“Great location, friendly staff however small rooms and a little noisey...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2013

I stayed here with my husband for 3 nights in September... Amsterdam was our first stop in our Europe trip and we were in town to catch up with friends. Location wise, you can't fault this hotel, only a short walk from the Central station and very very easy to find. Trams at the doorstep and within walking distance to most things !! Very very convenient for going out, or sight seeing.... The hotel is small however the staff are friendly. The rooms are incredibly small - but clean... This is not a big issue as you only really use your room to sleep so who needs that much space anyway ! The only issue we had was the noise, we could hear the people in the next room and down the hall etc... talking, doors opening/shutting etc. It was good for what we needed - if you are looking for something a little more luxurious then maybe this hotel is not for you. We would stay again although may explore other options for a 'quieter' nights sleep. The staff were very nice though :-)

first it was the warm welcome and the answer to would they store our bags as we had arrived early. Of course they would happily store our bags or, as one of the rooms we had booked was cleaned would we prefer to book into that one now and freshen up leaving our bags there. the other room would be ready at 2pm.

the room was spacious and the twin beds comfortable and inviting. the bath and shower in one room was huge and the shower in the other was great hot and with a very good water pressure. there was a safe and it was free to use. there was temperature control and the air conditioning was so quiet you could sleep and not know it was on.

it is ion the main street leading from central station almost into Dam Square and with windows open it was great to hear the noise of people enjoying the city but with windows closed it was a haven of peace and quiet..

our stay was delightful and we would recommend this hotel unreservedly

Room Tip: we chose superior rooms at very little extra cost

Of course we do our utmost to assist our guests when checking in early or leaving late. There is always the possiblity to store the luggage and we do not let our guests wait until official checkin time if roomsare available. I was pleased to learn that we could meet your expectations and hope you will visit us again in the future.

This was our second return visit to this truly great hotel, right in the heart of exciting Amsterdam. When arriving, we were notified that we had been upgraded to a Junior Suite. The room was beautifully decorated with the most comfortable memory foam bed. We had a lovely view overlooking busy Damrak and Dam Square. Staff at reception and in the De Roode Leeuw dining room were most kind and friendly. It was great to see and talk to Peter and Jose in the dining room again. The breakfast buffet was of the highest quality and delicious, as were the dinners in the dining room(restaurant) Many staff that we talked to had been with the hotel for 20 years or more, a good indication that they take great pride in being part of this fine and historic(102 years old) establishment. In our 20 years of European travel, this hotel ranks at the very top of our hotel experiences. Highly recommended!
Marjorie and John McIlroy,Victoria BC Canada.

Room Tip: Ask for a Superior room overlooking Damrak and Dam Square.(Surprisingly quiet at night).

It is always nice to learn that guests returned to our property because they were so pleased the first time. Indeed our staff turnover is very low and although the fact that many of our "old "waiters reachted the retirement age, we have also many of our younger staff members who are already many years with us. That is the advantage of a smaller hotel with a family-like atmosphere.
I look forward to welcoming you again in the future

Myself and my husband have just returned from a 6 night stay at the Hotel Amsterdam and could not have been happier with our hotel experience. We arrived in Amsterdam at 10am local time, exhausted having had a long journey. The hotel not only had our room ready and waiting at no extra charge but they had been kind enough to give us a free upgrade to a junior suite as it was my birthday. Reception staff were friendly and helpful, over the course of our stay they recommended restaurants and excursions as well as giving us directions and lending us brollies. Our room was large and very clean and comfortable, the bed was lovely and comfy and the bath was deep enough to float in.......pure bliss!! Location wise, it was 10 min walk from the station and central for all attractions, infact we didn't need to use public transport at all, everything was within 30mins walk at the very most. Despite the central location I found our room to be quiet and a nice escape from the craziness of the city, it was also air conditioned. Had I paid the full price for the junior suite, my only niggle would have been that the daily housekeeping could have been better, some days we came back to a spotless room, on others I felt that the bathroom could have been more thoroughly cleaned and our mugs were not always cleaned. I found the towels provided to be a bit small but that's my only comments! Overall I would completely recommend this hotel to friends and will look to stay again when I return to Amsterdam in future.

How great that we could upgrade you to a Junior suite because of your birthday. I was pleased to learn that my Front-Office staff met your expectations and aplogize that the Housekeeping did not fulfil their duties for a full 100%. Your comments have been forwarded to our Executive Housekeeper as point of attention. I was pleased that you enjoyed your stay and hope to welcome you on antoher (birthday ?) occasion again

This hotel is in a great location, its one straight walk from Amsterdam Centraal station and directly at Dam square and Monument with plenty of shops surronding it. However my biggest complaint about this hotel is the fact that the room i was given was so tiny. The room and bathroom looks alot bigger in the pictures to how small the room is in real life. To give you an idea of how tiny it is you could reach your hand out of the shower and touch the wall. The bedroom itself is also tiny with not much room to move around. The desk is connected to the bed and when sleeping in the night i banged my head against the corner which was very painful. The view looked on to the fire escape again nothing like the views you are shown on expedia. The staff were friendly but it doesnt make up for the fact the room was so tiny. It was also very loud with the cleaners cupboard being outside our room and them banging and using it and tlaking loudly from 8am onwards.

I would recommend this hotel but dont stay on the 4th floor even though we was promised and booked a king bed through expedia it was nothing like what was given to us.It was also very expensive.

Room Tip: do not have a room on the 4th floor.

It is with regret that I learned that your stay with not entirely what you epxected it to be and apologize that you had a noisy room. Most of our rooms are very quiet because they are facing inside courts but in your case you seemed to be next to the office of Housekeeping. As you mentioned it there is not much of a view. For those who want more space we recommend our superior rooms which are only slightly more expensive. You found the room rate expensive and I suppose that you stayed with us in one of the busy congress periods in september. Our rates fluctuate following the demand (like it is the case with the airplanes) so if you are not stuck to a certain day it is always prudent to consult the rates during other days. Would you consider coming back please mention your specific requirements. If this is not possible on the booking site you can always forward your request by e-mail
Yours sincerely

We only had 3 days to make the most of out visit to Amsterdam. This hotel was in an ideal position being walking distance to many tourist attractions and bus/canal tours. Had a corner front room with ttremendous view of Main Street. Room was exceptionally roomy with a standard of a 5 star hotel. Will certainly go back to this hotel on future visits to Amsterdam.

Room Tip: Corner suits best for roominess and view

We appreciate all comments not only the positive but also the negative. In your case it is a positive one and from your comments I can understand that you had a superior room overlooking the Damrak and Dam square. Indeed you have a spectacular view on the Amsterdam city life. And of course our location is one of the best in town. This is a fact and has nothing to do with our effort to make our guests feel at home. We look forward to your next visit
