huge but for the same price I've stayed in box rooms in London! The bathroom was spotless and the shower was great. The staff were very friendly, we had no reason to call reception, but always greated us when we passed. The TV had BBC channels to make us feel at home. My only negative is that that there was no milk with the coffee making facilities, but friends who had stayed in other hotels in Amsterdam had warned me that this was standard so we bought milk and kept it in the mini bar so not really an issue. Breakfast wasn't included in our rate so I can't comment on the food but the breakfast room looked very inviting.
I can’t understand any of the negative comments, its not a 5 star hotel but for the £83 a night we paid it was a great hotel and a lot nicer than most places I’ve stayed in Britain for similar prices. If I found a similar price I would definitely stay here again, a very clean, modern, friendly hotel.

I stayed at the Golden Tulip for 2 nights on a leisure break. We chose the hotel purely for its location. The location is great, the hotel is right in the city centre and it's very easy to walk around and about. It's only about 5 minutes walk to the Central train station and connection to the airport is easy, cheap and very frequent. I like taxis but I can definitely recommend taking the train!

The hotel is ok, the decor has seen better days but all was ok. Our room was very small but it had all the essentials. The duvet/blanket was a bit tatty along with the carpet choice (both in our room and in the foyer!) were the only minus points. You don't get a lot for your money but if you are not planning to stay in your room too much, the hotel is a good choice.

I am reading the other reviews and wondering if we all stayed at the same place.

For starters, let me say the place is perfectly located!! Perfectly-you are near everything you want to be near-including the train station! I couldn't believe our location.

The place is fine and the location makes it worth staying. But the rooms are small-very small-my husband and I had to turn sideways to pass each other in certain part of the room. It is definately clean-very clean. The breakfast is fine, but I thought expensive for what it was (although I found amsterdam rather costly in general)

As for the staff (and this is the part I where I wonder if I stayed in a different hotel then the other reviewers)-they were rather unfriendly and never helpful!

I love this site and check it any time I stay at a hotel so I wanted to return the favor. All in all the location can not be beat and it was a very decent hotel, no major complaints, nothing gross or anything like that-just small and unfriendly staff. I would probably not stay here again, but not because I hated it just because I feel like for what I paid, I would have liked to have not been treated like a bother!
